MICHAEL
MLLER
MICHAEL MLLER, GOVERNING MAYOR OF BERLIN.

2015 was once again a very good year for Berlin. As in the past years, the economy grew beyond expectations and more
than 40.000 new jobs were created. The attraction of young talents from all over the world is ongoing. Berlin won more than
40.000 new inhabitants, without counting the thousands of refugees finding protection amongst us.

Successful Entrepreneurs:
Time to Talk.

The Berlin startup scene contributes to this positive development more than ever before. It helps present Berlin from its
creative, innovative and attractive side. Surely, it has not been easy for the board of The Hundert to select 100 highlights
out of the many things that happened in 2015. For my part, I had some really good appointments and conversations that
illustrated the impressive development of our startup scene, for example while attending the opening of Ciscos innovation
center, or while visiting Zalando or the heating installation company Thermondo. My highlight? I am very happy that we
recently passed a Digital Agenda for Berlin with ten concrete projects.
For 2016, I am wishing you, your team and your ventures all the best, together with good ideas, a dynamic growth, and
another 100 personal highlights. Let us continue pursuing our common goal of promoting the Berlin startup metropolis.

THE POWER
OF TV

THE PERFECT AD
OPENER

BRANDING & STORYTELLING

CALL TO ACTION

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT

For the simple reason that televisions ability to get the same
message to a wide audience, in a short space of time, makes
it an unbeatable ally for those needing to advertise. Besides,
everything goes in TV: From branding to sales. The more
a product or service may appeal to masses, the greater the
need for television. Using the media for these purposes is an
effective and efficient way to apply Drive to store marketing
tools. Last but not least, viewers grant brands publicized in TV
a higher degree of seriousness and trust.
WHEN IS A STARTUP READY FOR TV?
We use a small checklist for this: The business model has
developed well, there is a Proof of Concept. The organization
is effective and there is a good management team. Just as
important, the technology is well-developed and resilient.
When the server suddenly receives thousands of requests
after the ad has been broadcast, it must not crash otherwise
those contacts would be lost. Also, when orders are placed, a
fast processing and delivery must be ensured.
HOW CAN YOU BEST CONVINCE STARTUPS TO USE
TV PUBLICITY?
We strongly believe that when you use TV as a marketing
channel thus achieving a real increase in communication
coverage you attract new consumers that would be difficult,
or even impossible, to reach by other means. TV also builds a
branding effect that results in a positive virtual cycle.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR STARTUPS ON
THEIR WAY TO USING THE TV MEDIUM?
They have to learn how to walk anew, in order to feel as sure

Here is a storyboard that, in my opinion, presents a very good mixture for startups:

WHICH PREJUDICES DO YOU FACE?

If your brand is not well-known yet, it makes sense to open with the URL name and your main message.
This is ideally followed by the branding part in which a story is told appealing to viewers emotions, thus
capturing them.

TV publicity is too expensive for us that is what I hear more

often and am most eager to refute: It seems expensive at first
because prices for TV ads are determined by the reach of the
broadcasted programme, and on RTL TV in prime time you
can quickly reach several million viewers. TV might seem
expensive initially but you need to consider both the cost and
the challenges involved in reaching a million contacts online.

At the end of the spot, it is important to make a clear call to action. The URL should be readable throughout all
of the ad to increase marketing memory, particularly in the case of imaginary names.
Creating the mixture will be a real challenge but this can be overcome by testing the ad before starting the
campaign. Also, tracking during the campaign gives you a good idea about its quality.

WHAT IS NECESSARY TO MAKE SUCCESSFUL TV PUBLICITY?

Ute Henzgen
If the commercial contains the right blend of branding and
activation, it can reach any objective, from image creation to
sales and all at the same time. If, on top, it is a very well-made
commercial then there is a very strong likelihood that it will
impress the consumers heart and mind permanently!

B+D

MS. HENZGEN, WHY SHOULD A STARTUP ADVERTISE

ON TELEVISION?

about their perspectives using the TV medium as they were in

online marketing.

CAN SUCCESS BE MEASURED IN TV AS EASILY AS ONLINE?

