Most forms of property are concrete and tangible, such as houses, cars, furniture or anything else that is
included in one's possessions. Other forms of property can be intangible, and copyright deals with
intangible forms of property. Copyright is a legal protection extended to authors of creative works, for
example, books, magazine articles, maps, films, plays, television shows, software, paintings, photographs,
music, choreography in dance and all other forms of intellectual or artistic property.
Although the purpose of artistic property is usually public use and enjoyment, copyright establishes the
ownership of the creator. When a person buys a copyrighted magazine, it belongs to this individual as a
tangible object. However, the authors of the magazine articles own the research and the writing that went
into creating the articles. The right to make and sell or give away copies of books or articles belongs to the
authors, publishers, or other individuals or organizations that hold the copyright. To copy an entire book or
a part of it, permission must be received from the copyright owner, who will most likely expect to be paid.
Copyright law distinguishes between different types of intellectual property. Music may be played by
anyone after it is published. However, if it is performed for profit, the performers need to pay a fee, called
a royalty. A similar principle applies to performances of songs and plays. On the other hand, names, ideas,
and book titles are excepted. Ideas do not become copyrighted property until they are published in a book,
a painting or a musical work. Almost all artistic work created before the 20 th century is not copyrighted
because it was created before the copyright law was passed.
The two common ways of infringing upon the copyright are plagiarism and piracy. Plagiarizing the work
of another person means passing it off as one's own. The word plagiarism is derived from the Latin
plagiarus, which means "abductor". Piracy may be an act of one person, but, in many cases, it is a joint
effort of several people who reproduce copyrighted material and sell it for profit without paying royalties
to the creator. Technological innovations have made piracy easy and anyone can duplicate a motion picture
on videotape, a computer program, or a book. Video cassette recorders can be used by practically anyone
to copy movies and television programs, and copying software has become almost as easy as copying a
book. Large companies zealously monitor their copyrights for slogans, advertisements, and brand names,
protected by a trademark.

Stories about how people somehow know when they are being watched have been going around for

the completion of the largest ever study of the so-called staring effect, there is impressive evidence that this
is a recognizable and (46)_______ sixth sense. The study involved hundreds of children. For the
experiments, they sat with their eyes covered and with their backs to other children, who were told to either

to (47)_______ when they were being stared at. In a total of 18,000 trials (48)_______ worldwide, the
children (49)_______ sensed when they were being watched almost 70% of the time. The experiment was

The goal of Internet-based encyclopedia Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org) is to give everyone on the
planet access to information. Like other encyclopedias, Wikipedia contains lots of information: more than
2.5 million articles in 200 different languages covering just about every subject. Unlike other
encyclopedias, however, Wikipedia is not written by experts, but by ordinary people. These writers are not

