Approach, method,

and technique
By Licda. Ana Lucia Estrada Domnguez

Language teaching is something

discussed in terms of three related
aspects:

approach, method, and technique

Different theories about the nature of

language and how languages are learned
(the approach) imply different ways of
teaching language (the
method) and
different methods make use of different
kinds of classroom activities (techniques)

METHODOLOGY

Pedagogical practices in general

(including research), how to teach

APPROACH

Theoretically well-informed positions and

beliefs about the nature of language, the
nature of language learning, and the
applicability of both to pedagogical
settings.

METHOD
A generalized set of classroom
specifications for accomplishing linguistic
objectives. Methods tend to be concerned
primarily with teacher and student roles
and behaviors and secondarily with such
features as linguistic and subject-matter
objectives, sequencing, and materials.

SYLLABUS
Designs for carrying out
a particular language
program.

TECHNIQUES

Any of a wide variety of

exercises, activities, or
tasks used in the language
classroom for realizing
lesson objectives.
