Executive Development Programmes
As director
of Executive
Development
Programmes, I am
pleased to invite
you to explore the
many postgraduate options at
the University of Canterbury (UC)
has to offer. UC graduates play
an important role in developing
and supporting innovative
organisations that strive to be
highly success.
The global economy has been through a difficult
period over the last five years with signs of full
recovery still in the distance. New Zealand is
a part of the global market and therefore our
countrys future success is reliant on businesses

developing innovative and highly efficient goods

and services that will deliver strong sustainable
growth for the future.
To achieve this goal, organisations cannot simply
continue to do what they have always done with
the expectation that it will provide different
results. There is a need for organisations and
their management to be highly creative and
innovative and think strategically about what
they are offering to society and how they can
maximise the opportunities that afford them
without creating negative externalities. This
takes leadership, discipline and a strong sense of
ethical responsibility.
This is in keeping with our mission to develop
leaders who create vibrant, internationally
competitive organisations and contribute to the
wellbeing of their communities.
With a projected $60 billion being injected
into the Canterbury region over the next ten
years, organisational growth and development
is inevitable. However, what is lacking is the

number of skilled managers needed to lead

organisations through this unique opportunity
presently in front of us. With this in mind it is
my pleasure to offer the following postgraduate
programmes and courses for those of you who
are looking to advance your skills, knowledge
and competencies in areas of organisational
management.
The UC Executive Development Programmes
include:
Master of Business Administration (MBA)
Graduate Diploma in Business Administration
(GradDipBA)
Postgraduate Certificate in Strategic Leadership
(PGCertStratLdrship)
Executive Education (Single Course Offerings)
Master of Business Management (MBM)
Master of Professional Accounting (MPA)

Executive Development Programmes

Taught Business Masters

Welcome to the Executive Development
Programmes and our suite of business
qualifications. At the EDP department we strive
to provide more than an academic qualification
for our students, we also cover personal
development and a professional experience.
Our programmes are boutique by nature, we
have limited student numbers in all cohorts.
This ensures the quality of programmes with
high levels of student to lecturer contact, quality
pastoral care, and more emphasis on each
individuals development.
The EDP department hosts regular events and
workshops to support our students learning
throughout their courses. Many of these are
focused on professionalism and assisting our
students to make contacts in the business world.
We put significant resources into job market and
career preparation; from interview and CV skills,
to functions with managers and employers from
local businesses.

The difference at UCs EDP department is our

specialised, interest in providing a real-world
business experience for our students. As a
University academia and pedagogy is our
backbone but, following this, market relevance
and practical applicability are our motivations.
We strive to produce sharp business minded
professionals who are prepared to make a
difference.

EDP Department Facilities

The Executive Development Programmes are
located in our new premises on the top floor
of the Business and Law building on UCs
Ilam Campus.
Fully refurbished and opened in January 2014,
the building provides an impressive modern
platform for our programmes and events to
operate. Dedicated to EDP classes is our lecture
theatre where all classes are held, adjacent to
which students have their own common room
with kitchen facilities, as well as a fully equipped
computer lab for silent study.
While enrolled in an EDP qualification, students
have exclusive access to utilise these facilities
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Market Engagement
Projects and Internships
Executive Development Programmes have
integrated research projects and internships. All
capstone projects and internships are carried out
with external organisations, providing students
with the valuable opportunity to connect indepth with the real-time business world.
The focus of these industry based assessments
is to apply academic research in a way that
is relevant to business, emphasising the
importance of students obtaining a greater
affinity for the economic and social realities of
business.
Examples of organisations who have hosted our
students in these endeavours include:
Airways Corporation
Christchurch City Council
Synlait
Fonterra
Z Energy
Christchurch International Airport
CERA
New Zealand Police

Market Engagement
The Executive Development Programmes host
regular events integrated with the business
community provide the platform for real time

700 plus alumni the programme has developed
over the past 30 years. These additional
development opportunities include Executive
Forums, Seminars and Workshops.