paid and their names are not published. They contribute to Wikipedia simply because they want to share
their knowledge.
Encyclopedias began in ancient times as collections of writings about all aspects of human knowledge.
The word itself comes from ancient Greek, and means "a complete general education". Real popularity for
encyclopedias came in the nineteenth century in Europe and the United States, with the publication of
encyclopedias written for ordinary readers. With the invention of the CD-ROM, the same amount of
information could be put on a few computer discs. Then with the Internet, it became possible to create an
online encyclopedia that could be constantly updated, like Microsoft's Encarta. However, even Internetbased encyclopedias like Encarta were written by paid experts. At first, Wikipedia, the brainchild of
Jimmy Wales, a businessman in Chicago, was not so different from these. In 2001, he had the idea for an
Internet-based encyclopedia that would provide information quickly and easily to everyone. Furthermore,
that information would be available free, unlike other Internet encyclopedias at that time.
But Wales, like everyone else, believed that people with special knowledge were needed to write the
articles, and so he began by hiring experts. He soon changed his approach, however, as it took them a long
time to finish their work. He decided to open up the encyclopedia in a radical new way, so that everyone
would have access not only to the information, but also to the process of putting this information online. To
do this, he used what is known as "Wiki" software (from the Hawaiian word for "fast"), which allows users
to create or alter content on web page. The system is very simple: When you open the web site, you can
simply search for information or you can log on to become a writer or editor of articles. If you find an
article that interests you - about your hometown, for example - you can correct it or expand it. This process
goes on until no one is interested in making any more changes.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
In this era of increased global warming and diminishing fossil fuel supplies, we must begin to put a
great priority on harnessing alternative energy sources. Fortunately, there are a number of readily
available, renewable resources that are both cost-effective and earth-friendly. Two such resources are solar
power and geothermal power.
Solar energy, which reaches the earth through sunlight, is so abundant that it could meet the needs of
worldwide energy consumption 6,000 times over. And solar energy is easily harnessed through the use of
photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight to electricity. In the US alone, more than 100,000 homes are
equipped with solar electric systems in the form of solar panels or solar roof tiles. And in other parts of the
world, including many developing countries, the use of solar system is growing steadily.
Another alternative energy source, which is abundant in specific geographical areas, is geothermal
power, which creates energy by tapping heat from below the surface of the earth. Hot water and steam that
are trapped in underground pools are pumped to the surface and used to run a generator, which produces
electricity. Geothermal energy is 50,000 times more abundant than the entire known supply of fossil fuel
resources and as with solar power, the technology needed to utilize geothermal energy is fairly simple. A
prime example of effective geothermal use in Iceland, a region of high geothermal activity where there are
over 30 percent of private homes, are heated by geothermal power.
Solar and geothermal energy are just two of promising renewable alternatives to conventional energy
sources. The time is long overdue to invest in the development and use of alternative energy on global
scale.
Question 45. What is the main topic of this passage?
A. The benefits of solar power and wind power over conventional energy sources.
B. Two types of alternative energy sources that should be further utilized.
C. How energy resources are tapped from nature.
D. Examples of the use of energy sources worldwide.
Question 46. According to the passage, why should we consider using alternative energy sources?
A. Because fossil fuels are no longer available.
B. Because global warming has increased the amount of sunlight that reaches the earth.
C. Because they are free and available worldwide.
D. Because conventional energy resources are being depleted, and they cause environmental damage.
Question 47. Which of the following words could best replace the word harnessing?

C. They are more expensive than solar panels.
D. They contain photovoltaic cells.
Question 49. According to the passage, how is solar energy production similar to geothermal energy
production?
A. They both require the use of a generator.
B. They both use heat from the earths surface.
C. They both require fairly simple technology.
D. They are both conventional and costly.
Question 50. Where is the best place in the passage to insert the following sentence?
Although the US is not utilizing geothermal resources to this extent, the Western US has a similar
capacity to generate geothermal power.
A. after the phrase earth-friendly
B. after the phrase growing steadily
C. after the phrase geothermal power
D. after the phrase global scale

B. It is being used in 100,000 private homes worldwide.
C. It is 6,000 times more powerful than energy from fossil fuels.
D. There is enough of it to far exceed the energy needs of the world.
Question 52. What can be inferred about the use of geothermal energy in Iceland?
A. It is widely used form of energy for heating homes.
B. Twenty percent of the geothermal energy created is used to heat businesses.
C. It is not effective for use in private homes.
D. It is 80 times more effective than traditional forms of energy.
Question 53. What does the author imply about alternative energy sources?
A. Many different types of alternative energy sources exist.
B. Most alternative energy sources are too impractical for private use.
C. Alternative energy is too expensive for developing countries to produce.
D. Solar and geothermal energy are the effective forms of alternative power.
Question 54. What best describes the authors purpose in writing the passage?
A. To warn people about the hazards of fossil fuel use.
B. To convince people of the benefits of developing alternative energy sources.
C. To describe the advantages and disadvantages of alternative energy use.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Increasing numbers of parents in the U.S. are choosing to teach their children at home. In fact, the U.S.
Department of Education has estimated that in 1999, about 850,000 children were being homeschooled.
Some educational experts say that the real number is double this estimate, and the ranks of homeschooled
children seem to be growing at the average rate of about eleven percent every year.