Viewers activation can be measured immediately by looking at
the increase in the startups website traffic. Long term impact
can be measured with the right research partner.
TV cannot identify the ultimate end user in the same way as
online, but this misses the point of TV advertising. TV is about
scale: high reach and frequency of the commercial ensure
much wider coverage and brand building. At the end of the day
it is about getting a strong message out into the market and in
front of potential purchasers, and TV is unique on this front.
CONCRETELY, HOW DOES THE COLLABORATION WITH IP
DEUTSCHLAND WORK?
In our Media for Revenue Share- model, we have, from the
outset, a joint goal that we want to reach together as partners:
We provide the platform and assist in campaign planning
sometimes even in creating adverts. The startups task is to
ensure a perfect offer that includes the optimization of websites
and of performance marketing.
SO WHY WOULD THIS PROCEDURE MAKE SENSE TO YOU
AS MARKETER, MS. HENZGEN?
Quite easy: Effective publicity leads to revenues...and, in this
model, we are just as interested in obtaining these as the
startup itself!

WITH THE RIGHT FUEL

No other medium is as powerful as TV.
We provide just the right environment for young
brands with plenty of drive and even more expertise.

THE BIG
B-QUESTIONS
IS IT A BUBBLE?
WILL IT BURST?
MARIUS STERNBERG, AUDIT PARTNER AT KPMG AND CO-FOUNDER OF SMART START KPMGS INITIATIVE ON

DISCUSSED THEIR VIEWS ON THE CURRENT TECH-MARKET SITUATION.

THE HUNDERT // ADVERTORIAL

ABOUT ACXIT CAPITAL PARTNERS

2015. It was the year, in which Berlin attracted more capital
growth in the tech-market than London for the first time.
It was also the year showing a soaring number of unicorns
globally.1 The tech-market is in a bullish mood. However, voices
raising the infamous B-questions are on the rise as well.
The tech industry is in denial, but the bubble is about to burst
headlined TechCrunch in June 2015.2 Marc Andreessen gave an
18-Tweet lection3 ending with 18: Worry in late September.
Do we have to be concerned about a tech-bubble?
MARIUS STERNBERG: In recent times, there are more and
more debates about the B-question in the press and especially
on tech blogs. Doubtless, there is a lot of money pumped into
the tech-market, as it promises high yields, while interest rates
are at their all-time low. As an expert in Corporate Finance
focused on the technology sector, do you see further signs for
a tech-bubble?
DANIEL SCHENK: That is exactly what we are seeing, or to
re-phrase a peak in valuations, this is indicated mainly by
two characteristics: First, main street and a large number of
institutional investors discovered the tech-market as a highyield investment opportunity especially in the pre-IPO stage.
However, a constant search for the next big thing at an early
stage bears the risk that business models may not be adequately
challenged regarding monetization and/or marketability

potential. Liquidity is poured into the asset class (and yes,

VC/tech/growth commands only a small portion of the entire
multi-trillion PE money sitting around). Second, we saw a new
high of tech IPOs in the last years. The fact that many of these
underlying businesses still classify as venture businesses indicates
that classic venture capital risks (not profitable, not cash flow
positive, no real monetization model yet) are increasingly being
shifted to the public market. This also happened in the early 2000s
and as we know, the public market was not prepared to deal with
those risks properly.
MARIUS STERNBERG: It seems that the signs for an overheated
market are clearly visible. Logically, this would lead to an overall
correction of market valuations at some point. However, based
on the industry insights that we gained during the last years
through our startup initiative, we do not expect a bursting bubble
that only leaves dust like at the beginning of the millennium.
Rather staying at a metaphorical level here we see it more
as a ball which is going to be corrected in size and density.
When it is deprived of hot air, a compressed but strong core
will emerge from it.
DANIEL SCHENK: I agree. Instead of a bursting bubble we expect
a phase of correction of valuation. The reason behind this is:
Unlike the early 2000s, tech companies today are managed
better, have often real business models, and most importantly,

ACXIT Capital Partners is a leading international

corporate finance and investment advisory firm for
mid-market clients and entrepreneurs in Europe and
abroad. Since 1998, we offer our clients comprehensive
corporate finance advisory services including M&A,
capital markets as well as restructuring and strategic

India and USA. Until today, we have completed almost
300 transactions with a total deal/financing volume of
approx. EUR 15bn. Our clients are corporations, familyowned businesses and entrepreneurs, financial sponsors
and family offices. While our home market is in the
German speaking region, most clients are international
and transactions cross-border.

products with real use-cases. This creates customer value, and

therefore, a strong demand. This demand is not going to vanish.
The same applies to digitalization in general: It came to stay.
That is the good side of the story, but as you correctly mention,
the hot air is going to be constrained. For this reason, a correction
of the market valuations is to be expected in order to receive
more sustainable valuation. This is where the wheat is going to be
separated from the chaff. Business models which are not scalable
will be hit the hardest and may even vanish completely.
MARIUS STERNBERG: As Europe is still very dependent on
international investors, there is a risk that as soon as the
correction starts those international investors will concentrate
on their domestic markets and withdraw money from overseas
markets like Europe. What would you recommend to a young
entrepreneur in this situation?

