Having his dream job

Woeste manages custom

chopping business
By MISSY MUSSMAN
Staff Writer

LONG PRAIRIE Ever

since Tim Woeste was young,
being around and working
with farm equipment has been
a passion of his.
Ive always been an
equipment fanatic, Woeste
said. Anything that dealt with
tractors, I loved.
Now, Woeste works with
farm equipment for a living
through his business, Tim
Woeste Custom Harvesting,
and a business he is a partner
in, Upper Midwest Pumping,
which are both managed out
of Long Prairie.
I enjoy everything about
it, Woeste said.
This year marks Woestes
third season, which runs from
the last week in May to the
end of September, custom
chopping alfalfa and corn.
Woestes 15 clients are
predominantly from central
Minnesota and consist of dairy
and beef producers.

We have 300-cow dairies

to 1,500-cow dairies. We
have all different sizes of
operations, Woeste said. Our
customers have stayed with us
from year to year.
To keep those clients
coming back, Woeste and his
team have one goal.
There are a lot of custom
choppers out there, so the
biggest thing for us is to get
the forages off the fields in a
timely manner in order to put
up good, quality feed for our
customers, Woeste said. It
affects their bottom line.
In order to achieve that
with nearly 13,000 acres
8,000 of which are alfalfa and
5,000 in corn silage Woeste
has several tractors and two
self-propelled choppers.
Both choppers are new
this year and are around

Lessons of life on the farm

Fisknesses relish
simple country lifestyle
By JENNIFER COYNE
Staff Writer

OSAKIS Calves and pigs have

to be fed, chickens have to be checked
and children have to begin their
schoolwork.
Mornings around Steadfast Acres
may seem hectic, but for the Fisknesses,
an aura of simplicity is ever present as
they nurture their family with the land,
both mindfully and physically.
The Lord has really blessed us,
Luke Fiskness said. This is home. We
love the people in the community and
are fortunate to be in a culture where
we give apples and get tomatoes.
Luke and his wife, Katie, live on an
80-acre farm near Osakis, where they
raise their five children Ezekiel, 8,
Kaia, 7, Jude and Livi, 4, and Titus, 4
months old.
Over the course of their 10-year
marriage, the Fisknesses adopted Kaia,
Jude and Livi.
All lives matter to us and are
special to God, said Katie, who is

from Tennessee. Adoption is our

way of playing a part in making that
happen.
Previously living in North Dakota,
following Lukes profession in youth
ministry, the Fisknesses wanted to find

purpose closer to family; in 2010, they

purchased Lukes childhood home
located next to his brothers home and
near his parents new residence.
We both had a desire to be in the
country, Luke said. This lifestyle

gives us a flexibility that the kids love.

In Lukes current position, he
spends many weekends away from
home. To maximize their time together,
the Fiskness couple homeschool their
children and incorporate hands-on
learning experiences around the farm.

It really works well for us, Luke
said.
Katie, who has a background in
childhood development, agreed.
Every child has a different style
of learning and different needs that
wouldnt get met in a traditional
classroom, she said. They all get to
go at their own speed.
The children are taught traditional
courses like history, math and reading,
but also valuable lessons such as the
cycle of life, appreciation for the land
and working together for a greater
good.
Luke and Katie and their children
raise Icelandic sheep, Berkshire hogs,
chickens, and beef and dairy cattle,
among many more animals for food
production. Additionally, they tend to
a garden that provides an ample supply
of fruits and vegetables.

