Seabin, a floating macro-waste and hydrocarbons collector

About the Seabin Project

We have designed and made an automated rubbish bin that
catches floating rubbish, oil, fuel and detergents. It designed for
floating docks in the water of marinas, private pontoons, inland
waterways, residential lakes, harbours, water ways, ports and yacht
clubs.
Can even be fitted to super yachts and motor yachts!

What are the goals for the Seabin Project?

To help rid the oceans of plastics and pollution.

To have a Seabin production in place by mid to end of 2016

and start shipping.

To create Seabins from the most sustainable materials and

processes available.

To have the lowest carbon footprint possible in the production

of the Seabins by means of alternative materials and processes.
Also by reducing shipping and having the Seabins manufactured in
the countries of installation.

To create and support local economies with the production,

maintenance and installation of the Seabins world wide.

To have future models of Seabins for specific locations.

To educate people and cultures about being more responsible

with the use and disposal of plastics.

To setup educational programs for students in schools.

To convert our captured plastics into energy.

To reuse or recycle our Seabins for other uses and or

applications.

To have pollution free oceans with no need for the Seabins.

Plastic pollution in our oceans is a serious issue -- it affects marine wildlife
like whalesand lobsters, and is so persistent that some of these 'gyres'
have formed their own ecosystems. Yikes!
But these bits of plastic contaminating the oceans have to come in from
somewhere, and often it comes from human activities along the shoreline. To
tackle the problem at these entry points, two Australians have invented
something similar to an automated pool cleaner -- but for marinas, harbours,
ports and even inland waters like rivers and lakes -- that sucks up garbage,
while filtering out the water. They're calling it the Seabin, and it recently was
successfully crowdfunded on Indiegogo.
Inventors and surfers Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski both spent their
younger years around the water, and were compelled to quit their jobs to
design a solution they believe will help address the urgent problem of plastic
pollution. The Seabin is designed as an 24/7 alternative to more costly
alternatives like dedicated trash boats or humans trawling harbours for
garbage. It's also small and unobtrusive enough that it can be placed in
"problem areas" in marinas. Say the designers:
The Seabin is more efficient than a marine worker walking around with a
scoop net. By working with these marinas, ports and yacht clubs we can
locate the seabin in the perfect place and mother nature brings us the rubbish
to catch it. Sure we can't catch everything right now but its a really positive
start.
The Seabin is a floating trash bin made from 70 to 100 percent recycled
polyethylene plastic. It's attached to a dock, and uses a water pump to suck
water and trash into its interior, where garbage and other nasty fluids can be
filtered out of the water via a natural fiber bag. Clean(er) water is then pumped
out.

So far, the Seabin team has tested the prototype out in Mallorca, Spain, and it
seems to have been a success. (No fish were harmed). Despite the hefty
price tag of USD $3,825 per bin, the crowdfunding campaign did achieve its
goal, raising more than $240,000 to push the project to the next level. So, we
may see more of these unassuming floating marine filters in the future, ridding
the waters of garbage, one marina at a time. In the meantime, we can all do
our personal part by reducing our plastic waste or going zero-waste all
together. For more information, visit Indiegogo and Seabin Project.

Cleaning the oceans one marina at a time

We have created an automated marina rubbish bin that
collects floating rubbish, debris and oil 24/7

THE SEABIN PROJECT

A simple solution to our oceans pollution

We are excited to introduce our new invention helping to solve, educate and
prevent our oceans pollution problems.
The Seabin is a revolution in ocean cleaning technology. It will help create
cleaner oceans with healthier marine life. The Seabin project is helping create
a better way of life for everyone and every living thing.

How can you guys clean our

oceans one marina at a time?
By starting close to the source of the problem in a
controlled environment.
The marinas, ports and yacht clubs are the perfect place to start helping
clean our oceans. There are no huge open ocean swells or storms inside
the marinas, its a relatively controlled environment. The wind and currents
are constantly moving the floating debris around in our oceans and in every
port, marina or yacht club there is always some pollution heavy areas
based on the predominant wind and current directions.
By working with these marinas, ports and yacht clubs we can locate the
seabin in the perfect place and mother nature brings us the rubbish to
catch it. Sure we cant catch everything right now but its a really positive
start. Its a big mission, but it can be done.

Existing solutions to the

ocean pollution problem.
The existing solutions addressing the oceans
pollution problems is typically the trash
boats These boats drive around harbors and
marinas scooping up rubbish with nets built
into them. They are very expensive to run and
maintain and while they do a lot of good, they
are not very effective according to the marinas
that operate them says Caterina Amengual,
General Director of the environment for the
Balearic islands, Spain.
Marina workers walk around with nets scooping the rubbish out of the corners
where it all converges. Again while these guys they are doing a great job, they
just cannot keep up with the pollution says Eli Dana, General Manager of
Newport Shipyard, Rhode Island.
Bigger scale ocean clean up concepts are also happening. The main one is by
Boyan Slats with The Ocean Clean Up. But at this moment in time its just a
concept, but a great one!

Why is the Seabin better?

