Front-End Isolated Quasi-Z-Source DC-DC

Converter Modules in Series for Photovoltaic
High-Voltage DC Applications
Introduction:
The ever-increasing installed capacity of the large-scale
photovoltaic (PV) power plant, ranging from few hundreds of kilowatts
up to several hundreds of megawatts, is in consequence of the rapid
growing demand for sustainable energy, the market competition, and the
ability of reducing the cost per watt ratio, etc.

Existing system:
The quasi-Z source (qZS) cascaded multilevel inverter (CMI)
(qZS-CMI) presents attractive advantages in application to photovoltaic
(PV) power system. Each PV panel connects to an H-bridge qZS
inverter (qZSI) to form a power generation module. The distributed
maximum power point tracking and all modules dc-link peak voltage
balance can be achieved. However, it is the same with the conventional
CMI that the second-harmonic (2) voltage and current ripples exist in
each qZSI module. It is crucial for a qZS-CMI to design the reasonable
qZS network parameters to limit the ripples within a desired range.

Drawbacks:

A passive way utilized the qZS inductance and capacitance to

buffer the DLF ripple within the engineering tolerant range, but the

resultant large impedance values brought in obstacles to the highpower implementation of qZS-CMI PV system.
A large PV terminal capacitance was applied to prevent the ripple
power from propagating to the PV panel.
Elaborate controls were explored to minimize the qZS network,
leading to complicated control design.
An active power filter integrated single-phase qZSI stored the dcside DLF ripple in APFs LC branch by means of ac, but will
greatly increase complexity and component counts in building the
qZS-CMI.

Proposed system:
A qZS modular cascaded converter (qZS-MCC) for HV dc
applications of PV systems. The qZS-MCC is a series connection of
frontend isolated qZS-HB dc-dc converter SMs. By inserting shootthrough events into the post-stage HB dc-dc converter to balance dc-link
voltages and distribute powers with the modulation index, the qZS HB
SM no longer desires the extra shoot-through comparison as that in the
qZSI or backend isolated qZS dc-dc converter, and a unified duty cycle
without control is executable for all front-end isolation converters.
