Cmo se utiliza before y after, lo sabes? Todos sabis su significado, before es antes y after despus, pero sabis cmo se construye una oracin con ellas? Aqu va la explicacin.
before
Before
Veamos un ejemplo: before goingto work, I went to the post office = antes de ir al trabajo, fui a correos.
Ejemplo: Have you been here before? = Has estado aqu antes?
After
1. Comopreposicin: well talk abo ut it after work = lo ha blaremos despus del trabajo o despus de trabajar.
Como decamos con before, podemos decir un verbo despus de before, pero debe ir en la forma -ing: after arriving home, I did my homework = despus de llegar a casa, hice los deberes.
2. Comoconjuncin: After I arrived home, I had a shower = despus de llegar a casa, me duch = como vemos, cuando decimos co njuncin es porque tenemos una oracin, con sujeto + verbo + complemento.
3. Comoadverbio: Ill call mum first and you can call her after = yo llamo a mam primero y despus la llamas t.
1.Sola. Ejemplo: I used to go to the beach every summer when I was a child = sola ir a la playa todos los veranos
2.Con un imperfecto:I used to go to the beach every summer when I was a child = iba a la playa todos los veranos
I used to be a teacher. Now Im retired = diras en espaol sola ser profesor? Verdad que no? Diramos: yo era profesor. Sin embargo en ingls se utiliza used to, lo ves?
Things used to be different = las cosas eran diferentes, mejor que solan ser diferentes, no crees?
Be used to+ -ing form(estar ha bituado a, estar acostumbrado a).Para que te acuerdes, decirte que como be significa ser oestar, be used to es estaracostumbrado a, conestar.
Get used to+-ing form(habituarse, acostumbrarse)
e.g. He is used to living alone
He got used to living alone

Anotheradvantageto living in a small villa ge is peace.
cup and advantage = singular
Other + plural noun
Examples: Some people think that living in the city is better than living in a village. Otherpeoplethink that life in a village is quieter.
Remember: people always plural! Common mistake:Another people
I dont like speaking in public when I am studying English in my school. OtherthingsI don t like are grammar and listening, which are quite difficult.
The + other + plural noun/ singular noun If we want to say elotro, we always use the + other, never another, independientemente de que el sustantivo sea plura l o singular.
Examples: I dont like that bag. I preferthe other bag(or I prefer the other one) = SINGULAR /I dont like those jeans. I preferthe other jeans(or I prefer the other ones) =PLURAL
Another + number + plural noun
Examples: Can I haveanothertwo beers, please? =another + 2 (number) + plural
REMEMBER!Other and another are always singular when they are followed by a noun, because they are adjective. However, other, when its not followed by a noun, its a pronoun and then = OTHERS
Example: There were three books on my table. One is here. Where are the others? others here is a pronoun, because its not followed by a noun, so we write -s.

If y whether
if-not-now-whenIf y whether, sabes la diferencia? Vamos a verlo.
Yes, I do OR No, I dont.
Una pregunta que no es yes/no question, sera: What time do you finish work?
Can you take care of Tommy for me? = This is a reporting yes/no question=I dont know yetwhether/ifI shall be able to look after Tommy during the Easter holidays or not.
Is Paco still around?=This is a reporting yes/no question= I dont knowwhether/ ifPaco is still around.