Rite of passage

Silo filling. Its part of the fall rites of passage in farm country. The small
grains have been finished for a while and the beans arent quite ready to
combine, so silo filling is whats happening.
Oh that smell! I love the smell of freshly-chopped corn silage. Like freshlycut hay, theres just something about it. Hopefully everyone
who grew up on the farm has favorite memories, and one of
mine was the exciting time when this project began.
In the 60s, in my early years, we always had a silo-filling
crew come in to help with the chopping. Everyone would work
together until the job was finished, then dad would return the
favor, helping out at their farms until they were done. Or vice
versa.
We had a bunker silo that they always started with before by Diane
the uprights. It was fun to wait until they had enough silage to Leukam
jump down into the pile. As an adult, it doesnt sound like such
a good idea anymore, so please dont try this at home. However, the fun was
short-lived, because it didnt take long and the bunker was full.
Mom had her share of hard work in those days as well, cooking for the
crowd, and bringing lunch out to the fields, all while doing the evening chores
with us kids.
Its unbelievable how silo filling has changed in a century. I once did a
painting of a silo-filling scene from the early 1900s. A man with a pitchfork
stood on the top of a hayrack pulled by a team of horses. He pitched hay, in this
case, onto a conveyor belt that fed into an early type of blower which sent the
hay to the top of the silo. Watching over the blower was a woman wearing a hat
and a long dress. The blower was powered by belts that were hooked up to an
old tractor, and standing on the back of the tractor was a tall, lanky young man.
That man was a great-uncle of mine, and the woman, I believe, was his
mother. Sadly, the story goes, he was killed in a farm accident at a young age.
If they could have looked ahead in time, those relatives of mine would have
seen people still filling upright silos, albeit much bigger ones and with more
powerful equipment.
For this issue of Country Acres, I thought you might enjoy reading about
one of the custom harvesters in the area, and Tim Woeste of Long Prairie
agreed to tell us his story. The equipment being used today, and the volume of
the crops they can harvest in no time at all, would have made my great-uncles
head spin. It makes my head spin!
Theres even a new form of silage called shredlage, which I hadnt heard
of before this story was written. How things have changed in the last decade.
You may have heard the old saying, The only thing that is constant is
change. A wise man named Heraclitus said that2,500 years ago.
Theres a couple of things in farming that havent changed, though. It
still takes teamwork to get the job done, and farming is still a very dangerous
occupation. I hope the harvest season goes well for your team, and please
remember, safety first.
And if youre out on the highways and byways, please be aware of farm
equipment and keep your distance. I promise, whatever youre driving will be
no match for it, and the few seconds you might save by not slowing down could
cost someones life. Ive hauled many loads of silage on a busy state highway,
and the risks people are willing to take to save those few seconds are really
quite stunning.
Fall is definitely here. As I was writing this on Tuesday morning, a coworker came in to the office and said it was supposed to get down to 40 degrees
that night. Its time to pull out the sweatshirts and bulky sweatersand life is
good.

WOESTE continued from page 1
$700,000 each, Woeste said. Theyre
like a kid. Youre tending to them all
the time. Were constantly maintaining
them.
Although he uses semis to transport
the forages, he does not own all of
them.
I hire that out, Woeste said. That
would be too much otherwise.
Along with his own equipment,
Woeste also has 15 people working
with him on two different crews.
Its not just me. I typically have
eight people on each crew with me
running one of the choppers, Woeste
said. But when we do haylage, I have
a few more people helping because we
have to cut and merge it before we can
chop. Theres a few more steps with
that.
Woeste waits until the alfalfa is
between 55 to 60 percent moisture
before he starts chopping.
Theres no set time we start hay
on any given day. It all depends on
when the hay is fit to chop, Woeste
said. But once its ready, we go.
Woeste and his team chop an
average of 40 acres per hour taking 75
feet in one pass of hay.
But in order to get the alfalfa up
in time before rain hits or it gets too
mature, Woeste and his crew put in
long hours.
Sometimes it requires us to put
in 24-hour shifts, Woeste said. We
push through until its done. We try to
switch guys out so we can keep going.
However, Woeste himself has put
in a few 24-hour shifts.
I have a hard time shutting down
for the night when all the action is
going on, Woeste said.
For the last few years, Woestes
clients averaged four cuttings of alfalfa,
but this year, half of his customers did

custom harvesting 5,000 acres of corn this year.

five cuttings, while the other half did

four.
That certainly was different, he
said.
Even though there are 3,000 less
acres of corn than alfalfa that Woeste
chops, corn silage is the main ingredient
in most of his clients rations. That is
why Woeste is just as particular with
chopping corn at 68 to 69 percent
moisture and getting it off the fields in
a timely manner like he does with the
alfalfa.
However, their schedule for
chopping corn is not always as hectic
like hay with their days starting at 7
a.m. and finishing at 11 p.m.
We typically run 16-hour days,
but will push through if we need to,
Woeste said.
When opening a field, Woeste starts
in front with his self-propelled chopper
with four or five semis following in
behind him.