At one time, there was a theory accounting for homeschooling: it was traditionally used for students
who could not attend school because of behavioral or learning difficulties. Today, however, more parents
are taking on the responsibility of educating their own children at home due to their dissatisfaction with
the educational system. Many parents are unhappy about class size, as well as problems inside the
classroom. Teacher shortages and lack of funding mean that, in many schools, one teacher is responsible
for thirty or forty students. The children are, therefore, deprived of the attention they need. Escalating
classroom violence has also motivated some parents to remove their children from school.
Although there have been a lot of arguments for and against it, homeschooling in the U.S. has become a
multi-million dollar industry, and it is growing bigger and bigger. There are now plenty of websites,
support groups, and conventions that help parents protect their rights and enable them to learn more about
educating their children. Though once it was the only choice for troubled children, homeschooling today is
an accepted alternative to an educational system that many believe is failing.

The White House, the official home of the United States President, was not built in time for George
Washington to live in it. It was begun in 1792 and was ready for its first inhabitants, President and Mrs. John
Adams, who moved in on November 1, 1800. When the Adamses moved in, the White House was not yet complete,
and the Adamses suffered many inconveniences; for example, the main staircase was incomplete, which hindered
movement from floor to floor, and the future laundry yard was merely a pool of mud, so wet laundry was hung in the
unfinished East Room to dry. Thomas Jefferson, the third president, improved the comfort of the White House in
many aspects and added new architectural features such as the terraces on the east and west ends.
When the British forces burned the White House on August 24, 1814, President Madison was forced to
leave. All the remained after the fire was the exterior walls, the interior was completely destroyed. It was not until
December of 1817 that the following president, James Monroe, was able to move into a rebuilt residence. Since then,
the White House has continued to be modified but has been continuously occupied by each succeeding US president.

to each of the questions from 55 to 64.
A pilot cannot fly a plane by sight alone. In many conditions, such as flying at night and landing in dense
fog, a pilot must use radar, an alternative way of navigating. Since human eyes are not very good at determining
speeds of approaching objects, radar can show a pilot how fast nearby planes are moving.
The basic principle of radar is exemplified by what happens when one shouts in a cave. The echo of the
sounds against the walls helps a person determine the size of the cave. With radar, however, the waves are radio
waves instead of sound waves. Radio waves travel at the speed of light, about 300,000 kilometers in one second. A
radar set sends out a short burst of radiation waves. Then it receives the echoes produced when the waves bounce
off objects. By determining the time it takes for the echoes to return to the radar set, a trained technician can
determine the distance between the radar set and other objects. The word radar, in fact, gets its name from the term
radio detection and ranging. Ranging is the term for detection of the distance between an object and the radar
set. Besides being of critical importance to pilots, radar is essential for air travel control, tracking ships at sea, and
for tracking weather systems and storms.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B , C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to the questions 45-54.
Choosing a career may be one of the hardest jobs you ever have, and it must be done with care. View a
career as an opportunity to do something you love, not simply as a way to earn a living. Investing the time
and effort to thoroughly explore your options can mean the difference between finding a stimulating and
rewarding career and move from job to unsatisfying job in an attempt to find the right one. Work
influences virtually every aspect of your life, from your choice of friends to where you live. Here are just a
few of the factors to consider.
Deciding what matters most to you is essential to making the right decision. You may want to begin by
assessing your likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses. Think about the classes, hobbies, and
surroundings that you find most appealing. Ask yourself questions, such as Would you like to travel? Do
you want to work with children? Are you more suited to solitary or cooperative work? There are no right

