INTRODUCTION

In1983,ACESlauncheditsservicesasageotechnicalinvestigationandmaterialstestingengi
neering organization. Today, through a network of 17 offices in the Middle East, ACES provides a
completerangeofspecializedserviceswhichincludeadditionally,qualitycontrolofprojects,landand
marine surveying, geophysical studies, pile testing and instrumentation, pavement studies and
evaluation,andenvironmentalstudiesandtesting.
ACESisproudtopresentitsstateoftheartenvironmentaltestinglaboratoryinACESDoha.Withits
advancedmonitoringandtestingequipmentandhighlyqualifiedstaff,ACESDohaisnowwellposi
tionedamongtheleadersintheareaofenvironmentalservicesintheregion.
Weofferourclientsadiversifiedmenuofenvironmentaltestingcapabilitiestomeettheirmostde

Principle
Measure the intensity of light passing
through the sample. The amount of light
absorptionisdependentontheconcentra

Purpose:
Determinationofionsorcompounds,
whicharecoloredorcapabletoproduce
coloredreactionproducts.

Nitrogen Determination
Principle
In the presence of H2SO4,potassium sulfate
(K2SO4), and cupric sulfate (CuSO4) catalyst,
aminonitrogenofmanyorganicmaterialsis
convertedtoammonium.Freeammoniaalso
isconvertedtoammonium.Afteradditionof
base, the ammonia is distilled from an alka
line medium andabsorbedinboricor sulfu
ricacid.Theammoniamaybedeterminedby
titrationwiththestandardmineralacid.

Purpose:
Determination of Kjeldahl nitrogen, ammo
nia nitrogen and organic nitrogen in water
andsoil.

Spark Emission Spectrometry

Principle
An electric arc or spark is passed through the
sample, heating it to a high temperature to

that can be dispersed with a monochromator
anddetected.
Purpose:
Used for the analysis of metallic elements in
solidsamples(steel&alloys).

Gas ChromatographyMass
Spectrometry (GCMS)
Principle
Methodthatcombinesthefeaturesofgasliquid
chromatographyandmassspectrometrytoidentify
differentsubstancewithinthetestsample.
A gas chromatography uses a thin capillary fiber
knownasthecolumn,throughwhichdifferentchemi
calconstituentsofasamplepassesinagasstreamat
different rates depending on their various chemical
and physical properties and their interaction with a
specific capillary column. As the chemicals exit the
end of the column, they are detected and identified
electronically.
The Mass Spectrometry principle consists of ionizing
chemicalcompoundsto generate chargedmolecules
ormoleculefragmentsandmeasurementoftheirmasstochargeratios.

Purpose:
Usedfortheanalysisofmainlyorganiccompoundsofenvironmentalsamples.

Gas ChromatographyFID Detector

Principle
FID(FlameIonizationDetector)Asmall
hydrogenairflameisusedtopyrolyseorganic
compounds to yield positively charged ions
and electrons and the current generated is
measuredandcomputedgraphically.
Purpose:
Mainly used for analysis of hydrocarbons
(TPHasperUSEPA8015D).

Uses Defined Substrate Technology (DST) nutrient indicators to detect various microorgan

Purpose:
