Senator Wieg

About the Senator:

I am a US Senator that represents the state of New York. I am dedicated to all of the people in my
state that voice opinions on important issues. I am 49 years old and have been in office for 7 years. I was
born in Albany, New York and graduated from Emma Willard School in 1984. My connection to New
York is as strong as my connection to upholding the most efficient government for all citizens. Later, I
attended Dartmouth College, majoring in Asian studies. After interning for a republican senator, I passed
the bar exam and graduated from UCLA School of Law. In 1991 I joined a law firm called Davis Polk &
Wardwell in Manhattan, in an associate position.
I began to pursue interest in women's rights after a famous politician, Hillary Clinton, read an
inspiring speech. I was interested in Hillary Clintons work and became a part of her Senate campaign in
2000. Later, in 2006, I won the election in the House of Representatives in a fairly Republican strength. In
2009 I became the youngest Senator to be in Congress after Hillary Clinton resigned. I won reelection in
the Senate in 2012. Due to all my experience as a politician, I was able to write a book called Off the
Sidelines that discussed my difficult journey as a woman in politics.

Issues:
As a Democratic Senator that represents New York I work to better various issues. One of my
main goals is to rebuild the American economy by providing better paid jobs and helping small business
in the state. I acknowledge the struggling economy and place middle and working class, as my utmost
concern. All of my legislative actions are to better each citizen's lifestyle. I am known for my
empowerment of women and working families. These issues concern womens economic potential in not
only New York, but the rest of the nation. I have been striving for equal pay for equal work between
genders. I have provided better manufacturing jobs in New York. All of these successes have given
progress in the state and nations positive growth.
A major concern of mine is gun control rights. This issue is being discussed all over the nation,
concerning citizens and politicians. Due to many public shootings of innocent people, attention is being

drawn to gun rights provided in the 2nd Amendment. As a mother of two young boys, I recognize the
need to reduce gun violence in our nation to keep our families safe and out of harm. I am taking strong
actions in Congress to enact laws to reduce gun violence and keep guns out of criminals reach. I want
tougher background checks and halt illegal gun trafficking. I want to respect the rights of New Yorkers to
keep their own gun, but keep guns away from criminals.
We need to be able to protect our citizens from violence and destruction. To keep our nation safe
I will be enacting laws to provide safety and security of citizens in New York and the entire nation. For
specific acts and laws that I have voted on to reduce gun violence, visit,

Political Philosophy:
Services:
As a Senator I am always available to the public, allowing citizens express their views and
concerns. I provide options for people to contact me on my website. Anyone can leave comments on
concerning issues that will be sent to me. I pay attention to citizens concerns on issues such as
immigration reforms, healthcare, and women's issues. Constituents may leave contact information and
comments. I also provide individual assistance from a federal agency or immigration case.

Representation Style and Committee:

I take part in several committees in the Senate in order to improve certain issues of the nation. I
serve on the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, Committee on Armed Services,
Committee on Environment and Public Works, Committee on Aging, and Committee of the Judiciary. I
serve as a ranking member on the subcommittee called Domestic and Foreign Marketing, Inspection, and
Plant and Animal Health. I oversee antitrust law and competition policy (federal trade commission
act), competition policy of the Justice Department, Federal Trade Commision, and other federal
agencies.
My approach to representation as a senator is the trustee model. This model is my approach to
legislation because I believe it is important to consider the will of the people, but also essential to enforce
your own beliefs. As a legislature I believe my idea in the long run will support and protect all citizens of
America. This being so, I want to enforce and express my beliefs strongly and still respect and consider
the will of the people.

Updates:
Response to the State of Union Address:

In President Obamas last State of Union address, he announces his proposals for next year and
beyond. Obama directly states his idea about gun violence in future years. Since this is my major issue,
his statement means a lot to the progress of this country. As I have said before, gun violence must end in
order to protect our future generations. He says, protecting our kids from gun violence, as one of his
statements about his future proposals. The president is spot on with his comment towards a safer country.
The only negative for his speech is not mentioning gun rights enough throughout his speech. He only
mentioned one small shout out and didnt speak of the details of his future ideas on gun rights. The
president did tweet prior to the state of the union address saying how the nation will, ...keep guns out of
the wrong hands, enforce our gun laws, and ensure those with serious mental illness get treatment. He
promises to enforce steps to end gun violence including, keeping guns out of the wrong hands during
background checks, increase mental health treatment, reporting to the background check system, and
better gun safety technology. All of these improvements will be steps towards safer communities from
gun violence. I agree with Obama when he states that we need to keep our kids safe and save future lives.
I also agree with the president on our economic progress. I believe that through past years we
have gotten our economy back on track. Obama states that, ...our goal has been a growing economy that
works better for everybody. Weve made progress. For the past seven years our nation has focused on
our economic issues and helped to bring our economy back to success. He says how our nation,
...recovered from the worst economic crisis in generations. The president has brought us out from a
2008 recession and created, ...the strongest, most durable economy in the world. Obama has lowered
the unemployment rate and created 14 million new jobs.
Obama mentions how he wants to keep pushing for the things that need to be done. Gun violence
is a major issue that must be solved. As a country we must work together to achieve success and solve
these problems. Obama reinforces the importance in coming together to face the nations challenges. Our
collective future depends on the willingness to uphold duties as a citizen. To vote. To speak out. To stand
up for others. I believe that our nation needs to come together in order to thrive. Together we can push
legislation like the Family Act for paid leave or progress to stop terrorism. As the president stated during
his speech, We the people. These three yet powerful words encompass the key to this nation's success.
Our agreement for a democratic government should pull both parties together to make these important
decisions. Despite our differences, ...democracy does require basic bonds basic bonds of trust between
its citizens. President Obama touched a Call to Americas Better Nature, in his State of the Union
Address. He has brought attention to the nations future potential and all of the optimistic reform to come.
This is the inspiration that brought me to becoming a politician. I am here to listen and discuss the
peoples needs and create a deep and well-trusted relationship with my fellow co-workers at Congress and
all American citizens.