or wrong answers; only you know what is important to you. Determine which job features you require,
which ones you would prefer, and which ones you cannot accept. Then rank them in order of importance
to you.
The setting of the job is one factor to take into account. You may not want to sit at a desk all day. If not,
there is diversity of occupation- building inspector, supervisor, and real estate agent- that involve a great
deal of time away from the office. Geographical location may be a concern, and employment in some
fields is concentrated in certain regions. Advertising job can generally be found only in large cities. On the
other hand, many jobs such as hostels, law education, and retail sales are found in all regions of the
country. If a high salary is important to you, do not judge a career by its starting wages. Many jobs, such as
insurance sales, offers relatively low starting salaries; however, pay substantially increases along with your
experience, additional training, promotions and commission.
Dont rule out any occupation without learning more about it. Some jobs evoke positive or negative
associations. The traveling life of a flight attendant appears glamorous, while that of a plumber does not.
Remember that many jobs are not what they appear to be at first, and may have merits or demerits that are
less obvious. Flight attendants must work long, grueling hours without sleeps, whereas plumbers can be as
highly paid as some doctors.
Another point to consider is that as you mature, you will likely develop new interests and skills that
may point the way to new opportunities. The choices you make today need not be your final one.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the following questions from 45 to 54.
Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamins, minerals, and high-quality protein, eggs also contain a
high level of blood cholesterol, one of the major causes of heart diseases. One egg yolk, in fact, contains a little more
than two-thirds of the suggested daily cholesterol limit. This knowledge has driven egg sales to plummet in recent
years, which in turn has brought about the development of several alternatives to eating regular eggs. One alternative
is to eat substitute eggs. These egg substitutes are not really eggs, but they look somewhat like eggs when they are
cooked. They have the advantage of having low cholesterol rates, and they can be scrambled or used in baking. One
disadvantage, however, is that they are not good for frying, poaching, or boiling. A second alternative to regular eggs
is a new type of egg, sometimes called designer eggs. These eggs are produced by hens that are fed low-flat diets
consisting of ingredients such as canola oil, flax, and rice bran. In spite of their diet, however, these hens produce
eggs that contain the same amount of cholesterol as regular eggs. Yet, the producers of the these eggs claim that
eating their eggs will not raise the blood cholesterol in humans.
Egg producers claim that their product has been portrayed unfairly. They cite scientific studies to back up their
claim. And, in fact, studies on the relationship between eggs and human cholesterol levels have brought mixed
result. It may be that it is not the type of eggs that is the main determinant of cholesterol but the person who is
eating the eggs. Some people may be more sensitive to cholesterol derived from food than other people. In fact, there
is evidence that certain dietary fats stimulate the bodys production of blood cholesterol. Consequently, while it still
makes sense to limit ones intake of eggs, even designer eggs, it seems that doing this without regulating dietary fat
will probably not help reduce the blood cholesterol level.
Question 45: What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To make people know about the relationship between eggs and cholesterol
B. To convince people to eat designer eggs and egg substitutes.
C. To persuade people that eggs are unhealthy and should not be eaten

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the following questions from 55 to 64.
Ralph Earl was born into a Connecticut farm family in 1751. He chose early to become a painter and looked
for what training was available in his home state and in Boston. Earl was one of the first American artists to paint
landscapes. Among his first paintings were scenes from Revolutionary War battles of Lexington and Concord. In
1778 Earl went to London to study with Benjamin West for four years.
When Earl returned to United states, he was jailed for fourteen months for outstanding debts. While still a
prisoner, he painted portraits of some New York Citys most elegant society women and their husbands. After his
release, he took up the trade of itinerant portrait painter, working his way through southern New England and New
York. Earl didnt flatter his subjects, but his portraits show a deep understanding of them, perhaps because he had
sprung from the same roots.
Among Earls most famous paintings is his portrait of Justice Oliver Ellsworth and his wife, Abigail. To
provide counterpoint to the severity of the couple, he accurately details the relative luxury of the Ellsworths interior
furnishings. The view through the window behind them shows sunlit fields, well- kept fences, and a bend of the
Connecticut River. One of Earls paintings is something of an anomaly. Reclining Hunter, which for many years
was attributed to Thomas Gainsborough, shows a well- dressed gentleman resting beneath a tree. In the foreground,
he displays a pile of birds, the result of a days hunt. The viewer can also see a farmers donkey lying in the
background, another of the hunters victims. This outrageously funny portrait couldnt have been commissioned no
one would have wanted to be portrayed in such an absurd way. However, this painting uncharacteristically shows
Earls wit as well as his uncommon technical skills.
Question 55: What is the authors main purpose?
A.to discuss the life and work of an American painter.
B.to compare the art of Ralph Earl and Thomas Gainsborough.
C.to trace Ralph Earls artistic influences.
D.to describe the art scene in New York in the late eighteenth century.
