Lesson Plan for Creative Arts: Halloween Celebration

Background
Before beginning our lesson on creating symbols for
celebrating the American holiday Halloween I will discuss
with my class their experiences with the Holiday. For
instance, in some cultures people celebrate day of the night
instead of Halloween.
English proficiency level: Intermediate Fluency
Grade: 3
Relevant standard (from ODE web site): AR.03. CP.03 Create,
present and / or perform a work of art that demonstrates an
idea, mood or feeling. The students will create a symbol of
Halloween like a black cat to represent the American holiday

Preparation
Content Objectives (CO): Student will design a symbol,
like a black cat that will represent the Holiday-Halloween

Language Objectives(LO): Students will be able to

Materials
Materials: Templates that have Halloween symbols, glue,
scissors, markers and paper.

Have the students break up into groups of 4 to 6 people pass

out the different templates have them discuss between
themselves what template they think their table would like to
complete make sure that it is different than what another
table would be working on, so that the end product would be
a different symbol on each of the tables.

Once the students at each of the separate tables have

decided what template they will work on for their project. I
will model how to use the different templates by using a
symbol that the tables have not shown.
After my demonstration, I will then have the students
working on their own template to create their own symbol.
Each table will work as a group to encourage interaction
even though they each will have their own template. As the
students are working I will go around the room, and make
sure everyone knows what they are doing, and that there are
no questions.

Review:
Each of the students will reveal why they chose the symbol
that they did, and what it means to them. Everyone at the
table will discuss their symbol, and what it means to them in
a round robin (as they go around the table one by one
discussing their symbol)

Lesson Plan for Language Arts: Halloween Celebration

Background:
This lesson Language Arts will tie in directly to the students
Creative Art project of creating a symbol that represents the
Holiday Halloween as they discover more about the holiday
by reading different books about the subject and the symbol
that they have chosen such as a black cat.
English proficiency levels: Intermediate Fluency
Grade: 3
Oregon Standard: 3. W.3 Write narratives to develop real or
imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
descriptive details, and clear event sequences. The students
will read different books, and then will write, create, and
perform a story of what Halloween means to them.
Preparation:
Content Objectives (CO): Students will read different books
on Halloween. Then through small group discussions will
draft a made-up story about Halloween in their discussion
groups. Then summarize it and share it with the whole class.
Language Objective (LO): Students will demonstrate their
knowledge of Halloween by writing a paragraph about the
holiday.
Materials:
Different Halloween books for the students to read, paper for
them to write on, and a writing instrument
Motivation:
The students will form groups in which they will have graphic
organizers to use to come up with different vocabulary words
that a person can use to describe the holiday Halloween such
as ghost, goblins, black cats, and witches. They will then as a
class form a word wall to share their vocabulary findings with
the rest of the class. This activity will help everyone when it
comes to writing their short paragraphs.
Presentation:
This is when I would bring out the different books like 5 black
Cats, Peek-A-Boo, The Night Before Halloween, and

Halloween Stories. I would then have each table come up and

grab a book. They would then go to their table and start to
read aloud stories that pertained to their symbols that they
had created in art class. While the students are engaged in
reading I will go around the room and check to make sure
that all students are comprehending what is being read to
them. I will then assist anyone who is having problems
understanding the stories.
Practice/Application:
Once the stories have been read, and everybody has a good
understanding of the stories I will then have each student
write a short paragraph about the symbol that they have
chosen. This is where the vocabulary words that have been
written on the board will be utilize to create their paragraph.
As soon as the students have completed their stories. Then
they will interact with each to come up with a way to
demonstrate their knowledge on what Halloween means to
them.
Review:
The students will perform a scenario on the story they wrote
that shows the whole class what Halloween means to them.
