Academic overview
Learning outcomes
The learning goals associated with this unit are to:
1. analyse characteristics of international banking and consider the rational of domestic
banks to expand overseas by researching and applying topics that are generally outside the
typical finance undergraduate curriculum
2. develop an understanding of the financial structure of countries and apply that
understanding to a particular country to report potential international banking opportunities
based on a country's current financial structure
3. research, evaluate and report on a current international banking issue
4. demonstrate an awareness of the complex and changing nature of Euro zone banking
5. apply critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills to individual and/or group
activities dealing with international banking and finance and demonstrate in an individual
summative assessment task the acquisition of comprehensive understanding of the topics
covered by BFF5916.

Teaching approach
5
BFF5916 International banking - Semester 2 - 2016

The teaching and learning approach provides facilitated learning, practical exploration and peer
learning.
This unit will be taught as a three hour lecture/discussion with the first part based on a lecture and
the second part based on discussions. Given our class size we have the opportunity to have
students to ask questions and participate in discussions which can develop a students confidence
and oral presentation skills.
The lecture notes will be provided on Moodle as will a number of readings on each topic. Please
do not underestimate the amount of reading this unit will require. This unit has no prerequisites,
which allows students with a non-financial backgrounds to undertake the unit, making the required
reading all the more essential . The global finance/banking topic coverage will alsobe of
considerable interest to those with finance skills.
To ensure a high probability of successfully completing this unit, you need to manage your time
and studies in a systematic way. At a minimum this should involve:

reading prescribed and selected recommended material prior to attending lectures;

completing week-by-week tutorial activities tasks prior to attending tutorials;
attempting relevant questions from past final examination papers and in-semester tests;
discussions with past and present students; and
revision of the semester's work during the SWOT-Vac and prior to the final examination.

To be advised

A students final mark is normally the sum of the marks obtained in all of the individual assessment
items in the unit.

Second marking
Where an assessment task is given a fail grade by an examiner, that piece of work will be marked
again by a second examiner who will independently evaluate the work, and consult with the first
marker. No student will be awarded a fail grade for an assessment task or unit without a second
examiner confirming the result.
Note: Exceptions to this are individual pieces of assessment contributing 10% or less of the final
mark, unless the total of such pieces exceeds 30% of the final mark.

Return of final marks

Faculty policy states that 'the final mark that a student receives for a unit will be determined by the
Board of Examiners on the recommendation of the Chief Examiner taking into account all aspects
of assessment'.
The final mark for this unit will be released by the Board of Examiners on the date nominated in the
Faculty Calendar. Student results will be accessible through the my.monash portal.

Exam viewing

required. The feedback should be in accordance with the University's procedures on Unit
Assessment. Details of the examination script viewing arrangements set down by the Faculty of
Business and Economics are available athttp://www.buseco.monash.edu.au/esg/agu/policies
