In the beginning, there was biology.

It reigned supreme over the other subject areas in

splendour and elegance. It defined and explained the living parts of the world and their
environment. What else is there to know?
An understanding of biology requires a little knowledge of chemistry
Modern biology overlaps with chemistry in explaining the structure and function of all
cellular processes at the molecular level . When applied, Chemical concepts allows us to
construct greater meaning of the more complex biological principles.

Some instances of collaboration of biology and chemistry.

Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. The human body is composed of
trillions of cells. Cells have many parts, each with a different function. Some of these
parts, called organelles, are specialized structures that perform certain tasks within the
cell
To study these specialized functions and how are they performed, we need the help of
Chemistry.
For example
1. In plant cells , the process of photosynthesis is carried out to provide energy to
the plant cell, but to know how is it done , we have to go down to the reaction
6CO2 + 6H2O ------> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Sunlight energy

The chemical reaction helps us to look at the reaction quantitatively as well , for 1
mole of glucose synthesis 6 molecules each of carbon dioxide and water are
required .
2. Protein plays a crucial role in almost all biological processes and amino acids are
the building blocks of it. A large proportion of our cells, muscles and tissue is
made up of amino acids, meaning they carry out many important
bodily functions, such as giving cells their structure. But to understand the exact
mechanism of the reaction , we have to look at the chemical equation . The underlying
reaction is :
NH2CHRCOOH + NH2CHRCOOH
NH2CHRCONHCHRCOOH + H2O
3.

In Gluconeogenesis and Photosynthesis, ALDOL CONDENSATION leads to the

establishment of a C-C bond. This is considered to be an important reaction in the
biochemistry of metabolism, where it is the fifth step of Glycolysis. To understand
the mechanism we have to take help of chemistry.

ADVANCEMENT IN BIOCHEMISTRY !

1. Lowering the cost and environmental footprint of white LEDs

Replacing traditional light bulbs with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) could take a significant bite out of
global energy consumption. But making white LEDs isn't completely benign or budget friendly. To help
reduce the environmental footprint and cost of these lights, researchers have developed the first white
LED with a hybrid, metal-organic framework material.

2. Low-cost and defect-free graphene

Graphene is one of the most promising new materials. However, researchers across the globe are still
looking for a way to produce defect-free graphene at low costs. Chemists have now succeeded in
producing defect-free graphene directly from graphite for the first time.

The life science community is a fast-paced, interactive network with global career opportunities at all levels. The Government recognizes the
potential that developments in biochemistry and the life sciences have for contributing to national prosperity and for improving the quality of life of
the population. Funding for research in these areas has been increasing dramatically in most countries, and the biotechnology industry is expanding
rapidly.