There are likely to be a lot of candidates for the job OR There will probably be

It is likely that + will + infinitive

Hablar ingls
mistakes 2
Vamos all:
When I was a child my mother didnt use to allow me go out after 8 oclock.
The correct thing:When I was a child my mother didn t use to allow me TOgo out after 8 oclock
Do you have car?
The correct thing:Do you haveacar?
Otro ejemplo: when I was at primary school, I didnt wear uniform.
The correct thing: when I was at primary school, I didnt wearauniform = uniform es un sustantivo singular y contable, al igual que car en la pregunta de arriba.
My friend is the most intelligent personofthe world.
The correct thing:My friend is the most intelligent personinthe world
My friend hasmuchmoney. He is a businessman.
The correct thing: My friend hasa lot ofmoney.
Much se utiliza con uncountable nouns, bien, porque money lo es, pero en oraciones negativas, por tanto: My friend doesnt have much money y my friend has a lot of money. Con oraciones positivas utilizamos a lot of.
I have 3 childrens.
The correct thing: I have 3children.
informations, homeworks, works.
The correct thing:information, homework, work.
inInternet
The correct thing:on the Internet
Con la palabra Internet necesitamos la preposicin on y el artculo the siempre!
I went to apublicschool (queriendo decir colegio pblico)
The correct thing: I went to astateschool.
How long
clock
How long will the exam last? = cunto tiempo durar el examen?
Common mistake:how much time the exam last?En esta o racin tenemosmuchos errores. Veamos uno a uno:
1. Recuerda,how long = cunto tiempo
How long do I have to wait to talk to the manager?
Examples:
1. How long have you been teaching English?
Cmo traduciras t esta pregunta, por cunto tiempo has estado enseando ingls? S, de verdad? No te gusta ms cunto tiempo llevas enseando ingls? How long + have + subject + past participle + V-ing? Tenemos aqu un present perfect continuous.
2. How long have you been studying German? = Cunto tiempo llevas estudiando alemn?
3. How long have you been married? = Cunto tiempo llevas casado/a?
La respuesta a estas preguntas se hace con for/since:
Ive been teaching Englishfor15 years.
Ive been studying German since 2006.
Ive been marriedfor5 years.
Seguimos utilizando el how long = cunto tiempo, ms la siguiente construccin:
How long + does + it + take + (person) + to infinitive?
Examples:
How long does it take you to get to work? = Cunto tiempo tardas en llegar al trabajo?
How long does it take you to go to the nearest supermaket from your house?
How long does it take from Alicante to Madrid by car?
How long does it take your son to walk to school?
RULE:
It + takes + (person) + time + to infinitive
How long does it take you to get to work? = It takesme 30 minutes (to get to work)
How long does it take you to go to the nearest supermaket from your house? = It takesme 10 minutes.
How long does it take from Alicante to Madrid by car? = It takes4 hours.
How long does it take your son to walk to school? = It takeshim 15 minutes.
In order to y so as to
purposeIn order to y so as to se utilizan para expresar la finalidad, purpose en ingls. Vamos a ver estos dos y el contraste con to infinitive, adems de so that.
1. To = In order to = So as to +INFINITIVE
Remember thatin order to and so as to are more formal than to, but the meaning is the same. So depending on the situation, if formal or informal, you will use to or in order to/so as to.
Examples: Im buying butter to make a cake (informal).
When the purpose isnegative, we use not,in order not toandso as not to. But we dont use not to.
2. So that +Subject+VerbExample: if you are walking at night, wear whiteso thatcarscansee you.
So that means para que + subject (para que los coches te puedan ver). On many occasiones we usemodal verbsafter the subject, in this case can.Now its your turn. Practise with these sentences:

Common mistakes:
1. Im spanish.
2. Im learningenglish.
3. My birthday is inmay.
4. Im going to the dentist next tuesday.
Recuerda:Spanish,English,May yTuesday.

Start = infinitive
= la pelcula, entonces SUBJECT = THE FILM
Sin embargo, when, where, why y how siempre han de llevar auxiliar.
Ejemplo:
What do you like doing in your free time? (con auxiliar) OR What happened yesterday? (sin auxiliar)
Where did you go yesterday night? (siempre con auxiliar)
Espero que lo hayas entendido. Ahora a practicar co n estosejercicios!
1. Make questions with or without auxiliaries:
1. What . on TV last night? (you/ watch)
2. Where . on Tuesday? (Mike/go)
3. Who . the Mona Lisa? (paint)
4. How many goals ..? (he/ score)
5. What . at the end of the film? (happen)
6. What team . the championship? (win)
2. Make a question about the word in bold in each sentence. Sometimes you need an auxiliary and sometimes you dont.
1. Queen Elizabeth I became queen of Englandin 1558.
2. Queen Elizabeth I became queen of England in 1558.
3. Lilithwas Adams first wife.
4. The Athenianssentenced Socra tes to death in 399 BC.

