PERFORMANCE NOTES
Considered by many (including John Lennon and Paul McCartney) to
be one of the Beatles best songs, In My Life made its debut on the
Beatles classic 1965 album Rubber Soul. I have written this arrangement in a way that would apply well to large concert choirs or select
smaller ensembles.
The arrangement will be most successfully realized if the director
determines phrasing based on the text. Try to achieve a natural, speechlike line that delivers the lyric message of the song, even if this means
slightly altering the rhythms and tempi written. When parts are divided I have merely suggested possible divisi. Please choose whatever
divisions work best for your choir.
The solos (mm. 1-4, 8-14, 28-34 and 46-48) may be sung by a male or
female, as a duet, or by a select few voices. Soloists are encouraged to
explore their own creativity and even alter the melody and rhythms that
are written (slightly!), as long as artistic integrity is maintained.
Although I have taken great care to keep the voice leading relatively
simple, some chords may present a challenge to your singers aural
skills. I suggest rehearsing by repeatedly moving back and forth
between changing harmonies.
Have fun and enjoy the rehearsal and learning process as you and your
students strive for beautiful choral singing on an a cappella ballad.
