Specific Criteria and Feedback Comments

Analyse issues, values and evidence linked to a theme or project

Comments:

You have identified a relevant focus for your enquiry and show a very good appreciation of the
political context and the concepts that underpin some of the emerging discourses. You pose
pertinent questions and are engaging with a variety of perspectives, recognising some of the
tensions in the rhetoric of resilience. Occasionally there are non-sequiturs where one point is
not clearly linked to the last for example when you move from Duits views of resilience to the
coproduction of plans or from Escobar to social capital; for the final report you should make sure
the organisation of this material is effective in making your questions and concerns clear at the
outset. You have collected a range of relevant material but your own line of argument is a bit
obscure. Be wary of deconstructing a term like resilience and then using it as part of your own
objective.
C2

Review relevant literature critically and show the impact on the proposed x
project
Comments:

It is evident that you are identifying a range of very relevant reading, focussing on the key
concepts that are drawn upon in government discourses and acknowledging that the specific
instance of flooding is not in itself the main issue. You are reading critically and this is helping
you pose important questions which you will be able to interrogate your data with. Ads you
suggest, this reading will be ongoing as your enquiry progresses.
C3

Understand research methodologies and methods and the link to practice

Comments:

You discuss methodology after you have outlined your method. It is more helpful if these are
presented in the other order. Appropriate methods flow from your methodology. You
reasoning for an interpretivist stance is sound but I am not so convinced that your methods are
fully participatory. Have a look at the guidelines for Participatory Research that I posted and
consider to what extent people will be involved in YOUR enquiry or participating in a shared
enquiry. My feeling is that this is your interest and you are drawing upon others experience for
your insights which might then inform wider practice. In the ethics section you mention
approaching the research as an observer. I am not sure what you mean by this; more
explanation is required especially as there may be professional sensitivities given your role in
the communities.
Methodology needs a little more consideration and discussion with your enquiry tutor.

C4

Plan and design an enquiry project

x
Comments:

It is evident that you have considered who you will explore the issues with and how. I would
have liked a little more detail in the planning for example how many interviews/focus groups
are you aiming for? Also some consideration of the challenges of interviews and focus groups.
A detailed plan of what who when would be useful to you to check that your plan is realistic in
the timescales. Your ethics statement shows that you have considered ethics and sensitivities
in the enquiry ad have consulted with appropriate authorities.

General Comments on this Course Submission

You have identified a very interesting and relevant focus for your enquiry and demonstrate that you have
a very good understanding of some of the local issues as well as the wider political context. For the final
report some of your material might be reorganised to make your own thoughts clearer but overall, you
are approaching the enquiry critically and with an appreciation of alternative perspectives.

Comments on Student Next Steps Statement from Previous Course

There is a clear development of your engagement with alternative perspectives, Dawn, and the
examination of different kinds of assumptions in key concepts such as community, resilience, social
capital. Try to keep this criticality throughout the enquiry process.
3

Next Steps
(Please remember to cut and paste these next steps and associated action into the front cover
accompanying the submission of your next course assignment).

reading in relation to these that will support you throughout. Make a clear plan of what you will do when,
with whom.