Sharon is the tallest girlin her class.
Otro ejemplo: My partner is the most beautiful womaninthe world
Common mistake:My partner is the most beautiful womanofthe world
Lets see a pair of examples for you to understand the difference:
1. My family and I are celebrating our dads birthday on a special way, were going on a cruise!
2. Would you like to come to the beach with my family and me next weekend?
My family and I is the subject of the sentence, so I is a subject, not me, which is an object.
My family and me is anobject,so me is an object. The subject of the sentence is you.
By the way, do you remember how to know what the subject of a sentence is? If you dont, read this brief explanation.
1. I have an apple every morning.
We ask the verb who? = who has an apple every morning? and the answer is I, so thats the subject.
2. Lets do the same with the first example: Who is celebrating dads birthday? = the answer is My family and I, so subject!
Common mistakes:
My family andmeare celebrating our dads birthday.
My husband andmeare going to the cinema tomorrow.
Quantifiers
Calculator How Much Can You Afford or Save

1. I havesome plantsin my house = tengo plantas en casa = some porque la oracin espositivay plants escountable + plural.
2. I don t have any plantsin my house = no tengo plantas en casa = any con oracinnegativay sustantivocountable + plural.
3. I havesome moneyon me = llevo dinero encima = some con oracinpositivaysustantivo uncountable.
4. I don t have any moneyon me = no llevo dinero encima = any con oracinnegativaysustantivo uncountable.
5. I don t have much money= no tengo mucho dinero = much porque la oracin esnega tivay moneyuncountable.
6. They do nt havemany friends= ellos no tienen muchos amigos = many porque la oracin esnegativay friendscountable.
7. I havea lot offriends= tengo muchos amigos = a lot of porque la oracin espositiva.
8.How muchsugar do you want in your coffee? = cunta azcar quieres en tu caf? = how much con oracininterrogativa y sustantivouncountable.
9.How manychildren do they have= = cuntos nios tienen? = how many en oracininterrogativacon sustantivocountable.
10. The village is very small.
11. Do you speak English?A little= hablas ingls?
12. Thatstoo muchsaltin my opinion = eso es demasiada sa l en mi opinin = too much con sustantivouncountablepara expresar la idea de demasiado.
13. I have too manycats and dont have enough time for them = tengo demasiados gatos = too many con sustantivoplural countable.
Tambin podemos decir too much y too many sin sustantivo detrs, por ejemplo: how many animals do you have? Too many, I think.
14. There is so muchnoisethat I cant sleep = hay tanto ruido que no puedo dormir = so much con sustantivouncountablepara expresar la idea de tanto.
15. I have so many booksthat my bookcase is full = tengo tantos libros que my estantera est llena = so many con sustantivoplural contable.
16. I feel lonely living in England because I havefewfriends= me siento sola viviendo en Inglaterra porque tengo pocos amigos.
17. My students have madelittle progress, Im very disappointed = mis alumnos han hecho poco pro greso, estoy muy decepcionada.
18. Im having a party at home and 8 friends of mine are coming. I have 12 chairs, so I haveplenty ofchairs= tengo muchas sillas, tengo de sobra, ms de lo que necesito.
Djame que te ponga un ejemplo: I have no milk in the fridge = no tengo leche en el frigo.
A. How many British friends do you have?
1) Be going to + Infinitive
Are you going to see a film tonight?
Are you going to cook tomorrow?
NOTA 2:
Cuando vamos a utilizar la estructura be going to + infinitive y el infinitivo es go, para no repetir verbos, porque coincide going con go, podramos o diramos simplemente going: Im goingto goto the dentist soon.
3) Will
Promises
Ejemplos:
Vale, pues en ingls utilizaramos el will: dont worry, youll be fine.
Life expectancy will improve in the future = la esperanza de vida mejorar en el futuro.
Climate change will be worse = el cambio climtico empeorar.
Have = tener Have got = tener = los dos indican posesin.
1)Have = tener
PRESENT SIMPLE
(+) (-) (?)
I have I dont have Do I have?
You have You dont have Do you have?
He/she/it has He/she/it doesnthave Doeshe/she/ithave?
El verbo have (sin got) se forma como cualquier otro verbo, por ejemplo, work. Utilizamos los auxiliares de present simple (dont, doesnt, do, does)
(+) (-) (?)
I work I dont work Do you work?
PAST SIMPLE
(+) (-) (?)
I had I didn t have Did you have?
