controlleritselforfaultydefrostthermistor.
Ifthecontrollerworkproperlybutdefrostheaterdoesntwork,perhapstheproblem
comingfromDefrostHeater/DefrostRelay/DefrostThermoFuseormaybeelectrical
connectionfaulty.
Note:Electricalcircuitmayvaryformdifferentmanufacture,socarefullylearnitbefore
analyzing.

mode,terminal3willswitchtoterminal2thatgivesasupplytotheheater.Nowhere,
terminal1and3willshareonesupplyduringthedefrostmode,whichwillturnintoshort
circuit,butitwillnotgonnahappen,thedefrosttimerherewillnotworkbecausetheother
terminalhasnopower(terminal1).
Isuggest,thattheterminal1mustgetapowerfromthebluelineoftheheatertocomplete
thecircuit,andthedefrosttimernowwillwork

withtheDefrostHeaterthevoltagedropacrossHeaterisverysmall,itsabout2volts
dropintheHeatersothepowersupplytothetimercoilapprox.218voltor108voltsin
110voltscircuit.TheTimerstillworksproperly.AndwhentheDefrostThermobypass
thetimercoil,theDefrostHeaterwillget220Vor110Vandtimercoilhavenovoltage
betweenthetwoterminal(theTimerstopoperationwhilesystemdefrosted)and
continuethetimecyclewhentheEvaporatortemperaturereachtheDefrostThermocut
inpoint/whenalltheiceformintheevaporatormelted).

InSaudiArabiaaswell..Ididrepairmany110VACnofrostRef.Defrosttimershouldnot
stop,Itislikeaclockwhichhasthedefrostmodefor20to30minsandadvancesthento
coolingmodefor6or8minutes,acycle.Whenthedefrostthermostatopens,itbreaksthe
linegoingtotheheater,thentheheaterwillbeoffeventhedefrostmodeisstillgoingon.
Yousaidtheterminal1gainspowerfromthebluelineoftheheater,defrostheatereither
110VACor220Vacmustbesuppliedwithpowerbothitsline1andline2.Theheaterhere
hasindicatedablueline(sayLine1)andblack(sayline2,willbecomeredwhenthetimer
advancestodefrostortoterminal2),whichiscorrect.Nowtheproblemhereisthedefrost

timeryouwillnolongergetlostintroubleshootingitandconnectingitinacircuit.

HiHermawanthanksforpostingthesewiringdiagrams.Theywerequitehelpfulin
figuringoutadefrosttimerissue.Arepairmanfixedourrefrigeratoryesterday.Ithadbeen
failingtodefrost,sohereplacedthedefrosttimerandadefrostthermostatassemblythat
includeswhatapparentlyisadefrostheaterfuse.Aftertherepairitseemedtoworkfineat
first,sowepaidhimandhewentonhisway.Whenthefrigcametothefirstdefrostcycle,
itdefrostedforalongtime.Wethought,Ok,gooditsfinallygettingridofalltheice
thatsbuiltup.Wecheckedthedraintrayanddumpeditseveraltimes.Itkeptdefrosting.
Evenwhentherewasnothingmoretodefrost,itkeptdefrosting.Itwasstuck.Itwouldnt
comebackon.
Well,itwasntverycoldanymoreandwehadtokeepthefoodfromspoiling,sowe
tinkeredwiththenewdefrosttimerandfoundthatwecouldrestartthefrigbymanually
turningthetimershaftthatsticksouttheback.Itstartedgettingniceandcoldagain.Sothe
emergencywasoverfornowbutnotwantingtohavetodothisagainevery6or7hours,
weneededabettersolution.
Thewiringofthisfrigislikeyourtype1diagramaGeneralElectricmodelfromKorea.
Exactlylikeitexceptthatitalsoincludesafuseinserieswiththedefrostheater.The
problemturnedouttobethatwhentherepairmanreplacedthethermostatandfuse,hegot
twowiresreversed.Lookingatthetype1diagram,supposethatthewirefromterminal1
ofthedefrosttimercamestraightoutandconnectedtothetopendofthedefrost
thermostatratherthanthebottom.Thatshowthisfrigwasnowwired.
Lookingcloselynowaslongasthecompressorisrunning,thetimersteadilyadvances,
beingpoweredthroughthedefrostheaters.Whenthetimerreachesthedefrostcycle,with
theflipofaswitchitturnsoffthecompressor,turnsonthedefrostheater,andturnsitself
off.Thisstateofthingsremainsaslongastheresstillicetodefrost.Whenthedefrostingis
done,thedefrostthermostatopens,turnsoffthedefrostheaters,andifwiredcorrectlyasin
thetype1diagram,turnsthedefrosttimerbackon.Thedefrosttimernowbeginssteadily
advancingagain,andsoonswitchesthecompressorbackon,andwerebackwherewe
started,inthenormalmodeofoperation.
Withthewiringerroronourfrig,mostofthisstillworkedthesame.Thedifferencewasjust
thatoncethetimerturneditselfoff,itwasoffforgood,beingquitethoroughlyshortedout
nowbythedirectconnectionbetweenterminals1&2,withnointerveningdefrost
thermostattobringitbacktolifeatthepropertime.
NowthatIunderstandhowthetype1systemoperates,Imquiteimpressedatitselegance.
Itwillalwaysallowthedefrostingjobtofinishbeforethecompressorisrestarted.Ifalong
defrostingjobisneeded,itwillaccommodatealongdefrostingjob.Ifonlyashort
defrostingjobisneeded,thatswhatitwillprovide.Itdoesawaywiththeinefficienciesof
havingtositandwaitafterthedefrostingjobisdone,waitingforthedefrosttimertofinish
countingoutsomepredeterminedintervaloftimebeforethecompressorcanbestarted
again.
