MICHAEL
MLLER
MICHAEL MLLER, GOVERNING MAYOR OF BERLIN.
2015 was once again a very good year for Berlin. As in the past years, the economy grew beyond expectations and more
than 40.000 new jobs were created. The attraction of young talents from all over the world is ongoing. Berlin won more than
40.000 new inhabitants, without counting the thousands of refugees finding protection amongst us.
The Berlin startup scene contributes to this positive development more than ever before. It helps present Berlin from its
creative, innovative and attractive side. Surely, it has not been easy for the board of The Hundert to select 100 highlights
out of the many things that happened in 2015. For my part, I had some really good appointments and conversations that
illustrated the impressive development of our startup scene, for example while attending the opening of Ciscos innovation
center, or while visiting Zalando or the heating installation company Thermondo. My highlight? I am very happy that we
recently passed a Digital Agenda for Berlin with ten concrete projects.
For 2016, I am wishing you, your team and your ventures all the best, together with good ideas, a dynamic growth, and
another 100 personal highlights. Let us continue pursuing our common goal of promoting the Berlin startup metropolis.

THE POWER
OF TV
THE PERFECT AD
OPENER
CALL TO ACTION
For the simple reason that televisions ability to get the same
message to a wide audience, in a short space of time, makes
it an unbeatable ally for those needing to advertise. Besides,
everything goes in TV: From branding to sales. The more
a product or service may appeal to masses, the greater the
need for television. Using the media for these purposes is an
effective and efficient way to apply Drive to store marketing
tools. Last but not least, viewers grant brands publicized in TV
a higher degree of seriousness and trust.
WHEN IS A STARTUP READY FOR TV?
We use a small checklist for this: The business model has
developed well, there is a Proof of Concept. The organization
is effective and there is a good management team. Just as
important, the technology is well-developed and resilient.
When the server suddenly receives thousands of requests
after the ad has been broadcast, it must not crash otherwise
those contacts would be lost. Also, when orders are placed, a
fast processing and delivery must be ensured.
HOW CAN YOU BEST CONVINCE STARTUPS TO USE
TV PUBLICITY?
We strongly believe that when you use TV as a marketing
channel thus achieving a real increase in communication
coverage you attract new consumers that would be difficult,
or even impossible, to reach by other means. TV also builds a
branding effect that results in a positive virtual cycle.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR STARTUPS ON
THEIR WAY TO USING THE TV MEDIUM?
They have to learn how to walk anew, in order to feel as sure
Here is a storyboard that, in my opinion, presents a very good mixture for startups:
If your brand is not well-known yet, it makes sense to open with the URL name and your main message.
This is ideally followed by the branding part in which a story is told appealing to viewers emotions, thus
capturing them.
At the end of the spot, it is important to make a clear call to action. The URL should be readable throughout all
of the ad to increase marketing memory, particularly in the case of imaginary names.
Creating the mixture will be a real challenge but this can be overcome by testing the ad before starting the
campaign. Also, tracking during the campaign gives you a good idea about its quality.

Txtrs future is not looking bright. The Berlin-based company, which was founded seven years ago, filed for bankruptcy at
the start of 2015. CEO Christopher Maire and the rest of the Txtr team made a great run, having forged a major partnership

Europes fastest growing real-time reservation platform for restaurants, Quandoo, was acquired by Japanese
company Recruit Holdings for a whopping 198.6 million. Recruit had already strategically invested in Quandoo
at the end of last year, but the HR company scored the remaining 92.91% in 2015 giving it 100% ownership.
This satisfied the companys long term vision to become the number one group in global matching. Quandoo
is used by over 6,000 restaurants in Singapore, South Africa and Lebanon, as well as 10 countries in Europe.

