This document contains the homework assignment for AAE 338 Thermal Sciences due on March 23, 2016. It includes 4 problems related to analyzing properties and processes in thermal systems. The first problem involves finding an equation relating properties at two points in Rayleigh flow. The second calculates temperatures and heat transfer for air flowing in a duct where the outlet Mach number decreases. The third determines heat transfer and changes in properties between two sections of constant-area duct flow. The fourth calculates the maximum possible heat addition and pressure reduction for heated air flow in a gas turbine combustor. Students are expected to abide by Purdue's academic integrity policy when completing the assignment.

Homework 9 (Due on March 23, 2016 before class) 1. For a Rayleigh flow, perform analysis to find the following equation that relates the properties at and . 2 1 12 22 + 1 = = ( ) 1 2 22 12 + 1 2. Air enters a constant-area duct with 1 = 3.0 and 1 = 250. Heat transfer decreases the outlet Mach number to 2 = 1.60. Compute the exit static and stagnation temperature, and find the magnitude and direction of the heat transfer. 3. Consider frictionless flow of air in a constant-area duct. At section , 1 = 0.50, 1 = 1.10 (abs), and 01 = 333. Through the effect of heat exchange, the Mach number at section is 2 = 0.90 and the stagnation temperature is 02 = 478. Determine the amount of heat exchange per unit mass to or from the fluid between sections and , the pressure differnce 1 2, and the entropy difference 1 2 . 4. Flow in a gas turbine combustor is modeled as steady, one-dimensional, frictionless heating of air in a channel of constant area. For acertain process, the inlet conditions are 500, 1.5 (abs), and = 0.5. Calculate the maximum possible heat addition, and Find the reduction in stagnation pressure.