That first pass, I aim the spout

straight back and a little higher so I can
aim the corn silage to go right into the
open top of the semi trailer, Woeste
said.
As soon as one is full, Woeste
pauses from chopping to allow the full
semi to leave the field while the next
semi gets behind him to keep going.
After our first pass, the semis
drive next to me, Woeste said.
With that tight routine and taking
25 feet off per pass, Woeste and his
crew can typically get 220 to 230 tons
of corn silage up per hour.
With the 5,000 acres we chop, we
can get 100,000 tons or better up in a
year, Woeste said.
Besides basic corn silage,
Woeste also makes shredlage from
the corn using his Shredlage Kernel
Processor.
Its like corn silage, but the
processor cuts the corn in two different

directions and breaks down the small

pieces of the corn stalks in the silage to
make it more digestible for the cows,
Woeste said.
Currently, 75 to 80 percent of his
customers he chops corn silage for do
shredlage.
More people want to do it,
Woeste said. Its gotten me some more
jobs because I am able to do this.
Woeste grew up around livestock
and farm equipment, and eventually
started working for one of his friends
that had choppers.
I was 16 when I started driving
one of these, Woeste said. It grew on
me.
Eventually, Woeste became a
partner in Upper Midwest Pumping.
Even doing pumping, there was
still too much time in the summer to do
nothing, Woeste said. So, I decided
to take the leap and start my own
custom chopping business.
Since then, Woeste has had a lot of
success and challenges.
The biggest challenge we face
is the mud, Woeste said. Ill never
forget my first year doing this, it was
so slimy and wet we couldnt pull the
semis with the quad tracks.
Looking ahead, Woeste hopes to
expand his company, but not at the
expense of losing the clients he has
already.
If it entails not helping them, Im
not sure I want to do it, he said.
But for now, hes enjoying doing
custom harvesting work for the dairy
and beef farmers.
Nothing makes me smile more
than when a farmer calls me to say
their cows are producing 100 pounds
of milk per day off their forages and
knowing that I was a part of that, he
said. Its my dream job.

With all the animals and

Our kids are understanding the

Each child has a responsibility with

Our children are given chores to

Luke said. Some are challenging, but

RICHMOND The typical use of cement can

vary from sidewalks to foundations of houses, but for
a group of roughly ten individuals their use of cement
is used for more than just structured purposes. It is
used recreationally. Between the ten people, they
have created numerous cement sculptures mostly out
of recycled, secondhand products and finished them
with cement.
This talented and creative bunch of friends
includes Margaret and Miles Hubbard of Richmond,
Peggy LaDue and Dale Zimmerman also of
Richmond, Jan and Mike Dockendorf of Cold Spring,
Bill and Nancy Bronson of Avon and MaryLee and
Gary Dockendorf of Richmond.

The arch is made with rebar, lath and cement decorated

with broken secondhand glass and tile. It was a birthday
gift to Peggy LaDue from a group of her talented
friends.

Margaret Hubbard made her own pizza oven after

seeing that her friends, Mary Lee and Gary Dockendorf,
had built their own. It is one of many of Hubbards
cement creations.

A couple of summers ago Margaret saw and

admired MaryLee and Garys handmade pizza oven
that was built outside of their home. With Mary Lees
help, Margaret tackled her own pizza oven project.
You have to have the willingness, said
Margaret.
Creating a strong and solid cement base, she
fashioned a dome out of brick sealed with mud and
cement. Because the oven needed to be equipped for
high heat, she used special fire cement. To create a
tight seal, Margaret created a wooden door specially
made for the opening on the front of the oven. The
oven gets so hot that it can cook a pizza within
three minutes. The pizza oven created a passion that
quickly became contagious.
Nancy had given Margaret a grotto because she
knew Margaret could use it for one of her inventive
projects. Little did Nancy know, she would get it
back as a birthday gift.
You feel more energized when you do something
for someone, Margaret said. The old and broken
structure was re-cemented and stained. While it was
wet, Margaret and MaryLee strategically placed
colorful gems, broken glass and shattered tile pieces
within the cement. After it cured, it was sealed for
protection from the Minnesota weather. The oncedingy structure turned into a beautiful and colorful
work of art that glistens when the sun hits it just right.