Because its here now

Its a solution

Its a prevention

Its educative

It works

Its low cost

Its low maintenance

Its very effective

It works 24/7

The Seabin isnt big or bulky and can fit into the problem corners of marinas
without being obtrusive or taking up dock space for boats. The waste in the
Seabin is collected easily and disposed of responsibly in the already establish
waste disposal system of the marina.
We also have the option to fit an oil/water separator to the system.

The Seabin is located in the water and is fixed to a floating dock. There is a
shore based water pump on the dock running on shore power.
The water pump creates a flow of water into the bin bringing with it all floating
rubbish and debris. The rubbish/debris is caught in a natural fibre catch bag

and the water is then sucked out the bottom of the bin and up to the water
pump where it is then pumped back into the marina.

Who is the Seabin project

targeted at?
Marinas, ports, harbors, yacht clubs, inland waterways, rivers, lakes, private pontoons
and even motor yachts and super yachts. Even boat or business owners that want

to have a Seabin in their local yacht club or marina.

Possible risks and challenges

We have spent a long time perfecting and developing the Seabin protoype
and have minimalized a lot of risks through hard work and dedication.
However we also understand there will be design and material modifications
in our quest of producing the most sustainable product we can afford with our
budget. We have given ourselves a realistic delivery date being mid to late
2016 to begin shipping. If this project goes big than the risk is maybe we will
be slightly later as we may need to upgrade our production line to handle the
orders.
We aim to be completely honest of where we are with the project, we feel we
owe it to our supporters. If we suffer a set back we will let you know, maybe
one of our supporters has the solution!
Our biggest challenge will be if this project goes through the roof with high
orders placed then we need to turn to more sustainable methods of producing

the Seabins. We have contingency plans and designs in place if this happens
(fingers crossed)

Manufacturing
We have a great facility set up at The Sea where we make nearly everything
in house ourselves. But for the first run of the Seabins we will need to
outsource some components and already have suppliers here in Europe on
standby to start producing when we give them the green light. We will then
assemble everything local.

Fulfi llment

We aim to start shipping mid to late 2016. If we can ship beforehand even
better, but we want to be realistic. We anticipate a month or so of tweaking
and refinement of the final product. We want to be sure you have the perfect
product.
To reach our goal we anticipate we need to supply 50 Seabins. We feel this is
also a realistic goal in this time frame. Again, if the project hits the big time
then we need to step up the manufacturing and may take a little longer. But be
rest assured that fulfilling our supporters are our first priority

Seabin development

We have spent a lot of time, energy and money developing the prototype to
the best we possibly could. However there is always room for improvements
and modifications.
We want to build the Seabins in the most sustainable and responsible way we
can afford and to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible.
Put short, the more money we can raise the better we can build the Seabins
and the more efficient they will be.
Imagine building seabins from recycling our own captured plastics and
materials to build more Seabins. Now that would be something!
The Seabins work with floating docks or pontoons only at this stage.

Q. How are the pumps run? Do you have any other plans to power
them?
A. The pumps are currently electric, costing around $20 a month to run. We
are looking into alternative eco friendlier power sources for the near future!

OIL/WATER SEPARATOR DUTY PUMPS

SLIDING SHOE PUMP

LOW SHEAR FOR OILY WATER SERVICE

POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT PUMP

The Megator self priming positive displacement sliding-shoe pump provides exceptional
suction performance, versatility, and the ability to pump at constant capacity against heads to 246
ft (75m). It can run without harm during dry suction, is self compensating for wear, has a simple
design with few working parts and single cover access. It might be said to resemble a

reciprocating piston pump, and it has indeed all the well known merits of that type powerful
suction and self priming, constant capacity at varying heads, the ability to cope with rough
conditions and to handle a great variety of liquids, viscous or free flowing, clean or dirty. Yet in
its simplicity, compactness and even flow it more closely resembles the centrifugal pump. It
therefore combines the advantageous features of both these two main pump types without their
respective limitations.
The Sliding Shoe Pump is ideal for oil/water separator service where electric, gasoline or diesel
motors are required. The positive displacement design does not emulsify the oil into the water so
that the oil/water separator can perform to its maximum capacity.

Positive Displacement Pumps

The Sliding Shoe pump is unique to all other pumps in the world and offers the
advantages of many different pump types in one pump. No other pump has as many
unique design features and benefits.
The Megator self priming positive displacement sliding-shoe pump provides
exceptional suction performance, versatility, and the ability to pump at constant
capacity against heads to 250' (76m). It can run without harm during dry suction, is
self compensating for wear, has a simple design with few working parts and single
cover access to its wear parts. It might be said to resemble a reciprocating piston

pump, and it has indeed all the well known merits of that type - powerful suction and
self priming, constant capacity at varying heads, the ability to cope with rough
conditions and to handle a great variety of liquids, viscous or free flowing, clean or
dirty. Yet in its simplicity, compactness and smooth flow it more closely resembles the
centrifugal pump. It therefore combines the advantageous features of both these two
main pump types without their respective limitations.