Como cualquier otro verbo. Si seguimos con nuestro ejemplo de work, as lo haramos:
(+) (-) (?)
I worked I didnt work Did you work?
2)Have got = tener
PRESENT SIMPLE
(+) (-) (?)
I have got (ve got) I havent got Have I got?
You have got You havent got Have you got?
He/she/it has got He/she/it hasnt got Has he/she/it got?
We/you/they have got We/you/they havent got Have we/yo u/they got?
Si veis, esta forma de have got nos recuerda al verbo to be, en qu se parecen?
Rules:
V + S + C? = Have you got a car? = interrogativa
S + V + NOT + C = I havent (have not) got a car = negative
PAST SIMPLE
Ididnt havea mobile when I was a child.
Common mistake:I hadnt got a mobile.
Did you havea motorbike when you were a teenager?
Common mistake:Had you got a motorbike?
Otrocommo n mistakees hacer esto, a tentos!
Ive a blue car.
Por tanto?FALTA EL GOT!!As sera:
Ivegot a blue car.
Otrocommo n mistake:I havent a car.
The correct thing: I haventgot a car.
Otrocommo n mistake:Have you a car?
The correct thing: Have yougota car?
Verbos con ing o to infinitive
Vamos all!
teach +to infinitive.Example: My father taught me to swim when I was 3 years old.
learn +to infinitive.Example: When did you learn to drive?
tend +to infinitive.Example: I tend to repeat the same things to my children.
promise +to infinitive.Example: I promise not to tell anyone.
pretend + to infinitive.Example: I used to pretend to be sick when I didnt want to go to school.
cant afford +to infinitive= no poder permitirse.Exa mple: I would like to buy a new car, but I cant affo rd to buy it (or I cant afford it)
cant stand +ing= no soportar.Example: I cant stand walking in the sun in summer when its so hot.
cant/couldnt help + ing = no poder evitar.Example: I I couldnt help laughing when he fell off the chair.
imagine +ing.Example: I cant imagine speaking German fluently, I find it so difficult
risk + ing= arriesgarse, correr el riesgo.Example: I wouldnt risk leaving the door unlocked at night, its something that has always frightened me.
spend + time +ing.Example: I spent 30 minutes talking on the phone with mum yesterday.
practise +ing. Example: Why dont yo u practise speaking English with native people in the summer?
give up +ing= dejar de hacer algo.Example: I gave up smoking 20 years ago.
fancy +ing= apetercer.Example: do you fancy seeing a film tonight?
keep +ing= seguir. Example: keep trying! = sigue intentndolo.
enjoy +ing.Example: I enjoy swimming in the sea.
hate + ing.Example: I hate studying at night, but I do it quite often.
Example: I like playing the piano = me gusta y disfruto hacindolo.
like + to infinitive= no disfruto con ello, pero me gusta hacerlo porque es bueno para m, porque me beneficia de alguna forma. Example: I like to go to the dentist twice a year = disfruto yendo al dentista?
Another example: I like to eat vegetables every week. Theyre good for you = esto lo dira si no soy muy amante de las verduras, pero como porque son buenas. Ahora bien, si me encantan las verduras, pues dira: I like eating vegetables.
Example:
A. I have a headache. B. Why dont you try having an aspirin?
Another example:
A. My mobile isnt working properly today. B. Try switching it off and switching it on again after some minutes. It works sometimes
Example: I tried to reach the picture to clean it, but I couldnt.
Another example: He is trying to walk on a frame, but he cant, his legs are too weak after his operation.
Vamos a verlo co n unexample: I will never forget travelling to England when I was 16.
Another example: Will you ever forget seeing the Empire State Building? I wont. Preguntamos otra vez, cundo vimos el Empire State Building?
Example: Dont forget to phone Peter to tell him that the party has been cancelled = se te recuerda no olvidarte de hacer algo, ese algo no se ha hecho an por tanto, no puede ser ing, sino to infinitive.
Another example: I forgot to send the email to the manager.
verb patterns
ing en ingls
wish and regrets
What do you need words written on white board
En otro post expliqu cmo utilizarel verbo need en ingls. Revsalo si no te acuerdas.
1. I have to iron my clothes = tengo que planchar
My clothesneedironing.
Y ahora vamos acomparar estos dos ejemplos:
1.Ineed toiron my clothes
2.My clothes needironing
My clothes need ironing OR My clothes need to be ironed (necesitan ser planchadas, literalmente)
EXERCISE:
1. Hay que pasar la revisin al coche.
2. Hay que pintar la casa.
3. Hay que limpiar el jardn.

