AS January

Practical: skills development- testing for functional groups.

Learning how to test for different functional groups. The required practical will come at the
end of the term.

CPAC criteria:
5a

1. Researching and explaining the basis of reactions with functional groups:

2. referencing your sources 5a

3. performing techniques with instruction: 1a
4. doing a risk assessment- use a table- that you modify or improve after the
practical: 3a

What to do.

1. Before next Friday, make a table with three headings: across a double page.
functional group
reagents used and procedure ( brief)
observation inference
2. Research the reactions on the next page and get the equations for a positive test- use
the guide on the next page.
3. You will be using almost all these tests
4. Note that we will test for (alcohols) OH,( carboxylic acid) -COOH, haloalkanes) R-X,
( alkenes) C=C,( aldehydes) RCHO, ( ketones) RCOR.
Research the reagents needed to identify the functional groups in the substances or
distinguish between them. .

You will have access to

A Bunsen burner
Water
Glassware
Fehlings solutions
PCl5
Brady's reagent
Sodium carbonate solution or solid
pH paper/solution
Bromine water
Oxidising agents
Silver nitration solution
Dilute nitric acid
Glass pipettes
Gloves and goggles
Sodium metal if this is used I will have to give you the sodium: not with the carboxylic
acid.
You may find this website helpful but will not get the research mark if you only use this one.