Feather shaped mirror pieces were

placed on the wings of the angel to
reflect the light. Jan wants to add a
colorful solar light in the center of the
bowl to illuminate the water.
You have to think outside the
box, Jan said.
After everything was completed, it
took roughly 30 hours to complete the
over 2,000-pound sculpture.
Everyone involved within this
group loves tackling new projects.
A lot of it is about recycling.
Turning old stuff into new things,
Margaret said.
Everyones yards are filled with
sculptures and creative displays, from
a sculpted mermaid, which Margaret
and her sister, Christine Ahmed helped
with, to a Chinese lantern that Mike
accidentally tipped over and broke while
mowing the lawn, but quickly repaired
with cement afterward. Decorative
cement leaves lie in Margarets yard,
made from the imprint of a rhubarb
leaf. Peggy made an intricate castle
equipped with multiple towers, flags
and brick designed cement, displayed
in her sister, Lee LaDues, yard. Many
more sculptures fill the groups yards.
Bill talked about the advantage
of their selected material and stated,
You can form cement and it will
last. Margaret said that she likes
cement as the main material because it
differentiates their art from craft.
The group of down-to-earth friends
has helped one another create these
beautiful pieces so others can enjoy the
sight of them as well.
We all like big, Margaret said.
Bill seconded that by saying, Bigger
is better.
What continues to drive all of
their ambitions is when they look
at other peoples work. Jan said, It
starts from an idea and develops with
collaboration.
Everyone has different artistic
talents, Jan said. Its just a different
kind of art.

The group of friends, all 55

and older, started to make another
birthday gift, this time for Peggy. This
project was built from scratch. Mikes
experience in welding came in handy.
He welded together two arches made
of rebar, while welding a metal sun
into the center of the arch. Margaret
and Jan used lath, similar to chicken
wire, to form an outer structure over
the rebar.
Thats the stuff that cuts the snot
out of your hands, Margaret said.
Cement was added to fill in the
sculpture. The group didnt like what it
looked like at first so they added more
cement to bulk it up.
Whats nice about working with
cement is if you dont like something,
it is easy to fix, Margaret said.
A moon sits on the top of the arch,
green moon-like glass pieces were
placed within the cement along the
sides and red and white star shaped tiles
were placed within the cement near
the top and bottom. After everything
was complete, it was sealed. It took
about 60 hours total to complete the
sculpture between collecting supplies
and manual labor.
After roughly 30 hours, another
sculpture was completed by Jan, Mike
and Margaret. Together they created an
angel birdbath, MaryLees idea, in the
middle of Jan and Mikes flowerbed.
The sculpture is made out of cement,
chicken wire and stain.
I wanted to make a universal
angel that anyone can identify with,
said Jan.
They started out with a rockier
cement mix and gradually moved to
finer cement for the outer layer. The
angel is placed in a flying position,
her back as the bowl for the water.
Curled metal rods with marble beads
were placed in her head to give the
impression of Rasta-colored hair
(yellow, red, green and black), with the
help of Jan and Mikes grandkids.

which is just pass the tree line.

The hunting and fishing is great
out here, Jamie said. Its kind of nice,
I dont have to travel far for something
I love to do.
Food is not an issue for the
Gertkens, as they are fueled by
their orchard consisting of 22 pears,
peaches, apple and plum trees. They
also tap their own maple syrup and
then can it. In the backyard, lies a
chicken coop 15 of them crowing
at the crack of dawn. The family
spends many summers and early falls
tending to their one-acre garden where
they grow corn, pumpkins, potatoes,
onions, corn, beans, broccoli, squash,
watermelon and zucchini.
In their shed, they have a walkin cooler where they store the apples,
maple syrup and beverages. They
also have an old bulk tank that Jamie
transformed into his own smokehouse.
We butcher our own meat from
the cattle on Jamies parents farm,
Cassie said.
And the outdoor activities are
endless when it comes to things to do.
There is a two-mile trail in their
woods where the family enjoys going
four-wheeling. Over time, Jamie has
built a few bridges over the ditches on
the trail mostly for safety but, also for

an aesthetic appeal.
The kids have plenty to do as there
is a swimming pool, a swing set and
a play house which was built with the
leftover rock, logs and tin siding from
the newly added portion of the shouse.
And in the winter months, the
Gertkens heat their home with a wood
boiler.
Id say we go through 12 to
15 cords of wood a year to heat this
place. It heats the water underground,
Jamie said. If we run out then we use
propane for backup.
The Gertkens enjoy hosting family
gatherings and dont have a problem
finding space for everyone 30 people
that is.
Last year we had a Christmas
party and 20 people spent the night,
Cassie said. Seven vehicles were able
to park in our garage so space isnt a
problem.
They have an additional shed for
storage of their camper and boat.
Jamie and Cassie plan on sticking
around to enjoy the sunsets and
beautiful views for as long as they can.
After all, Its a good place to raise
a family, theres enough storage space
and for us a necessity for Jamies line
of work, Cassie said.