ABOUT KPMG & SMART START

DANIEL SCHENK: In these days, take the chance of a great
valuation environment and get as much money as you can.
It will not last (and there will be lots of bumps on the road to the
next upcycle). Or, if you are exit ready (or close to), test the waters
and check if you can get a strong valuation today, and sell it. Then
go and think about your next ideas. Money is not going to be as
available as it is now when the cycle turns, and I feel that we are
approaching the peak rather than the beginning.

KPMG is a network of professional firms with

more than 162,000 employees in 155 countries.
In Germany, KPMG is one of the leading auditing and
advisory firms and has around 9,600 employees at over
20 locations. KPMGs Smart Start Team has set itself the
task of supporting entrepreneurs of high-tech growth
companies in getting their businesses up and running.
We know the typical challenges that arise at any point
in the life-cycle of a startup. Regardless of whether you

investors or already enjoying your first sales, our team

FinTech may be a buzzword these days, but it certainly is living up

The company builder expanded into Switzerland this year under the

process. Together with its new associate,
ClimatePartner, LASERLINE is a totally climate neutral company since 2015. All unavoidable carbon emissions are counted and

In addition to the carbon emissions produced by server use and website maintenance,
those caused by visits to the website are

Social engagement was a major issue again for LASERLINE in 2015. In

cooperation with Refugee Guide Initiative, a comprehensive guide for
refugees was produced and distributed 10,000 times to volunteer initiatives in all of Germany. LASERLINE also distributed its own idea of
coloring books to learn the alphabet in a playful manner 2,500 copies to
non-profit organizations. As every year, LASERLINE provided support to
School for Life, meant to help disadvantaged children in Thailand, with
publications such as the pro bono picture calendar. Further, LASERLINE

Stronger network on site

As a founding member of the Berlin Entrepreneurship Network of Institutes of
Higher Learning and Companies (BENHU),
LASERLINE wants to reinforce Berlins position as a start-up and innovation site
through the establishment of a common
network of higher learning institutes and
companies. The midsize industrial concern
has clearly placed the focus on technical innovation as well as innovation in the fields
of development of business models and
strategy (Corporate Entrepreneurship).

During the Recycling Weeks from

April 16 to June 28, 2015, LASERLINE OnlineShop clients were
able to get a tree planted for
every printing job commissioned
on recycling paper. The result:
2.000 tree saplings were handed
in at the end of June following
the initiative of PlantATree.org.
Dedicated LASERLINE employees
helped to plant the new trees in
Southeast Berlin. The action was
broadened and clients are still
able to decide, when placing an
order, whether they want to plant
a tree. LASERLINE has planted
more than 6,000 trees thanks to
its clients.

Our highlights in 2015:

120l/cm screen brings higher brilliance to offset printing

One of the first printing houses to have an OnlineShop, LASERLINE has adjusted its complete offset printing portfolio to the use of 120l/cm screens
in order to reach higher standards of print brilliance. The 120l/cm screen
produces a noticeably better print quality with a substantially higher resolution of details, thus allowing for a photo-realistic rendering of the print
motifs and higher edge definition in rasterized fonts.

Politicians visit environmental pioneer

A visit to the Humboldthain Technology Park (TPH), the creative
home to institutes of higher learning, industry and the start-up
scene, convinced Ramona Pop from the Green Party (Bndnis
90/Die Grnen) and other politicians of the innovative power
found in the middle of Berlin. Visiting the LASERLINE printing
center was a must, since the neighboring company is strongly
committed in TPH and is also exemplary in innovation and climate protection due to its carbon neutral products and processes.

Special ideas require special solutions: When the publisher of The

Hundert started planning a Fashion Week issue that brought together 100 Berlin start-ups and fashion designers for the first time,
there was a need for specific graphic arts. LASERLINEs specialty is
the accomplishment of the individual wishes of its clients and had the
concept The Hundert needed: 10,000 issues were published with 100
different covers. 100 by 100 examples of creativity in the capital city.

