Whales

Whales are mammals. They breathe air like us. They rise to the surface of the water to breathe.
They live in the oceans of the world.
There are many different kinds of whales. Some are the killer whale, humpback whale, sperm whale
and gray whale. They are some of the largest animals. The largest whale is the blue whale. It can
grow to be a hundred feet long and weigh as much as 15 elephants. It is the largest animal on earth.
Whales leap out of the water. They also dive and roll. Whales dive to get food. Some whales can
dive more than a mile down!
Some whales are found in zoos, public aquariums, and entertainment parks. These whales live in
large glass tanks. They learn things very easily. They are trained to play with ball, leap, and dive
down deep for certain objects.

Biography
A biography is a true story of a person's life. Another person writes it. This person is known as the author.
Biographies are interesting stories about people's lives. They tell us how people lived and what they did in their
lives. Biographies help us understand many things about other people.
Biographies written about people who lived long ago are more difficult to write than biographies written about
people who are still alive. It is impossible to ask questions of a person who lived two or three hundred years
ago. The author needs to gather the information from writings that the person may have left behind. Some of
these writings might be letters, diaries, and newspaper stories.

Global Warming or Climate Change?

Climate Change is any significant change in the climate of the Earth. These changes can be temperature,
precipitation, wind, humidity, etc. Climate Change occurs because of many things. The heat from the sun and
a change in the Earth's orbit may affect the climate on Earth. The way the oceans on Earth circulate can have
an effect on the Earth's climate. And finally, human activity can change the climate of the Earth. For example,
burning fossil fuels such as gasoline and coal can affect the climate on Earth. Changing the landscape of the
Earth, by cutting forests, filling swamps, laying large amounts of concrete over grasslands, can have a great
effect on the Earth's environment. Global Warming is an average temperature increase in the atmosphere of
the Earth's surface and troposphere. Global Warming can be caused by natural and human events. Too much
carbon dioxide (CO2) introduced into the air can produce Global Warming. Global Warming often refers to a
warming that can occur as a result of increased CO2 emissions by man. This can create a greenhouse effect.
The greenhouse effect traps heat within the atmosphere causing the average temperature of the Earth to
increase. This increased temperature causes ice caps to melt. The melting of the Earth's ice caps causes sea
levels to rise, thus changing the Earth's landscape.

Summer is the warmest of the four temperate seasons which also include winter spring and autumn. It occurs
between spring and autumn. It is known for the longest days and shortest nights. The seasons start on different
dates in different cultures based on astronomy and regional meteorology. However, when it is summer in the
southern hemisphere it is winter in the northern hemisphere, and vice versa. Summer is traditionally associated
with hot dry weather, but this does not occur in all regions. For example, the wet season occurs during summer
across many parts of the tropics and subtropics. Tropical cyclones develop and roam the tropical and subtropical
oceans during the summer. In the interior of continents, thunderstorms are most likely to produce hail during the
afternoon and evening. Schools and universities have a summer break to take advantage of the warmer weather
and longer days.
People take advantage of the warmer temperatures by spending more time outdoors during the summer.
Activities such as traveling to the beach and picnics occur during summer months. Sports such as cricket,
volleyball, skateboarding, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, water polo, and football are played. Water skiing is a
uniquely summer sport, which is done when waters approach their warmest of the year.

The Planets
The Sun is at the center of the planets. Close to it are the inner planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth
and Mars.
Mercury the planet closest to the Sun, is a cratered rock not much bigger than our Moon. It is
incredibly hot and unable to support any kind of life. The atmosphere contains sodium and
potassium.
Venus is the next planet from the Sun and is about the same size as the Earth. The atmosphere
is made up of mainly carbon dioxide. The surface temperature can be as high as 480 degrees
Celsius. There is no life of any kind on the planet Venus.
Earth is the only planet that has the conditions to support life. The surface is neither very cold
nor very hot. Water can exist in all its three forms - as gas, liquid, and solid. These conditions
allow plants and animals to live and reproduce.
Mars, the first planet beyond Earth is smaller than the Earth. The atmosphere is made up
mostly of carbon dioxide. Water exists on this planet, but only in the form of ice. The whole
planet is a red, lifeless desert.
The outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are called the gas giants. They are
much larger than the Earth. The outermost planet, Pluto, is no longer classified as a planet. It is
now called a dwarf Planet. It is so far away, it is a mystery.

Archeologists
Archeologists are scientists who study the remains of past civilizations. They reconstruct the past
by gathering clues. Bones are one kind of clue. Artifacts and fossils are other clues. Artifacts are
objects from the past, usually made by people. Fossils are impressions or remains of animals and
plants that have turned to stone. Archeologists begin to collect evidence at a spot where people
might have lived and worked. Scientists begin to clear away layers of earth to find signs of human
civilization. Archeologists call this spot a site, or dig. Archeologists remove each layer by hand, using
many kinds of tools, from shovels to dentist instruments. They work very slowly because they do not
want to damage the delicate artifacts and fossils buried in the soil. Workers sift the dirt and rubble

through a sieve. They look for things like bits of pottery, tools, seeds, weapons, and bones.
Archeologists record the exact location of every item they find. Then they use high-tech equipment to
determine the age of each item. Archeologists must know as much as possible to identify artifacts.

Mardi Gras Carnival!

Louisiana hosts one of the most well known celebrations - Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday".
This holiday is sometimes called "Shrove Tuesday". People wear masks and costumes, overturn social
conventions, dance, organize competitions and parades. Related popular practices were associated with
celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent.
Today Mardi Gras is celebrated in many parts of the world - Brazil, Belgium, Italy, Panama. The American town
which holds the biggest celebration is New Orleans, Louisiana. It was the French explorers who started this
celebration on the Mississippi River in the late 17th century.
Parades are divided into organizations called "Krewe". These Krewes are responsible for all aspects of their
parades. The parades go in the streets ruled by the "King and Queen." Beads, "doubloons" and cups are thrown
to the throngs of spectators by the riders as souvenirs of Mardi Gras.

POLLUTION and Its Negative Effects

Pollution is the degradation of natural environment by external substances introduced directly or indirectly.
Human health, ecosystem quality and aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity may be affected and altered
permanently by pollution.
Pollution occurs when ecosystems can not get rid of substances introduced into the environment. The critical
threshold of its ability to naturally eliminate substances is compromised and the balance of the ecosystem is
broken.
The sources of pollution are numerous. The identification of these different pollutants and their effects on
ecosystems is complex. They can come from natural disasters or the result of human activity, such as oil spills,
chemical spills, nuclear accidents ... These can have terrible consequences on people and the planet where they
live: destruction of the biodiversity, increased mortality of the human and animal species, destruction of natural
habitat, damage caused to the quality of soil, water and air ...
Preventing pollution and protecting the environment necessitate the application of the principles of sustainable
development. we have to consider to satisfy the needs of today without compromising the ability of future

generations to meet their needs. This means that we should remedy existing pollution, but also anticipate and
prevent future pollution sources in order to protect the environment and public health. Any environmental
damage must be punishable by law, and polluters should pay compensation for the damage caused to the
environment.
