[THERMAL SCIENCES / HOMEWORK]

AAE 338 Thermal Sciences

Homework 13
(Due on April 20, 2016, before class)
1. The analysis on a mass basis of a gas mixture at 40, 0.1 MPa is 60% N2, 30% CO2, 10%
O2, determine
a. the molecular weight of the mixture
b. the partial pressure of each component, in MPa
2. Two kg of N2 at 450 K, 7 bar is contained in a rigid tank connected by a valve to another
rigid tank holding 1kg of O2 at 300 K, 3 bar. The valve is opened and gases are allowed to
mix, achieving an equilibrium state at 370 K. Determine
a. The volume of each tank, in 3 .
b. The final pressure, in bar.
c. The entropy change of the mixture, in kJ/K.
3. Three ideal gas species (A, B, and C) are put inside an isolated volume chamber with fixed
volume, as shown in the following figure. Assume all three species have the same specific
heat and the same gas constant . Initially equal mole of A, B, and C (1/3 mole each) are
put inside the chamber and separated from each other at uniform temperature and pressure
. The three species are then allowed to mix freely and eventually reach a fully mixed state.
During this process, assume there is no momentum change, no heat addition or heat loss, and
no work to or from the chamber. Find the changes of mixture internal energy , mixture
temperature , mixture density , mixture pressure , mixture enthalphy , and
mixture entropy between the unmixed initial state and the fully mixed final state.

4. Determine the adiabatic flame temperature for constant-pressure combustion of a propane-air

mixture assuming reactants at 298 K for the following three conditions.
a. = 1.0 (complete combustion)
b. = 1.2 (assume all fuel has been converted to CO2 and CO)
c. = 0.8 (complete combustion)
5. Given a fuel rich mixture of C2H4 and air, find the range of possible values of equivalence
ratio such that the products contain CO, CO2, H2O, and N2 only.

work submitted by a student in this course for academic credit will be the students own work. You can discuss questions
from homework with each other, but the final submitted homework should be yours. Purdues student guide on Academic
