Problem Set # 3

Name: __________________________________
Student No.: _____________________________
Situation I. A rectangular dam having a width of 14.8 m has a height of 23.3 m. The depth of the water on
one side of the dam is 20.4 m. If the coefficient of friction between the dam and the foundation is 0.85,
1. Compute the hydrostatic force acting on the wall.
2. Compute for the factor of safety for sliding if the density of concrete is 2310 kg/m3.
3. Compute for the factor of safety against overturning.

Situation II. A dam 4.0 m on top 18.0 m at the bottom and 25 m high has water 20 m deep acting on its
vertical sides.
4. Compute the location of the vertical resultant force from the toe.
5. Compute the factor of safety against overturning.
6. What is the stress at the heel if the density of concrete is 2200 kg/m3.

Situation III. A trapezoidal masonry dam with vertical upstream face is 6 m high, 0.6 m at the top and 3 m
wide at the bottom. Use unit weight of concrete as 23.5 KN/m3.
7. Find the depth of water on the vertical upstream face if the pressure at the toe is twice the average
pressure at the base.
8. Using the computed depth of water, compute the hydrostatic uplift force if the uplift varies from full
hydrostatic pressure at the heel to zero at toe.
9. Compute the factor of safety against sliding if the coefficient of friction on the base is equal to 0.80.
Consider the hydrostatic uplift.

Situation IV. An open tank 3 m by 3m in horizontal section weighs 3.6 KN and contains water to a depth of
1.0 m. It is acted by an unbalanced force of 16 KN parallel to a pair of sides.
10. Determine the acceleration of the tank.
11. What must be the height of the tank so that no water will be spilled out?
12. If the acceleration is increased by 4.00 m/s2, how much water will be spilled out?

Situation V. A container holding water at a depth of 300 mm has a cross-section of a trapezoid with 1,200
mm
13. At what angle will the angle will the water surface make with the horizontal when the tank is
accelerated to the right so that no water will be spilled out?
14. Determine the acceleration of the tank to the right at this instant.
15. What is the maximum pressure of the tank at this instant?

Situation VI. A cylindrical tank 4 m in diameter and 6 m high is filled with water. It is tilted to a position
enough for the water surface to cut the diameter of the base.
16. How much of the water is retained in the tank?
17. If the tank is placed in a vertical upright position, how deep is the water in the tank?
18. How fast in rpm could the tank be rotated about its vertical axis so that the depth of the water at the
center is zero?

Situation VII. An open cylindrical tank one meter in diameter and 2.5 m high is 3/5 full of water. If the tank
is rotated about its vertical axis, what speed should it have in rpm so that:
19. The water just reach the rim of the tank.
20. The depth of water at the center is zero.
21. There is no water at the bottom within 20 cm from the vertical axis.
