Question: If I were a composer, what piece do I want to write for my instrument?

I would love to write a suite for viola and piano describing this picture Children on a Dune.
Each movement would focus on a certain aspect of the painting: the sunset sky, the shimmering
water, the colorful plants, the playing children. The final movement would have more
flowing rhythm and complex harmony in order to include the different elements described into
one movement. As a continuation of the paintings dusk scene, at the end I would describe the
sky turned totally dark and the two children go back home, everything becoming quiet, only
several stars are hanging on the sky flashing.

For the first movement, I would use a sonata form. Since the sky contains two elements the
flowing white clouds and the shining sun. These two elements would be perfect for the two
contrasting themes of the exposition. I would use G major for the first theme to describe the
clouds, because G major with one sharp gives me a bright, light and flowing feeling. The piano
part would be some chords arpeggio, while the viola plays the expanding melody. For the
purpose of describing the flowing sky, I dont want to keep the same time signature throughout
the whole movement. The time should have the freedom of the wind.

The second movement would describe nature on the earth. I would love to use a Binary form. I
want to use a minor for the beginning A section to describe the shimmering moving water, and
use the relative C major to describe the more colorful trees, grasses and flowers. I choose the two
keys without any sharp or flat because I want to use some adventurous harmonies. The style
would be similar to French Impressionism music. I would love to give the freedom to the players
to let them choose when they end this movement. The players could repeat the two sections
without stop. The purpose is to let the audience feel they are in nature.

The third movement l would use a Scherzo and Trio form in a three four time signature and I
would use G major for the Scherzo and the parallel minor-- g minor for the Trio. The Scherzo
would describe the two children running after each other playing a game, while the Trio would
be more gentle to describe the scene that they are talking to each other and walking in nature.

The fourth movement I would love to use a Rando form, since the general mood of this piece
would be lively and light. I would use D major develop a theme as A section, and then take

motives from different elements of the piece. It would be a

AB(cloud)AC( sun)AD( water)AE( plants) A F(children) A. At the end in order to describe the
quiet dark night and the lonely stars hanging in the sky, I would let piano and viola play eighth
notes alternatively with viola playing pizzicato with morando.
