Abstract
Background:ThispaperoutlinesthefindingsfromaresearchprojectcarriedoutintheUK
thatexploredtherelationshipbetweenparentalengagementandStudentachievement.
Purpose.The12monthresearchprojectwascommissionedtoexploretherelationship
betweeninnovativeworkwithparentsandtheSubsequentimpactuponStudent
achievement.Amainaimoftheresearchprojectwastocapturetheviewsandvoicesof
parents.Studentsandteachersandtoexplorethebarrierstoparentalengagementandthe
respectivebenefitstolearning.
Programmedescription:TheStudywasqualitativeindesignandcollectedindepthcase
studydatafrom20schoolsand314respondents.Inadditionarangeofdocumentary
evidencePlusperformancedatawerecollectedateachcasestudysite.
Sample:AsampleofschoolsinEnglandwasselectedontwomaincriteria:firstly,thetype
ofdevelopment,andsecondly,theparticularfocusofparentalengagement.Schoolsinthe
samplewereselectedtoensurethattherewasabroadgeographicalspreadandamixof
urbanandruralschools.Otherfactorswerealsotakenintoaccounttoensureadiverse
rangeofschools(e.g.numberonroll,socioeconomicstatus(SES)andblackminority
ethnic(BME)percentages).
Designandmethod:Casestudymethodologywasusedastheprimemethodofdata
collectionintheStudy.Inaddition,schooldatasetsrelatingtostudentperformance,
behaviourandattendancewereanalysed.Thesedatasetsallowedpatternsandtrendstobe
identified.Thisanalysisformedthebasisofthemoredetailedinterrogationofthecase
studyevidenceateachofthe20sites.

Results:Theresearchfindingshighlightanumberofbarriersfacingcertainparentsin
supportingtheirchildren'slearning.Itisclearthatpowerfulsocialandeconomicfactorsstill
preventmanyparentsfromfullyparticipatinginschooling.Theresearchshowedthat
schoolsratherthanparentsareoften'hardtoreach'.Theresearchalsofoundthatwhile
parents,teachersandpupilstendtoagreethatparentalengagementisa'goodthing'.they
alsoholdverydifferentviewsaboutthepurposeofengagingparents.Itisalsoclearthat
thereisamajordifferencebetweeninvolvingparentsinschoolingandengagingparentsin
learning.Whileinvolvingparentsinschoolactivitieshasallimportantsocialandcommunity
function,itisonlytheengagementofparentsinlearningillthehomethatismostlikelyto
resultinapositivedifferencetolearningoutcomes.
Conclusions:Parentalengagementinchildren'slearninginthehomemakesthegreatest
differencetostudentachievement.Mostschoolsareinvolvingparentsinschoolbased
activitiesinavarietyofwaysbuttheevidenceshowsbutthishaslittle,ifany,impacton
subsequentlearningandachievementofyoungpeople.