Recuerda que fregar los platos se dice do the washing up.
I work as a cook.
Preguntamos al verbo, who works as a cook? y nos contesta I, pues I es el sujeto.
Otro ejemplo: My friend is 25 years old = who is 25 years old?
When did the accident happen? = what happened? = an accident, verdad?

I explained to you on a previous post the patternregret + ing or to infinitive. Today Ill explain the pattern of remember. First, do you know what I mean when I say pattern? It refers to the structure a verb needs to be used and formed. Different verb patterns we have in English:
regret + ing or to infinitive
remember +ing or to infinitive = this is the one explained on this post.
forget + ing or to infinitive
try +ing or to infinitive
imagine + ing
afford + to infinitive
risk + ing
tend + to infinitive
agree + to infinitive
like, dislike, hate, love, enjoy and mind + ing
Etc.
Lets seeremembertoda y!
Remember has two differentrules, like regret, as I told you on a previous post.
1. Remember + ing
Example: I remember going to the park with my granddad when I was a child.
Nos preguntamos: When do I remember? = now y When did I go to the park? = in the past.
2. Remember + to infinitive
Example: Remember to lock the door when you leave.
Hacemos las preguntas de nuevo: When do I remember? = now y When should you lock the door? = later, when you leave. Tenemos entonces present y present,/futuro, por tanto, remember + to.
Si es negativo, simplemente aadimos not delante de -ing or to infinitive: Remember not to tell your dad the truth, he would get furious with you.

1) verbo conjugado + to infintive
Example: I want to go to the beach = want + to infinitive
2) verbo conjugado + ing
Example: I like swimming = like + ing (cuando hablamos de hobbies y cosas que nos gusta hacer)
3) verbo conjugado + infinitive sin to
Example: I must go to the dentist = must (verbo modal) + infinitive sin to. Todos los verbos modales (can, could, must, shoud, may y might) van seguidos de infinitivo sin to.