Executive Forums

Workshops

The Executive Forum series provides EDP

students and alumni with an opportunity to
listen to a CEO of a business discuss key aspects
of both the organisations they represent and
their own journey in commerce, often identifying
a key component of that journey that fits with
the overall themes of the EDP Department.
Recent Examples include:
Christopher Luxton CEO of Air New Zealand
Cilia Hegarty CEO of New Zealand Tax Refunds
Doug Hastie CEO of Syft Technology and
Managing Director of Chanui Tea
Rob Jamieson CEO Orion
Anthony Leighs Managing Director of
Leighs Construction
Antony Gough Director, The Terrace
Dr Raj Sissodia Co-Founder, Conscious
Capitalism Movement
Linda Cruse Director, Be the Change

Seminars
The EDP Department hosts a number of
seminars covering a range of topics presented by
specialists in their chosen field.
Seminars and Forums are exclusively by
invitation open to all EDP students, alumni and
industry partners.

These are learning opportunities for students

additional to the prescribed coursework.
There are a range of workshops available to
students aimed at developing key professional
competencies. These will complement their
qualification and theoretical learning, further
emphasizing UCs work ready learning as a
priority. Examples include:
Professional Skills
Presentation Skills
Intermediate Excel for Managers
Team and group Dynamics
Professional Writing
Maths Refresher
Accounting Refreshers
Academic Writing Refresher

MBA Alumni

UCs MBA has an active alumni network reaching 700 strong as the programme entered its 30th Anniversary
in 2014

Choosing to do an MBA at UC is
one of the best investment
decisions I have ever made.
As an individual who is looking to become
a distinguished business leader capable of
making sound business decisions, an MBA was
an obvious choice. I chose to do it at University
of Canterbury because UC offers a unique
horizontal learning environment under the
guidance of veteran consultants.
Learning and working on practical and real
business problems with a group of highly
experienced business leaders from various
industries was both challenging, intensive
& although hard to imagine, fun. I value the
knowledge I have gained in the environment
because I came out with a deeper insight of
whom I am and where I want to go.
As a recent graduate of UC MBA, I have found
myself more business savvy with lots of career
options. This has given me the confidence
and opportunity to go out there and do what
I am passionate about, which is helping solve
business issues. With my newfound knowledge,
together with two other UC MBA graduates, we
have created Creative Intelligence Consulting.
Using the frameworks and insights we have
gained from the UC MBA course, we help
businesses resolve their growth challenges.

Muhammad Abubakar
Master of Business Administration
Commercialisation Consultant
Creative Intelligence Consulting

The best part of UCs MBA

program is its focus towards
thought leadership. The
programme incorporates
practical relevance, growing
industry trends and technological
innovations.

Prior to completing the MBA, I

had attended various senior
management courses however
without a formal qualification
that was internationally
recognized, I was not able to take
the next step in my career.

I had been working for nearly 8 years in digital

marketing and had the opportunity to work at
a global organisation Google and then a startup which became a billion dollar company. I
thought it to be the opportune time to increase
my learning curve and further fill my learning
gaps in areas such as strategy, finance and
change management.

The MBA has given me a truly global perspective,

which is crucial for any senior manager in todays
complex business environment. The subjects
covered in the programme are extremely relevant
to todays business issues. From global strategy,
international marketing and sustainability to
change management and leading people, the
topics have given me a framework to position
our organisation to succeed in an ever-changing
marketplace.

I wanted the opportunity to expose myself

to a very diverse group of people and to live
in a country in which I would have strong
connections in both professional services and
industrial sectors. UC offered all of the above
so pursuing my degree here felt like the natural
choice for me and my objectives.
Most courses allow students to work on casestudies that present the greatest challenges
confronting leading companies and places
the student in the role of the decision maker
to analyse the business situation and look
for potential solutions. This helps us become
adept at analysing issues and making difficult
decisionshallmarks of skilful leadership.

