    2016 Summer Assignment

    Summer reading may be required, but it need not be a chore. There is something here
    for everyone.
    Take a few moments to look up the titles online; Amazon.com provides brief descriptions
    of each work. Choose a book that appeals to you.
    Contemporary Issues: Choose one of the following commentaries on
    contemporary society.
    Ali, Nujood. I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced
    Boo, Katherine. Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity
    Cain, Susan. Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Cant Stop Talking
    Chua, Amy. Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother
    Gladwell, Malcom. David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants
    Hobbs, Jeff. The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace: A Brilliant Young Man Who Left
    Newark for the Ivy League
    Johnson, Steven. Everything Bad is Good for You: How Todays Popular Culture is
    Actually Making Us Smarter
    Kidder, Tracy. Mountains Beyond Mountains
    Kristof, Nicholas D. Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity Worldwide

    Stop four times, at roughly even intervals throughout the book, and write your personal
    response to what youre reading. Are you bothered by the subject? Can you relate to it
    on a personal level? Does the author make claims you find hard to believe? Each entry
    should be approximately 250 words.
    Then, find and print three articles that discuss the same topic as the work you have
    chosen. Your sources may be print or online; please provide a complete MLA citation for
    each. Write a brief summary of each article and your own opinion regarding the issue.
    Each summary should be a minimum of 250 words.