The Gertkens live near the Sauk River, where they can take in the beautiful views.

Schultz strives
for excellence as
an award-winning
auctioneer

Sold!

By LIZ VOS
Staff Writer
The goal of an auction is to get
the fair and true value for an item,
from farm equipment and real estate
to antiques and livestock. While fastpaced events are filled with excitement,
the very livelihood of the seller could
be depending on the days bottom line
and at the center of all the action is the
auctioneer.
Isaac Schultz grew up surrounded
by auctions. His parents, Mike and Jan
Schultz, founded Schultz Auctioneers
in 1978 and thus introduced their oldest
son to the business early on in his life.
Now 25, Schultz works between 50
and 80 auctions each year through his
familys business in addition to his own
freelance work running 50 auctions in
a year.
He also balances his auctioneering
work with his role as the Legislative
Assistant to Minnesota Speaker of the
House Kurt Daudt. While he greatly
enjoys his work in the political arena,
Schultz is happy to follow his passion
as an auctioneer, always striving to
improve, even after the awards have
been won.
Auctions are a fast, fun and

also an auctioneer, looks on.

transparent way of moving assets from

one person to another, he said. This
is an industry where there is always
room to do better and learn more while
also helping people.
To be successful as an auctioneer,
you have to have rhythm and speed,
but you also need to be clear or you
will not last long, Isaac pointed out.
All of that is put to the test at

any auction, but is even more so at

competition, Schultz said.
Schultz, who is an active member
in the Minnesota State Auctioneers
Association
and
the
National
Auctioneers Association, is a regular
competitor and placed 5th in the
2012 Minnesota State Auctioneers
Championship.
But this past January, he took
his talent to the next level, winning
Minnesota
State
Auctioneers
Championship he was just 24 at
the time of the win, which makes
him only the second person to win
at that age (no one younger has ever
won). He also went on to compete
in his 5th International Auctioneers
Championship in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Often referred to as the Super Bowl
of auctioneering, Schultz became a
finalist out of the 95 competitors from
around the country in the event.
During competition, auctioneers
are center stage, putting forth their
speed, skill and style for the judges.
The high-intensity gets the adrenaline
going, Schultz said, and that is what
draws him to it.
At those events, you are
competing to be the best you can be,

he said. The critiques given by judges
are very beneficial.
Schultz recently looked back on
the roots that grew his passion for the
trade and he points out that it wasnt
just one moment that made him decide
to pursue his work, but rather a series
of experiences that slowly peaked his
interest. He began really picking up on
other auctioneers by the time he was
16; not only from his dad and an uncle
who is also in the business, but from
any auctioneer he had the chance to
hear.
I started finding my own rhythm
as I listened to others and eventually
I really found my own chant that fit
me, he said. Of course, the chant is
going to change over time I am still
working on it.
After becoming a bid caller in
2007, Schultz went on to auctioneering
school in 2009 at the World Wide
College of Auctioneering in Mason
City, Iowa. At the time, he was still
a high school student (he is a 2010
graduate of Upsala High School).
During his eight-day course in Iowa,
Schultz learned the business of auctions
as well as the markets. But most of
the time, he said, he spent with other
auctioneers, listening and learning.
Not only did I get to meet the other
students, I also was able to learn from
champion auctioneers and instructing
auctioneers while I was there, he said.
Schultz compares much of his
auctioneer training to sports, noting
that practice and perseverance are vital
to success; as is the ability to work the
crowd.
I grew up involved in athletics and
I also always enjoyed the performing
arts, he said. So in a lot of ways, this
work has allowed me to carry those
passions on.

Isaac Shultz is the Minnesota State Auctioneers Championship winner for 2016. Above he works at an auction in rural Osakis.

And those passions keep pushing

him forward.
Thinking you have reached your
full potential is just not a good place to
be in business or in life, Schultz said
before referencing a favorite quote by
Vince Lombardi that states, Perfection
is not attainable, but if we chase

perfection we can catch excellence.

