Mayor Bloomberg,
Recent
announcements
to
cut
school-‐based
budgets
by
5%
or
more
and
the
intention
to
layoff
over
6,000
teachers
will
devastate
and
destabilize
our
public
school
system.
The
Department
of
Education
has
already
seen
approximately
$564
million
in
cuts
since
June
of
2009
and
$261
of
that
has
come
directly
from
classroom
funding.
We
demand
you
prioritize
spending
in
our
great
city
and
particularly
within
The
Department
of
Education.
The
IBO
estimates
a
budget
surplus
next
year,
the
Chancellor
announced
five
million
dollars
to
be
spent
on
new
teacher
recruitment,
millions
spent
on
private
contracts,
millions
wasted
on
testing
and
accountability
measures,
increasing
the
number
of
positions
at
TWEED
and
increasing
the
salaries
of
the
top
brass,
all
while
claiming
to
be
in
a
fiscal
crisis
so
great
your
only
choice
is
to
undercut
public
schools
and
their
teachers.
I
strongly
urge
you
to
reconsider
the
target
of
your
cuts
and
spending;
find
other
alternatives
and
protect
our
public
schools
and
public
school
teachers.
Bailouts
for
banks
and
Wall
Street,
but
not
for
our
kids
and
their
education?
Stop
playing
politics
with
our
children;
make
education
your
priority
and
fully
fund
our
public
schools.
No
to
school-‐based
budget
cuts!
No
to
teacher
layoffs!
