CoLumBus ror YARD SALE Success
‘The Knights of Columbus held their annual Yard
Sale on 13-14 August, audit was a success. Lots of
people tumed out to take advantage ofthe bargains
and there were lots of bargains tobe had, But an
event ofthis size couldat have been ‘pulled off
‘without the help of the Knights, ther spouses and the
‘St Pete's Ladies Guild. Their assistance made the
‘whole project possible, And then there was help
from an unexpected source; Shipyard Waste
Solutions, of Eliot, Mae, provided a 15 Yard
dumpster, fee of charge forthe removal of the
remainder. What a savings!

contol over when it
|A: Contos the key word, We spend slot of time
looking atthe things we n't contol or change. We
should Took at the things we can control and accept
the things we can't control. With commute, have
‘patients practice deep breahing end mindfulness,
technique, It makes the most ofthat time. With rent
snd finances we will come up witha budget. This
‘provides a plan and structure which can reduce
Stress, The overarching her with contol is self-care
‘Ask yourself, do you have healthy eating abit,
good sleeping habits, or ary exercise habits? In
general i's about how are people taking care of,
themselves.
Boundary seting is imporant. A lot of people have
trouble saying no or are wiling to go the extra mile
for someone else. We neec fo put ourselves first once
ina while, With secar, lot of us have trouble
siting boundaries. We work exra hours, take kids to
school evens and spors, we're more willing o feel
‘mare obligated to help otbers and put our needs
aside, We ned to feel ok saying no which wil put
‘more emphasis on ou seltcare
(Q: What can people do to elieve stress?
‘A: Lexplain it with three level. The Ist evel i self:
‘are. The 2nd level is what eal sel soothing. Tis
‘means appealing to your senses to help you relax. It
is different for everyone and some things include
listening to music, taking «bath, or lighting candles.
‘This takes it up a notch from selfeare by doing
something nie for you. The 3rd level is actively
‘combating stress inthe form of physical activity like
‘walking, yoga, Zumb, ora hobby that can distract
‘yu from the sires.
QIfsomeone knows a family member who is
stressed, what suggestions might you offer?
A; Listening. Sometimes ell we need is someone 19

listen. You don't have to have an answer or tolution,
Just beng therefor somebody works. Helping
Someone to relieve stress by motivating them to be
active is another way to help. You could be a buddy
to walk with, Some clients will teach their family
members skills learned from their own treatment ike
mindfulness, Irstress is high, suggesting counseling
is an option.
What shoulda person not do when stressed out?
[A: This goes back tothe boundary piece, Try nat
taking on more. Be able to set those boundaries.
‘Obviously for people suferng fom depression and
anxiety, sel medicating with substances isnot a
‘good ides and should be avoided, Alcobol is a
substance that wll enhance the depression, I's more
about being prosetve than not doing things. Distact
‘yourself fom the tess by engaging in something
positive fom one ofthe tree levels.
Is there any way we ean tum off the "tess
switch"?
A: Obviously, some sess is good and motivates us,
but distraction is a proven method. So, in a sense you
can tur it off. Mindfulness i anther proven
technique where you ae just purely in the moment.
1s similar fo meditation. That can take you away
from stress and gives you a break,
: What can the community of Farmington do to
support each other during times of stress?
{A Farmington lacks resources at the moment. One
00d thing with Frisbie Hospital is that it ha stated
{to put therapists in their offices. Now there is a
therapist resource patents can utilize, Having access
tw other resources like that in the community isa
‘wonderful thing. [see communities bring people
together for free live musi in the park and a
farmer's market. Other resources come inthe form
‘of recreation centers, churches, medical, counseling,
fee group activites, girls and boys programs, fe
interests groups lke gardening, dealing with grief,
and computers. Things like that where you can meet
people will support the community.
(End of interview)
| found this interview tobe enlightening on how we
can better manage stress. If we put effort into these
suggestions we can all feel beter about our
circumstances. Zippia.com won't beable to measure
The Pudiledock Press Farmington, NH
the change in stress levels until the next round of|
census’ data for Farmington, but maybe we'll be
ale to see for ourselves in the meanwhile, The next
time you can lend a hand sire a smile, oF do
Something for you, the good vibration will begin to
tipple across town. You'll see the change if you can
be the change. And who knows, maybe i'l
revitalize business and jobs in Farmington so locals
‘won't have long commutes, tere willbe more full
time jobs that provide health insurance, and the
‘housing market will become more affordable, The
sires is stating to melt away already.