I would absolutely recommend the MBA to any

manager who wants to further their career. The
programme is extremely rewarding from both a
personal and professional perspective.

Master of Business Management (MBM)

As a result of the Canterbury
regions rapid economic expansion
and development, UC is excelling in
the strategic business management
field for teaching and research,
and is placed to provide expertise
in business recovery after a major
disaster.
Industry feedback has strongly indicated the
need for innovative and dynamic business
leaders with broad, yet advanced management
skills for employment within a variety of
companies and projects. This demand is
also reflected globally as the rapid pace of
technological advances means organisations face
ever increasing competitive pressures, forcing
them to lift their game in order to survive, no
matter what the industry.
Business acumen is about possessing a quick,
intuitive understanding of commercial processes
and structures. UCs MBM will not only develop
your business perspective and judgement, it
will advance your skills to a highly competitive
level. The advantages you will gain are not simply
about understanding organisations, but focus
on personally engaging with business processes
and applying solutions with an emphasis on
innovation and strategic leadership.

The MBM provided me with a

unique skill set and the practical
knowledge I was looking for to
move into the commercial world.
It really complements my Arts
degree, and has definitely proven
itself with more career
opportunities as a graduate

The MBM is best suited to those who

have not studied commerce before. It is a
conversion degree, designed to build from
your previous background and develop
your business competencies.

Commerce is the backbone of

society. Whether you want to
work in the field of engineering,
science, education or even health
you will at some point be required
to interact with the commercial
aspects of the organization.
Understanding commerce and
management is therefore one of
the most transferable skills,
allowing you to progress from
being a specialist in a particular
field to the general manager of an
organization, irrespective of your
prior area of study.

MBM Student Profiles

MBM students come from a wide range of backgrounds professionally, academically and culturally

I cannot express strongly enough how

beneficial the MBM programme has
been. I have gained a business
advantage through all I have learnt so
far, and it compliments my
undergraduate degree in Psychology.
The MBM has proven itself with Chenices
graduate role at ANZ. I now have the opportunity
to meet and work with so many different people
during my time at ANZ. It is great to be exposed
to different areas of the bank before deciding
what best suits you. The practical skills and
knowledge Chenice developed through an
MBM internship in the finance division at Tait
ensured a smooth transition into the cooperate
environment.
The MBM programme combined a perfect
balance of real life experience and industry
related skills and knowledge. It allowed me to
gain a business advantage with my background
in psychology; making for a unique point
of difference in the workforce. I enjoyed the
structure of the MBM programme, and how
lectures involved input and discussion from
students; the knowledge and content was
communicated through current events and made
relevant to today.

The MBM can open doors to careers

that you wouldnt have considered in
the past. Showing that you have the
commitment to gain a Masters degree
and being able to offer employers both
humanities and commerce skills is
incredibly valuable.

The MBM set me up with the skills

and knowledge in business and a
skill set that could open up more doors
in the corporate world. With
background in BSci, the MBM is a
point of difference.

The nature of the job market means that

there is a lot of competition for jobs with other
Bachelors graduates; however I knew I had a
passion in Political Science & History from the
start of my undergraduate degree. I decided that
it was necessary to differentiate myself by adding
commerce skills to my humanities background.

I enjoy how practical the MBM course has

been. You cover an extensive range of subjects
throughout the year. There is strong emphasis
on providing practical skills and knowledge used
day to day in the corporate environment. The
internship has been a great platform to gain
business experience and draw on the knowledge I
have acquired through the course work.

The MBM allowed me to gain a Masters degree in

one year rather than two and gain those practical
commerce skills and knowledge I needed; whilst
still complementing my undergraduate studies.
I now have the core analytical skills from my
undergraduate and business skills that are vital
in the real world.