verbos con ing o to infinitive
verb patterns
ing en ingls
wish and regrets
I was cooking and the phone rang, so I stopped to answer the phone = paras de hacer algo, en este caso, cocinar, para hacer otra cosa, en este caso, contestar el telfono.
Be able to + infinitive
Albert Einstein
Be able to + infinitive significa poder. Otros verbos modales son: must, should, may y might. Bien,qu quiere decir verbo modal? Un verbo modal tienevarias implicacio nes:
1)Va seguido de un infinitivo sin to, por ejemplo: I can swim,NOI can to swim.
La negativa se hace pegando nt al verbo, cant: I cant go out tonight. Y la interrogativa se hace poniendo can al principio, seguido de sujeto e infinitivo: Can I go to the toilet, please?
Vamos a ello!
Por ejemplo: I could swim very well when I was 6 years old = saba nadar muy bien cuando tena 6 aos = referido a un tiempo pasado.
Por tanto, recuerda:
can = presente
could = pasado
Cmo expreso entonces futuro, presente perfecto, y cualquier otro tiempo verbal? Es aqu donde entra be able to.
Future= will be able to + infinitive = I will be able to go to the party = podr ir a la fiesta.
Present perfect = have/ has been able to + infinitive = You have always been able to sing very well = siempre has podido cantar muy bien.
Past perfect= had been able to + infinitive = if I had been able to phone you, I would have done it = si hubiera podido llamarte, lo habra hecho (esto es una tercera condicional)
2nd Conditional= If I had more money, I would be able to spend my holidays on the beach = si yo tuviera ms dinero, podra pasar mis vacaciones en la playa.
1) I like being able to get up late at the weekend = me gusta poder levantarme tarde el fin de semana.
Con verbo modal: I should be able to talk to her this evening = debera poder hablar con ella esta tarde. Con verbo modal, tambin utilizamos la estructura be able to.
Por ltimo, decirte que be able to tambin se puede poner en presente y en pasado: Im able to dance well y I was able to do it.
En el presente, hay una diferencia entre utilizar could o was/ were be able to + infinitive. Cuando estamos hablando de una situacin especfica en el pasado, tengo que utilizar was/were able to + infinitive, por ejemplo: it was difficult for me the last exercise of my exam, but eventually, I was able to do it = me fue difcil, pero al final lo pude hacer. En este caso tambin podramos utilizar manage to + infinitive = I managed to do it = pude hacerlo, me las apa, me las arregl para hacerlo.
Verbos mo dales en inglsmayymight. These modal verbsare used to expressprobability.Although they are highly used in English, Spanish students dont normally make use of them and I wo nder why.
Lets see if you use them after this easy and clear explanation!
As any modal verb, they are followed byan infinitive without to,for example: may come, might go.
They are used when we want to express an idea or activity which is not sure (its just probable) as we say in Spanishpuede que s, puede que no.
Example: I may go to the beach on Sunday. Lets see if I have free time at last!
This is another translation:igualhago algo (but I m not sure).
I may start learning English, but I dont know, I prefer German = Igual empiezo a estudiar ingls, pero no s, prefiero alemn.
Difference between may and might
It is often explained that might expresses a smaller possibility/probability than may, but in fact there is little difference between them.
Negative
May + not + infinitive (without to)
I may not go to Peters party. Im so tired = igual no voy a la fiesta de Pedro, estoy tan cansado/a
I might not go on holiday this year, I wouldnt like to spend my money = igual no me voy de vacaciones este ao