Schultz knows that finding
excellence, as an auctioneer, will not
only satisfy him, but will also help
the seller he is working with reach
their goal, whether they are a business
person, a family auctioning a property
or a group holding an auction to benefit

someone in need. Awards aside, its the

people and the passion that drive him
in this exciting trade.
We deeply care for those involved
in the auction, he said. Helping
people is a big part of the fiber of most
auctioneers. It is a wonderful industry
to be a part of.

COLD SPRING Brad Matuska is on a mission

to keep soil sustainable as long as possible.
As a society, we use most resources faster than
nature can replace them, he said. The opportunity
to take a waste product and make it into a valueadded product to grow plants can help sustain our
ability to maintain soils that grow healthy plants and
food.
Matuska is co-owner, along with Dean Miller,
of Mississippi Topsoils, a firm that makes soils for
all types of planting applications. Their products are
sold under the tradename, Soil Essentials.
The vision of the business is to be a regional
green industry leader by sustainably creating
superior soil products while providing excellent
customer service that results in an extraordinary
plant growing experience for its customers. It works
toward that goal by creating products that help grow
plants and food.
Matuska has a life-long interest in soil, but

was not aware of the soil making industry when he

graduated from college. After graduating from St.
Johns University, he worked for a time with a firm
that made in-vessel composting equipment.
In 1998, when the opportunity came to partner
with Gold n Plump Poultry (now GNP Company),
we started the business. It just made a lot of sense,
he said.
Mississippi Topsoils uses the rinse water from
the GNP processing plant as the base for its soils.
The plant processes about one million birds a
week, said Matuska. Most of the by-products go to
rendering. However, the rinse water has suspended
tissue, some blood and other items. When you take
most of the water and grease out, you have a residue
left. It looks like chocolate pudding. The official
name is secondary activated biosolids.
Other items are added to the biosolids to create
the primary compost.
We mix in about the same amount of weight
of ground-up wood material. We put that mixture
into an in-vessel composting system. It is in there
for about three weeks, and then cures about 10

help maintain healthy topsoil in a

sustainable way.
Currently, many resources are
being used faster than they can be
produced by nature. He pointed out that
each year topsoil, the top layer of soil
used for growing plants, is lost through
erosion or changes in land use. That
loss affects how much soil is available
for growing.
The way we manage it is
essential to sustainability, he said.
I recently read a NASA report about
the fall of the Mesopotamian and
Roman civilizations in part because
of resource depletion. We can avoid
topsoil depletion if we manage it in a
sustainable way.
The process of creating the soil
goes on all year, and it is one that
Matuska is proud to be a part of.
It is really a mission-based
organization, he said of the business.
We all have to be smarter about how
we create products and wastes. Then,
we have to be smarter about how we
can recycle waste products, and how
we can avoid resource depletion.

months, he said.
The wood comes from trees that
have been blown down or brush and
wood debris brought to the plant which
is located next to the GNP plant outside
of Cold Spring. The compost is bagged,
or sold in bulk, under the tradename
Soil Essentials Premium Compost.
We also make other products like
our planting mix which is 50 percent
premium compost and 50 percent
soil, said Matuska. Our potting soil,
which is our most popular item, is onethird peat, one-third bark and one-third
poultry compost. There is also some
perlite in it.
Perlite is a mineral that helps
maintain porosity in a potted plant. It is
often mistaken for Styrofoam.
The firm also processes and bags
Composted Manure. The manure
comes from a dairy operation, which
also uses the manure to provide
electricity.
We sell the majority of our
products through distributors who
sell to independent retailers, such
as garden centers, greenhouses and
nurseries across the five state area,
said Matuska. We also sell some
mixes to smaller growers.
He noted that the increased
interest in recent years for organically
grown foods has led to contacts for
their products too. He also values
the opportunity to be a part of the
Minnesota Grown program.
However, what Matuska likes most
about the compost products made by
Mississippi Topsoils is that they help
to replenish the native topsoil. Most
people, he pointed out, are not aware
of how long it takes nature to produce
an inch of topsoil.
It takes about 700 years, he
said. The big thing for us is how to

