Introduction
1.1 Purpose
Document Reference: Storage Work Instructions for Netapp Disk Upgrades
(NetApp-Shelf-RLM-Ontap-Disk Upgradesv1.0)
1.2 Scope
These process documents reflect our understanding the work executed by the
Capgemini India team for Netapp NAS Technology process on all supported
accounts

Pre-requisites
The user required to have the basic knowledge of NetApp FAS product portfolio, its
managed Tools and also proper KT attended from the SMEs satisfaction before
following the below procedure.
Change ticket has already been opened and approved by all approvers.

Preparation Steps

Navigate to the filer view or the operations manager and check for any
ERRORs or WARNINGs in the Exception report for the filer on which the
upgrade needs to be performed .

Access FilerView for the storage appliance(s) to be upgraded and check the
status of the filers. It should be normal:
# https://filermanagementIP/na_admin/
# https://filermanagementIP/na_admin/
System status at the bottom left hand corner of FilerView should be listed as
The systems global status is normal.
NOTE: DO NOT continue with upgrade if the systems global status is
not listed as normal. The graphic below has a red square
highlighting the global status using FilerView.

If FilerView is NOT available, then use the following console command to check
each filer health status: #environment status

Check for failed disks on each filer. Replace any failed disks before continuing:
# vol status -f

1. Download all current Disk
the NetApp NOW site - http://now.netapp.com/NOW/download/tools/diskshelf/
2. Select all current Disk Shelf and ESH, and then download the ZIP file to a folder
on your PC.

Is RLM firmware upgrade required? Yes will be checked for each filer prior the
upgrade
Recommended version: 4.0
If No, then continue to step 12, else:
Download RLM firmware upgrade files. Follow steps in the link below to
download files for the storage appliance being upgraded:
NOTE: Kindly download RLM both latest version of 3.1.x and 4.0 firmware
since version < 3.1.x require intermediate upgrade to 3.1.x before it can be
upgraded to 4.0

Setup Putty (or preferred application to access filer) to log all output during this
change. Save this file to local hard drive for reference at a later date if
required.

The step below is not required for NDU (Non Disruptive Upgrades)
Contact the relevant application support personnel to confirm that
arrangements are in place to shut down the applications prior to DOT upgrade.

Post installation user acceptance testing MUST be completed by the relevant
support groups confirm that this has been completed.
Copy both the current and upgrade versions of Data ONTAP to the Filer in the vol0
/etc/software folder.
NOTE: It is not necessary to copy the current version of Data ONTAP to the
filer if it already exists in the /etc/software folder.
2.1 Pre Upgrade steps and testing
1.
Ensure the Preparation steps section of this document has been completed.
Ensure there are no inconsistent flexible volumes exist: #vol status
2.
Confirm that NVRAM card is at least 256MB by entering the following command
on the filer console and confirming that the NVRAM card is at least 256MB. Do
not continue with upgrade if the NVRAM card is only 32MB.
#sysconfig

If projects are deployed in vfilers , verify the protocols used in the filers by
issuing the below command
#vfiler status a
4.
Run the below command which will give you the luns , share and nfs served
from the filer.
# vfiler run * lun show
# vfiler run * cifs shares
#vfiler run * exportfs
5.
If there are no vfiler in the filer, then run the commands below to view the luns
, shares and the nfs exports
6.
Print out /etc/rc and /etc/hosts files from the filer and check that entries in
these files are correct and meet requirements.

Upgrade Steps
3.1.
Pre-Upgrade Steps
1.
Setup Putty (or preferred application to access filer) to log all output during
this change. Save this file to local hard drive for reference at a later date if
required.
2.
Use the following command to confirm that at least 1 spare disk for each
storage appliance is available for each size of attached disk : #vol status -s
3.
Ensure that no raid groups are being reconstructed. Enter the following
command on each filer:
# sysconfig r

Check for failed disks on each filer. Replace any failed disks before
continuing:
# vol status -f

Verify that optional activities such as disk scrubbing are not active on all the
aggregates. Enter the command on each filer:
#aggr scrub status
If disk scrubbing is currently being performed, enter the following command
on each filer to stop disk scrubbing on all the volumes or aggregates:
#aggr scrub stop
6.
Verify that the backups are not active. Enter the following command from
each filer:
#sysstat 1
Verify that I/O is displayed for the tape section of the output. If backups are
currently active, coordinate with the backup team to get the backup
processes terminated.
Alternatively, check for any active NDMP sessions from each filer by using
the following command:
#ndmpd status
If any active session is found , terminate the session