Interrogative
May + subject + infinitive?
May I go to the toilet? = Puedo ir al aseo? (at school with children)
We use may in questions to ask for permission in formal situations, as a synonym of can I?
Unejerciciopara que practiquis, traducir espaol ingls:
1. Vas a venir a mi casa? Puede que s.
2. Puedo abrir la ventana, por favor?
KEYS:
1. Vas a venir a mi casa? Puede que s = are you coming home? I may come.
2. Puedo abrir la ventana, por favor? = may I open the window, please?
I may buy a new car because the one I have is too old.
4. Puede que luego te llame, si tengo tiempo = I may phone you later, if I have time
5. Igual no salimos a cenar con vosotros hoy, estamos muy ocupados = we may not eat out with you today, were too busy.
Recordar que es muy stil la diferencia entre may and might, por tanto, podis usar uno u otro indistintamente.
Verb patterns, do you know what I mean when I say verb patterns? Well, a verb pattern is the structure a verb follows, the one you have to know to be able to use that particular verb. Today well see mind, let, allow, make and want.
1)MIND
First, mind means importar.
RULES(verb pattern):
1.Mind + ing
Would you mind openingthe window, please? Im hot.
2. Do you mind if?
Do you mind ifI open the window? Im hot.
Common mistake:Would you mindopenthe window, please? Im hot.
Phrases with mind:
I dont mind: no me importa, no pasa nada
Mind your own business= mtete en tus asuntos
Example: Why dont you just mind your own business?
Make up your mind = decdete
Example: Are you coming with me? Make up your mind!
To have something in mind = tener algo en mente
Example: What do you have in mind? (qu tienes en mente?)
Change your mind = cambiar de opinin
Example: Dont change your mind about this matter, please.
Example: Youcanspeak your mind, butyou also have to back up your words by action.
2)LET VS ALLOW
Let and allow are the same in meaning, but their structure is different. You have to pay attention to it, as it is a subtle difference!
RULES:
1.Let + somebody + infinitive (without to)
Example: let mexknow if you are coming as soon as possible (x means nothing here, no to)
2.Allow + somebo dy + to + infinitive
Example:
Mum, am I allowedtoplay a computer game now? (British children ask this question meaning: me dejas? Puedo?)
You are not allowedtosmoke in here, only on the balcony.
Remember! The pronunciation of allow =/la/
And remember as well: let let let = Irregular verb, the three forms are the same!
3)MAKE
Make + somebody +infinitive (without -to)= llevar a una persona a hacer algo
Examples:
You make me smile = me haces sonreir
I make my students speak English in class.
Common mistake:I let my childrentogo to school on their own
Remember:
make made made = irregular verb
Another thing about make: when it is used in the passive, then we need -to. Example: Iwas ma deto speak English in class (my teacher made me speak). Was made is a passive.
4)WANT
1. want + to infinitive
Example: I want to go to the dentist next week.
2. want + somebody + to + infinitive
Example: I want you to pass your English exam: quiero que t apruebes tu examen de ingls.
In this case, we have a subject (I) and and second person, somebody (you). This is the structura en English, whereas in Spanish, we use a subjunctive (apruebes).
Common mistake:I want that you pass your English exam
I want that is not possible in English!
EXERCISE: translate the following sentences:
1. Quiero que mi hija aprenda ingls
2. No quiero que t llegues tarde a casa
3. Quieres escuchar msica conmigo?
4. No quiero que me esperes
5. Juan quiere aprender un segundo idioma
KEYS
1. Quiero que mi hija aprenda ingls = I want my daughter to learn English

