Google Books settlement writes new chapter for online student research
JESSICA HOOVER

In the time it takes to decide which

delectable snack to purchase and wrestle
out of a library vending machine, an alter-
native vendor could print you a copy of
your favorite book courtesy of the Espresso
Book Machine.
The Espresso Book Machine is one
example of the growth of electronic
books printed on-demand as a result of
Google Books’ digitization of books in
print. There are currently three university
libraries in the country with the Espresso
Book Machine. They include: University
of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Brigham-Young
University — Pravo, Utah and Missouri
University- St. Louis. The machine allows
students to select a text, pay for printing
and watch the machine print out a personal
copy in minutes. And as of a new agree-
ment with Google Books Sept. 17, students
using Espresso Book Machines may access
and print any of the 2 million books cur-
rently online via Google Books.
Even for schools without the Espresso
Book Machine, the growth of books online
through Google Books will continue to
expand if the New York state courts agree
on the Google Books settlement currently
under review. If the courts approve the