Rocket Internet invested 287 million Euros in Delivery Hero and bought shares of equal value
from existing investors. Overall, Rocket acquired 30 percent of the startup, which allows Delivery
Heros hunger for world domination to grow year after year. 2015 saw the companys largest
acquisition yet: Turkeys Yemeksepeti, a food delivery service valued at $589 million. Yemeksepeti
founder Nevzat Aydin now joins the Delivery Hero team to continue conquering markets alongside
CEO Niklas stberg, who commented after the deal: We have looked at many businesses in our
industry around the world but we have rarely seen KPIs as exceptional as those displayed by
Yemeksepeti...It is an extraordinary company, and I cant express enough of my excitement that
they will join the Delivery Hero family. This huge move reaffirmed Delivery Hero as the global
market leader in food delivery. The skys the limit for this young company!

The bank is primarily focused on the financial objectives of
entrepreneurs in their private sphere. Only those who have
made robust private plans and obtained the corresponding level
of security can act freely in the world of business, equipped to
face all possible risks. It is necessary to consider many individual
facts, from the amount of available resources to general stage
of life, family background, career plans and so on. After all,
those who dare do not always win. There are varying factors
that connect the private and professional spheres. Therefore,
tailored solutions are important and will always provide the
best results for clients. Keywords in this context include, for
example, the legal form of the company, a testament or will and
powers of attorney to exercise ownership rights in case of illness.
Weberbank offers support and advice in a wide range of these
and many other important fields.

Uber cannot catch a break in Germany but then again, neither can taxi drivers! The globally popular rideshare
app has been battling it out with existing laws and got slammed this year when the Taxi Association of Frankfurt
filed a lawsuit against the company because of their service uberPOP. After months of discussions the service,
using private individuals as drivers, was banned by law and will most likely not be introduced to the European
market again. Germans can still make use of Ubers professional driving services such as uberX, uberTAXI and
maybe soon the new uberPool.

The ever-so-opinionated debate magazine The European landed in good hands in August when Weimer Media
Group purchased its title, print assets, and web portal from Brsenmedien AG, Kulmbach, whose Founder and
CEO is Bernd Frtsch. Since its establishment in 2009, The European has hosted plenty of outstanding voices
in politics, business, culture and science; it remains in the hands of Founder and Editor-in-Chief Alex Grlach,
who maintains it as a free space for healthy debate in Germany. It is not surprising that publisher Wolfram
Weimer wanted a piece of The European pie!
HELPING TO END
WORLD HUNGER
IN JUST TWO
CLICKS
There are over 2 billion smartphone users and 100 million starving
children worldwide. So why not create an app that can help end
hunger in our world? ShareTheMeal, founded by Sebastian Stricker
and Bernhard Kowatsch in cooperation with the United Nations World
Food Programme, did just that. And they certainly created a viral hit:
Within less than 5 weeks, 100,000 users shared over 1 million meals via
the app. Each donation of 40 cents helps to feed 1 child for 1 day in Lesotho.
It is easy to support this noble cause just download the ShareTheMeal app!

No territory is forbidden for the bold crew at Jobspotting. Having previously raised a 500,000 seed round from
Axel Springer Plug and Play and angel investors, the company forged ahead in 2015 and convinced Asias richest man,
Li Ka-shing, to back them for a seed round. Ka-shings VC firm, Horizons Ventures, delivered an undisclosed amount
to Jobspotting a deal that COO Robin Haak described as very fair. The Berlin-Hong Kong connection
got a little bit stronger, and the job discovery apps future a lot brighter.

secured a $77 million round from Londons Market Tech. It was the first time Glispa raised
any money. Lin did not want just any old financial loan after all, the company was profitable
on its own. Rather, this investment doubled as a strategic partnership and brought plenty
to the table for potential expansion and acquisitions.

Every startup community needs a little reality check now and then. In their
2015 study, Deutscher Startup Monitor,
represented by Florian Nll and Sven
Ripsas, aimed to show all angles of
Berlins startup scene through facts
and figures. Their thorough presentation deck began with a clear message: Germany needs to understand
startups. The report, published i.a. by
the German Startups Association and
KPMG, delivered statistics on challenges and successes and touched on
founder culture, financing and plenty
more. One result, for example, is that
startup founders are generally happier
than salaried employees!