3. Quieres escuchar msica conmigo? = Do you want to listen to music with me?
4. No quiero que me esperes = I dont want you to wait for me
5. Juan quiere aprender un segundo idioma = John wantsto learn a second language.Remember the -s for 3 person singular.
What is it like?
what-is-the-weather-like-today-1-638
Os voy a explicar hoy cundo y cmo utilizamos la pregunta de What is it like? Quiz has visto esta pregunta con weather: what is the weather like?, para preguntar Qu tiempo hace?.
What + verb to be + object/ person + like?
Por ejemplo:
1. What is your house like? Its big and cosy = como vemos, en la respuesta estamos dando cualidades de la casa.
2. What is your English teacher like? Shes strict, but very friendly = lo mismo, damos una descripcin de la profesora.
3. What was the weather like yesterday? It was windy and rainy = describimos el tiempo ayer.
Veamos una oracin con futuro: What will the weather be like tomorrow? Itll be sunny.
Its big and cosy. Esto no es correcto. Como ya hemos dicho, cuando queremos que nos den cualidades de lo que preguntamos, la estructura a seguir es What is it like? En cambio, utilizamos la estructuraHow + verb to be + subject?para saber el estado o la condicin de algo o alguien.Ejemplos:
1. How a re you? Im fine. = Cmo ests?
2. How is your mother? Shes fine.
3. Hows the furniture of your new house? Its worn out (desgastados, viejos)
En la primera, what is it like? = apariencia de algo, descripcin, cualidades. Sin embargo, how + verb to be + subject? = el estado temporal de algo.
Wish en ingls sabes qu significa?
Today I would like to explain to you how to use I wish as well as the verb regret.
I wish means ojal, ya me gustara.
RULES:
I wish +past simple= sometimes possible and sometimes impossible
Example: I wish Iwas taller (impossible to get) I wish Iwonthe lottery (possible to get)
Cuando tenemos el verbo to be, podemos utilizarwasywerecon las personas I/he/she.
I wish Iwas/weretaller = esto es as porque es un sentido hipottico, cuando esto ocurre, were se puede utilizar tambin con I y la 3 persona del singular.
I wish +past perfect(had + past participle) = always impossible, its past
Example: I studied French at school. I wish Ihad studiedEnglish as I could find a better job now (impossible to get-its past)
Regret is a verb which means lamentarse, arrepentirse.
RULES:
Ejemplo: I regret studying biology when I was at university as I cant find a job now.
Nos preguntamos: When do I regret? = now y When did I study biology? = in the past.
Otro ejemplo: I regret going to the cinema last week. I didnt like the film at all. Hacemos la prueba: When do I regret? = now y When did I go to the cinema? = last week = past.
2. Regret + to + say/ tell= lamento decirte / informarte / comunicarte de o siento decirte/ info rmarte/ comunicarte
Ejemplo: I regret to tell you that we cant go away for the weekend because I have to work.
Hacemos las preguntas de nuevo: When do I regret? = now y When am I going to tell you something? = now. Tenemos entonces present y present, por tanto, regret + to.
Si es negativo, simplemente aadimos not delante de -ing Example: I regretnottellingmy father the truth.
EXERCISE:
1. I wish I ________________ speak English (can)
2. I wish I________________ a new car (have)
3. I regret________________ to the party as I saw my ex-wife (go)
4. I wish I________________ my father about failing my English exam as he is furious with me (tell)
5. I wish I________________ play a musical instrument (can)
6. I regret________________ you that you have an exa m (tell)
7. I regret________________ engineering like my mother. I would be a n engineer now like her (study)
8. I wishI ________________ rich (be)
9. I regret________________ my house in Madrid, I dont like the city, its quite noisy and stressing (buy)

KEYS:
1. I wish I __could________ speak English (can)
b) how a
c) what
d) what a
1)How+ adjetive=howlovelyyour house is! = qu bonita es tu casa!
2)What+ (adjetive)nouns =What a lovelyday!
Ejemplos: Qu nio ms mono = what a cute boy! / Qu mono es el nio = how cute the boy is!
What tasty milk!
13. Thats girl father is so rich
a) whom
b)whose
c) whos
d) which
14did you see last Sunday?
a) whom
b) b) whose
c) to whom
d) at whom
De nuevo, oracin de relativo. Whom en este caso porque es a quin, pero como antes ya coment, tambin podramos decir:whodid you see last Sunday?
15. Is anybody there? Yes,.
a) it is
b)there is
c) she is
d) there are
Como toda pregunta en ingls, la contestacin se hace tal y como hacemos la pregunta, por ejemplo, si yo pregunto: do you like milk?, contestara: yes, I do OR no, I dont. Lo mismo sucede con there is/are, cuando pregunto: Is there anybody there?, contesto igual, yes, there is OR no, there isnt.
Quantifiers