Verify that SnapMirror updates are not currently active. View to see when the
last update occurred and ensure that updates are continuing. It may be
necessary to wait for the next scheduled update. Enter the following
command on each filer:
# snapmirror status
Enter the following command on each filer to disable the SnapMirror
services during the upgrade process:
# options snapmirror.enable of

# qtree status -v
10. Enter the following commands from vfiler0 on both the filers to obtain vfiler
information: (for filers not having vfilers, just run the commands without
vfiler run *. For example, for qtree status ,just run qtree status)
# vfiler run * qtree status
# vfiler run * exportfs
# vfiler run * cifs shares
# vfiler run * lun show
# vfiler run * lun show -m
# vfiler run * lun stats
11. Trigger an autosupport on from both the filers :
# options autosupport.doit preupgrade
12.
Map a drive or mount the Filer appliance root volume as a user with
administrator privileges.

Extract files from the shelf firmware upgrade compressed file to a temp
folder on your workstation.
3.
Copy all the files uncompressed from the shelf firmware upgrade file to
the /etc/shelf_fw directory in the filers root volume. Overwrite any existing
files in this folder.

Enter following command to upgrade the shelf firmware on all the disk
shelves in the system:
Shelf upgrade is done on a loop by loop basis. Confirm the loops for the
storage appliance being upgraded and modify as required below.

ENTER FOLLOWING COMMANDS ON the first filer (say filer1)
# priv set advanced
# storage download shelf <loop_id>
# priv set
WHEN PREVIOUS FW UPDATE COMPLETED,
ENTER FOLLOWING COMMANDS ON the second filer (say filer2)
# priv set advanced
# storage download shelf <loop_id>
#priv set

Enter the following commands on the filers to check for errors, confirm that
the shelf FW upgrade has been successfully applied to all shelves and that
there are no issues:
sysconfig r
sysconfig a
vol status
vol status f
lun show
3.1.2.RLM firmware
Complete the following steps:
1.
Enter the following command to display the current RLM firmware version:
#rlm status
2.
Check below condition:a. If current firmware version is earlier than 3.1, complete steps 3 to 10 to
upgrade to the latest 3.1.x version then continue with 4.0
b. If current firmware is 3.1.x, complete steps 7 to 10.

Map a drive or mount the Filer appliance root volume as a user with
administrator privileges.

Result: The RLM is updated you are prompted to reboot the RLM enter Y to
continue.

Map a drive or mount the Filer or NearStore appliance root volume as a user
with administrator privileges.

Copy the RLM_FW.zip (version 4.0) files to the /etc/software directory in the
filers root volume. Run below to list down available install package.
# software list

10. Enter following command to upgrade the RLM firmware in the system:
# software install RLM_FW.zip
# rlm update -f
Result: The RLM is updated you are prompted to reboot the RLM enter Y to
continue.
Enter the following commands on the filers to check for errors, confirm that the
RLM FW upgrade has been successfully completed.
# rlm status
Result: The RLM version should show the updated firmware.
3.1.3. Post Upgrade testing
1. Confirm that all volumes are listed as online by entering this command on the
filers:
# vol status
NOTE: Output will be similar to the following listing. Check to
confirm that all volumes are online:

Download relevant DOT 7.3.5 P1 upgrade source files from the NetApp NOW
website. Ensure the Software Images for Administration from a Windows PC
file is selected for download. Access the NOW website using the following link
and selecting the correct platform for the Storage Appliance being upgraded .
Suppose the existing DOT version is 7.2.x the corresponding upgrade to 7.3.x
would be the from the table below. You may also find the details from the
upgrade advisor.

Please carry out all the preparation steps as done prior to the shelf and RLM
upgrade.
Execute all the command as stated above and save the putty log in a file in
your
desktop/laptop.

filer:

Verify that I/O is displayed for the tape section of the output. If backups are

services during the upgrade process:
# options snapmirror.enable of
12. Confirm recent snapvaults have been completing successfully on each filer:
# snapvault status
Enter the following command on each filer to disable the SnapVault service
during the upgrade process:
# options snapvault.enable of
13. Enter the following commands on each storage appliance to display volume,
vfiler and qtree status, disk types, current firmware levels and etc. Ensure
these results are saved for later comparison:
# vol status

After the successful completion of the DOT upgrade, complete the following to
update specific options setting on emomni00XXc01 and emomni00XXc02:
Set the volume options to what it was before the upgrade and verify the
volume attributes.
Set the following options to on
# options raid.background_disk_fw_update.enable
# options raid.background_disk_fw_update.enable on
Confirm changes:
# options raid.background_disk_fw_update.enable
Disk firmware upgrade happens in the background once the firmware
upgrade files are places in the appropriate directory.
5.3 Post Upgrade Verification
