Capacitors

Capacitor Types:
Categorized by type of dielectric materials
1. General purpose:
Coupling capacitors in filters/ amplifiers
Dielectric materials: paper (impregnated with oil or wax), mylar,
polystyrene, mica, glass, or ceramic
2. Ceramic dielectric:
High frequency applications
Barium titanates (a large capacitance-to-volume ratio because of their
high dielectric constant)
Mica, & glass (also used)

Capacitors

Capacitor Types:
3. Aluminum Electrolytic:
a pair of aluminum plates separated by a moistened borax paste
electrolyte
High values of capacitance in small volumes
Filtering, bypassing, and coupling
Power supplies and motor-starting applications
Tantalum
electrolytic
capacitors have lower losses
and
more
stable
characteristics than those of

Capacitance:
Tendency of a device to store charges
Measured in coulombs per volt or farads (F)

If 10 of the 100-F capacitors in series for an equivalent 25-V capacitor
The energy stored in this equivalent capacitor is 3125 J
Requires 147 electrolytic capacitors in parallel to store that much energy

Dimensions:
dimensions of a simple equivalent capacitor consisting of two parallel plates
each of area A, separated by a distance d

 : Permitivity of free space = 8.85 x 102 F/m

For a 100F capacitor, the plates are separated by a distance in air of the
thickness of one sheet of oil-impregnated paper, which is about 1.016 x 104
