BMW Air Bag Restraint System
BMW;

3 Series

* PLEASE READ THIS FIRST *

WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and
carefully follow all WARNINGS and SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.
DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The main components of Supplementary Restraint System (SRS)

include a driver-side air bag module (located in center of steering
wheel), passenger side air bag module (located inside dash, above
glove box), electronic SRS control unit, contact ring, energy
capacitor/voltage transformer (integrated into SRS control unit), SRS
warning light, driver-side knee bolster mounted under steering column,
seat belt contacts and seat occupancy module. See Fig. 1. For SRS to
operate properly, 3-point seat belts must be worn.

When SRS control unit senses an impact, it transmits a
voltage signal to gas generator pellets in air bag modules. The
voltage signal ignites gas generator pellets to produce a quantity of
non-toxic nitrogen gas.
In the air bag modules, the nitrogen gas passes through a
tiny filter to fill and deploy the air bags in about 30 milliseconds.
After the air bags inflate to maximum expansion, the nitrogen gas is
released away from driver through 2 ventilation holes in rear of air

bag. The air bag inflation and collapse sequence takes about 30-35
milliseconds.
SRS ACTIVATION

SRS is activated when SRS control unit (ZAE system) detects a

frontal impact exceeding programmed threshold. The SRS control unit
will look at the status of various sensors and deploy different parts
of the SRS system as needed. Both front seat belt latches are equipped
with micro-switches wired to the SRS control unit. Driver-side air bag
will not be deployed by the SRS control unit if driver seat belt is
buckled and impact severity is light. If belt is not buckled, vehicle
is in a sharper frontal impact, driver-side air bag will deploy.
Passenger-side front seat is equipped with a seat occupancy sensor, an
analog load sensor that sends a varying signal to the Seat Occupancy
Module (SBE).
The SBE module converts the analog sensor input to digital
output and sends it to the SRS control unit. Passenger-side air bag
will be deployed in a light impact if control unit determines front
passenger seat is occupied and seat belt is not buckled. In a sharper
frontal impact, air bag will deploy regardless of seat belt status. In
a severe frontal impact, air bag will deploy even if seat is not
occupied. In the event a frontal impact occurs while SRS control unit
detects faults in any sensors, control unit will deploy both air bags.
CONTACT RING

Contact ring (mounted on steering column, under steering

wheel) is a continuous loop of wire ribbon that forms an electrical
circuit between the steering wheel and steering column. See Fig. 1.
This wire ribbon winds and unwinds to ensure electrical contact when
the steering wheel is turned. A replacement contact ring may come with
a lock screw to keep the contact ring centered until it is installed.
For centering procedure, see CONTACT RING under ADJUSTMENTS.
DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE

Driver-side air bag module consists of an inflatable air bag,

gas generator and ignitor. See Fig. 1. The gas generator and ignitor
make up the inflator unit, which is mounted permanently on rear of air
bag module.
A 2-wire connector with gold-plated terminals is mounted
inside inflator unit, at rear of air bag module. When 2-wire connector
is disconnected, a safety shorting spring inside inflator connector
spreads open, touching both terminals. This prevents air bag module
from inflating if voltage is accidentally applied across terminals.

PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE

Passenger-side air bag module is installed inside dash, above

glove box. See Fig. 1. It is accessible by removing tray or panel on
top of passenger side instrument panel. Air bag module consists of
large inflatable air bag, 2 gas generators, and 2 igniters. Air bag
fully inflates in about 35 milliseconds. Gas is then released through
a filtered vent on the windshield side of the air bag, causing it to
deflate.
ENERGY CAPACITOR

If normal power source (battery voltage) is interrupted

during a collision, energy capacitor inside SRS control unit supplies
SRS power. If energy capacitor fails, a code sets.
SEAT BELT CONTACTS

Seat belt contact sensors are used to signal SRS control

unit. Both front seat belt latch assemblies are equipped with microswitches. SRS control unit utilizes switched ground input signal to
determine seat belt status. Not all vehicles are equipped with this
system.
SEAT OCCUPANCY MODULE (SBE) (ANALOG TO DIGITAL CONVERTER)

Output signals from the passenger-side seat occupancy sensor

pad are converted from a varying analog signal to a digital pulse
signal by the SBE. This signal is then sent to the SRS control unit to
assist it in making deployment decisions. SBE module is located under
passenger seat.
SEAT OCCUPANCY SENSOR PAD

Front passenger seat cushion is equipped with a foil contact

sensor. If front passenger seat is occupied, seat occupancy detector
will send a varying analog signal to the SBE. This signal varies in
direct proportion to the weight or movement of seat occupant. Not all
vehicles are equipped with this system.
SRS CONTROL UNIT (SRS DIAGNOSTIC UNIT)

The SRS control unit is located underneath and between rear

seats. See Fig. 1. SRS control unit contains an internal safety
sensor. If SRS control unit safety sensor senses an impact, it applies
voltage to the air bags. The SRS control unit also features a selfdiagnostic system that monitors the SRS for faults. If a fault is
detected, a code sets in SRS control unit memory.
SRS WARNING LIGHT

When ignition is turned on, SRS warning light illuminates

with other instrument panel lights. If no faults are sensed in the

SRS, the warning light will go out after about 6-10 seconds with
engine off, or go out immediately when engine is started. If SRS
warning light remains on, this indicates a fault in SRS. When vehicle
is moving, SRS control unit informs driver of any faults in SRS by
flashing SRS warning light for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the SRS
warning light will remain on until fault is repaired and SRS control
unit defect fault code memory is cleared. If SRS warning light fails
to illuminate when ignition switch is turned on, this indicates bulb
is faulty and/or wire circuit to bulb is shorted to ground.
VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER

Voltage transformer is an integral part of SRS control unit.

Voltage transformer boosts SRS power supply voltage to 35 volts to
ignite gas generator pellets in air bag module.
WIRING HARNESS

For easy identification, SRS wiring harness is Orange in

color. SRS wiring harness is not repairable. It must be replaced if
faulty.
SERVICING

Look at date specified on SRS label attached to glove box

door. This date indicates when the SRS must be serviced. Servicing
consists of thoroughly inspecting all SRS components and performing
a SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

Turn ignition switch to ON position. If SRS warning light

does not come on, SRS warning light bulb or circuit is faulty. If SRS
warning light comes on and then goes out after about 6 seconds, SRS is
okay at this time. If SRS warning light does not respond as specified,
SRS is malfunctioning and must be repaired.
SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

Observe these precautions when working on SRS:

*

When working around steering column and before any repairs

are performed, disable SRS. See
DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR
BAG SYSTEM.
* Always ensure radio is off before disconnecting battery. This
will prevent damage to radio microprocessor.
* Before straightening damaged metal or arc-welding, disable
SRS and disconnect front sensors. See