There are three diseases that we commonly see

in aging cats that can all look very similar. These are
diabetes, hyperthyroidism and chronic kidney failure.
In the early stages of all three diseases, the cat is
usually eating but losing weight
and is drinking more water and
urinating more. To differentiate
between these diseases we need to do
blood work. We are going to discuss
hyperthyroidism in cats and the many
different treatment options that exist.
Cats with hyperthyroidism can live for
years with appropriate treatment.
Hyperthyroidism is a disease
by Wendy
in which excess thyroid hormones Womack, DVM
are secreted. Over 95 percent of cats
diagnosed with hyperthyroidism are greater than 8 years
old though it can be seen as young as 4 years of age. It
is more common in domestic short haired cats (average
cats) than in purebred cats. The excessive thyroid
hormones (which control the bodys rate of metabolism)
are usually produced by a noncancerous growth in one
or both sides of the thyroid gland which is located in
the neck. Rarely, less than two percent of the time, the
condition is due to a cancerous tumor in the thyroid. The
definitive cause is not known.
With their metabolism in overdrive, these cats are
hungry all the time and despite eating aggressively they
lose weight. Previously well-behaved cats may suddenly
start getting in the garbage, cruising the kitchen countertops and following you crying for food. They also drink
more and thus urinate more, so you may notice you are
having to clean the litter-box more frequently or that
the urine clumps in it are larger. They may start having
chronic vomiting or diarrhea and a rougher hair coat.
Some become hyperactive while others become more
lethargic. They might have sudden vision loss due to
retinal damage from the high blood pressure that can
go with this disease. As hyperthyroidism continues

untreated, it causes changes in the heart so that heart

murmurs, heart failure and blood clots can develop.
This condition is usually easily diagnosed with a
blood test evaluating thyroid hormone levels. Thyroid
hormone levels can fluctuate during the course of the
day, so early in the disease process they may move in
and out of the normal range. In this case, if your vet
suspects hyperthyroidism it may take testing more than
once to make the diagnosis. Treating these cats can
unmask underlying issues with kidney function in which
case, the cat needs to be treated for whichever condition
is causing more problems, the hyperthyroidism or the
kidney disease.

There are many ways to treat feline hyperthyroidism.
The safest and most effective treatment, and possible
cure, is treatment with radioactive iodine 131. This
treatment requires about a seven day stay at a special
treatment center, which is set up to deal with the
radioactive materials. There are treatment facilities in
the Twin Cities. The radioactive isotope is given by
injection and is only taken up by the overactive thyroid
tissue, not the rest of the body. There it destroys the
abnormal tissue. Once the overall radioactivity of your
kitty drops to safe levels, it is sent home with some
restrictions for another 10 to 14 days. This is often a
one time treatment that is a cure. There is no anesthesia
required. Only two to four percent of cats will need a
repeat treatment. This is not necessarily a good option
if your kitty has underlying kidney disease, so often
oral medication for hyperthyroidism is given first to
evaluate kidney function once thyroid hormone levels
are brought back to normal before committing to iodine
131 treatment.
Surgery is another treatment option that can be
a cure. The abnormal parts of the thyroid gland are
removed. Once again, it is important to treat with oral
medication for hyperthyroidism before surgery to get
hormone levels back to normal to evaluate kidney
function and to stabilize the heart and blood pressure
prior to anesthesia. There are possible problems with
surgery. Abnormal tissue may be unintentionally left
behind or the important parathyroid glands that live
close to the thyroid gland may be damaged, causing a
problem with the regulation of calcium in the body post
operatively. There are also nerves in the neck that may
be traumatized causing changes in the voice and facial
appearance.
A third treatment is an oral medication, methimazole,
to control the thyroid hormone levels. This is just
management and not a cure. The cat will need this
medication once or twice daily for the rest of their life.
While most cats do great on methimazole, there are some
cats (about 15 percent) that do not tolerate it well. They
can have problems with vomiting, allergic reactions that
cause intense facial itching or liver and bone marrow
problems. Thus, ongoing monitoring is needed with
this medication. It is now possible to compound this
medication into forms that are easier to administer than
pills, such as flavored treats and liquids and transdermal
gels, which are rubbed into the skin on the inside of the
ear.
The final treatment option is to feed a prescription
diet developed by Hills pet food company called YD.
This diet is very iodine restricted, which limits the ability
of the extra thyroid tissue to make excess amounts of
thyroid hormone. This again is management and not a
cure. The cat will need to eat this food exclusively for the
rest of their life. Even a tiny bit of table food or a cat treat
has enough iodine in it to undo the effect of this diet.
You will be instructed on how to store and feed this food
and it usually takes 4 to 12 weeks on the diet for thyroid
hormone levels to return to normal. Cats with concurrent
kidney disease may not be able to be on this diet. YD is
also not appropriate for cats that go outside and hunt.