Theo chose UC as he enjoys the Christchurch

lifestyle; the mountains and the ocean nearby
means there is always something to do in
between studies. The Executive Development
Programmes give you plenty of independence as
a student which has worked really well for me.

investments, with a specific resource allocation
aspect to the role. Sector Group works with and

available and the day to day varied work
increases and improves any future and overseas
career moves I want to take.

This shift has seen a significant growth in
demand for qualified accounting professionals
globally across all industries. In New Zealand,
over 70% of all listed companies now have a
qualified Chartered Accountant on their Board.
With recent national and global litigation
indicating a greater need for higher levels
of accounting and financial skills at the
senior management level, the demand for
accounting professionals is predicted to increase
exponentially.
The School of Business and Economics (rated
second in New Zealand for Accounting in the 2013
Performance Based Research Funding results) has
responded by offering the MPA. As a conversion
masters programme, the MPA requires no prior
knowledge of accounting, as it takes you through
high-level and engaging teaching methods of
current accounting principles and processes.
As a MPA graduate, you will have the skills,
competencies, and qualifications required to
gain provisional membership to Professional
Accounting bodies such as the New Zealand

MPA Student Profiles

MPA students are diverse. Some strive for a career in Chartered Accountancy, and some aim to use the
MPAs high levels of financial literacy to excel in other business sectors

The EDP lecturers at Canterbury

are very helpful and approachable,
and I enjoyed mixing with people
from all different background who
share the same interests and goals.

I wanted to become a Chartered

Accountant, and I saw the MPA as
the best way to get there. The
quality of the instruction was even
better than I anticipated

The MPA really sets its graduates apart

from others. Unlike some accounting
courses, there is strong focus team work
ability, presentation skills and organisa
tion. All are a significant part of the course
and valued highly by employers.

After recently completing his MPA and

programme internship at renowned firm Deloitte,
Freddy secured a role as an Audit Analyst for 2016.
With n BCom (Honours) in International Business,
Freddy saw the opportunity to further expand his
commerce skills and knowledge and enrolled in
the MPA programme.

Laura has recently started the graduate

employment programme at Crowe Horwath,
a Chartered Accountancy firm. I have been
impressed with the amount of training and new
learning that we are exposed to every day. We
have attended systems and accountancy training
sessions from (almost) every person in the office.
We have completed general compliance tasks,
starting with GST returns and moving on to
Income Tax Returns.

After graduating with a BSci and BCom, Richard

was further motivated to complete an MPA due
to the many career opportunities accounting has
to offer. The course really challenged my time
management and critical thinking skills which I
will be able to utilize throughout my career.

He credits this as giving him a breadth of

opportunities for a career in auditing and hopes
to become a CA or a partner in a firm in the
future. I do have a commerce background, but it
wasnt until later on in my studies that I explored
starting a possible career in auditing; it really
appealed, especially as there is the potential to
go down many different avenues.
What I enjoyed the most about the MPA
programme was the amount of knowledge
you gain in just over a year. The challenge and
deadlines make you work hard, but it is definitely
worth it; especially if you are looking to diversify
and deepen your knowledge and understanding
of accounting, right through from the basics to
advanced accounting.

The MPA programme was intense but the fast

pace made it all the more rewarding. In addition
to my career, the best thing about the MPA
was the amazing friendships I made. The MPA
not only gave me the technical background I
needed, but helped me to develop broader skills
such as critical reasoning, writing reports and
giving presentations which meant that I felt very
prepared going into work.

My internship for UC Financial Services in internal

invaluable real work experience, allowing me to
combine practical skills with academic theory
while interacting with and gaining insights from
senior management.
The 12 months of studying followed up with
a practical internship or project provide an
extensive toolkit to make the transition
into your professional workplace easier. The
support and encouragement that EDP provides
you with is very helpful. Regular seminars
featuring executives from listed companies, and
networking events with high calibre employers
are just some of the differences which set the
department apart.

the opportunity to learn extensive management
skills which are highly transferable in all areas