MOVAGO

TWO MOVING SERVICE OPERATORS

MOVINGA

COMPETE IN THE GERMAN CAPITAL

Movago raised 7 million in a Series A round in
November, and Movinga 6 million several months
prior. While Movinga has financial backing from
German powerhouse of Rocket Internet, Movago
has enjoyed an impressive growth trajectory since
its launch in August, facilitating nearly 2,000 moves
in three months. Time will tell which company
proves to be the better business model!

carmenkrueger.de

The rise of Movinga and Movago, two Berlinbased online moving operators, will make
it easier to find affordable movers in the
capital. Both companies operate with similar
monikers, designs, and slogans raising the
question: who copied whom? While we may
never know, the important thing is that both
raised money this year.

When TechBerlin founder Niko Woischnik started his

humble Tumblr account in 2010, he never had the goal
of personal success. His blog, chronicling the Berlin
startup scene in English, had rather the intention of
connecting with others and building up community.
Fast forward to now, and those early efforts are being
transformed; TechBerlin is re-launching as a new and
improved platform with the backing of IBM and the City
of Berlin. The site features tech stories, events, jobs,
interviews, and plenty more on the Berlin community.

Every startup community needs a little reality check now and then. In their
2015 study, Deutscher Startup Monitor,
represented by Florian Nll and Sven
Ripsas, aimed to show all angles of
Berlins startup scene through facts
and figures. Their thorough presentation deck began with a clear message: Germany needs to understand
startups. The report, published i.a. by
the German Startups Association and
KPMG, delivered statistics on challenges and successes and touched on
founder culture, financing and plenty
more. One result, for example, is that
startup founders are generally happier
than salaried employees!

Freie Universitt Berlin announced this year that it will open a new incubator for
students, academics and FU alumni. ProFund Innovation XL will be available
up to 5 years. It will house 11 founding teams that work on their ideas for
1 year and enjoy the benefits of outstanding mentors from the business and
academic communities. Participating teams can enter the program at any
time. The link between entrepreneurship and academic is definitely one worth
strengthening.

THANK YOU!

OUR MEDIA PARTNERS:

What a heck of a ride

This issue of the Hundert was even though totally amazing really an unexpected challenge. Blood, sweat and tears accompanied us on
a daily basis. We should call it the rollercoaster issue. Everything was different than before. It was our first totally international project. Also,
it was the first issue without photographers.
Therefore, we do not want forget to say a big thank you to the many people who helped us and stood by our side during the entire process.
First of all, our incredible illustrators: Pawel Piechnik, Aky Anyme, W_Flemming, Svetik Petushkova, Daniel Caballero, Carmen Krger, and
Paul Loboda, who spent many hours turning our ideas into lively artworks. Thanks to all of you for your engagement and your patience. You
are the true heroes of this edition of the Hundert. Also, thanks to Marek Oleksicki, who could only draw one illustration and then had to leave
the project, unfortunately.
The great author of almost all the story texts in this issue is Julia Neuman, who did it with passion and a lightweight pen. Great to have you on
board. Again, big hugs to our friend Hilda Ortiz for proofreading the magazine, doing translations and always being positive.
Our most sincere thanks also to Balzs Tarsoly and his team from Operation Butterfly for this wonderful collaboration and the brilliant design.
Without you the Hundert just would not exist. It is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with you guys! In particular, we want to
express our thanks to Natascha Ungereit who directed the graphical realization of the project with great responsibility. Natascha, this issue
bears your signature, your soul and your rhythm. You did an amazing job! Also big thanks to Johnnie Clapper for technical support, Riccardo
Volpato for this great (and very different) cover, Bianca Moschkowski and Dominik Pfaff for the drawings and help a big high five to all of you!
The same goes for Steffen Setzer, Manuela Wachs and Maria Giese from our printing partner Laserline for the reliable cooperation and for being
open to all our ideas. Thanks for all the support. With a view on our cover, we could state: The future is golden.
We also would like to thank the international experts for their highlights from other startup ecosystems: Christian Dorffer (London), Roxanne
Varza (Paris), Don Ritzen (Amsterdam), Artur Kurasinski (Warsaw), Rune Gregers Meyer (Copenhagen), Niamh Bushnell (Dublin), Claus Rosenberg Gotthard (Madrid), Joseph Michael (Stockholm), Inka Mero (Helsinki), Zoltn cs (Budapest), Felix Petersen (Lisbon), Gal Menaged (Tel

been able to realize the Hundert. For this issue, we would like especially to point out: Tim Dmichen, Marius Sternberg, Julia Linhart from
KPMG; Klaus Siegers, Luzi Teber and Maike Valentin from Weberbank; Olaf Nissler, Lena Dinter, Ignatz Schatz from SAP; Tanja Mhlhans from
