Notes (key concepts, direct quotes, etc.)

I Say
My notes, commentary

Personally Responsible
-Being a good citizen:
-law abiding and knowledgeable
or
-well informed, active and understanding
- knowledgeable, informed voters who attend to
current events
Participatory
-Being a good citizen:
-awareness of diversity and inequity in the larger
culture
-not just a US citizen, but a world citizen.. make the
world a better place
-use knowledge to motivate action

-reminded me of most of my social studies teachers in

school.
-giving students all the tools/knowledge and then holding
them responsible to go out and use it
-for example.. it matters most why you voted that way
then it is who you voted for
-I felt like this group was the most philosophical of them
all.
-ensuring students understand the world citizen concept
is extremely important, especially being an American as
we tend to be very America-centric.

Justice Oriented:
-Being a good citizen:
-call to action
-putting declarative knowledge to reasoned use
-challenge/change the status quo, problem solve1

-I personally related to this type the most

-Voting, although incredibly important, is not the
only or most direct way you can be a good citizen
-Be able to see through media bias, propaganda, and
just down right wrong information.. be able to see
that something is wrong, and then be able to come
up with an effective solution
-and then change it.. anyone can just say what is
wrong
-fixing a broken damn is much more helpful/valued
then telling everyone that the water is rushing
towards them

Connections to previous MR:

Good or bad news?
I think this is very good news. People with different views/values teaching children is the best-case scenario. One
teacher gives out certain views/concepts to his students, and other teachers do the same. Students then go on into
real life and all of these views/values collide. Students are now citizens and new views/values are formed, like a
melting pot of ideas.

Connections:
Just like how we discussed how all kinds of democracy are useful in their own rights, all kinds of teaching are as well.
There is no one size fits all for teaching. The goal is to just express the importance of it all. In the reading it says you
have to make then want to learn first. I really like this, and remember talking about that in previous posts. Its our job
as teachers to instill the need to learn, the drive to gain knowledge. Its the students job to take all of that which they
learn in our classroom, and apply it once they leave. Whether that be simply following the law and paying taxes, or
organizing a protest striving towards further social justice. Its all being a good citizen.
