Please mention the questions and answers discussed in the interview. (At least 10)

Started with a brief intro of myself and the interviewer's introduction.

Q:-What do you understand by competency?

Each interviewer will take notes on his laptop as the interview proceeds.
He will first give his introduction and then ask for your introduction.
A:- A brief about school education, bachelor's college (2-3 lines),
Work experience and then internship (more details will be asked by interviewer from here that will decide
further questions)

Guesstimate : Assume you're standing on top of a hill in Kozhikode, what is the number of stars you can see?
Answer : used the field of vision logic

All about my work experience, my family, my internship brief & questions like why MBA & why MBA after core
engineering work experience.

Q:-Which role have you applied for? Why Business Analyst?

There were 6 interviews already conducted before I entered the room. The question was almost consistent
across all the finalists. So I was prepared; at least from my end. I wasn't sure whether it made sense.
A:-I started out by saying that I was a fit for the role and then stating the 'why's. I put three of my attributes in
front of the panel which included leadership skills and ability to work under constraints and illustrated them
with the help of examples (previous work experience, internship, committee member etc.) drawn from my CV.
It was necessary that there was clarity of thought and that was being communicated to the panel.

Q : Tell us something about yourself.

A: Gave a basic introduction about myself.

Q:- What are your hobbies?

A:- As I had mentioned one of my hobbies as following the advertisement campaigns of different companies,
the interviewer asked me about the recent two favorite campaigns of mine with the proper reasons.
I mentioned about ABG's Mutual Fund "Let the money roll in" campaign and Pantene's "Breaking the labels"
Campaign

Q:-Why did you choose IIM K?

The group was led in the wrong direction with respect to the meanings of the words in the topic and was never
corrected by any one else in the group.
Q1: How did you think the Group Discussion go?
A1: The Group Discussion went well

1st interview was taken by the HR of the company.

They expect you to know about the roles you have applied for. I was given a situation in which I had to
convince Calvin Klein to come aboard as a seller. I spoke about the benefits, company's competitive
advantage and margins.

Q:-Improve one of Google's products?

A:-I took Picasa and suggested ways to improve it. Like make it more user friendly, sharing capabilities with
friends, crowd-source to get funky new features to be a hit among young generation, make it inline with
Instagram/ flicker. Ways to get a loyal bunch of customer to increase user base.

Be thorough with work experience.

The interview questions were mainly based on situational analysis (related to Google's product AdWords),
technical (product understanding), understanding of online/offline media and advertising, behavioral fit (team
work, handling conflicts, etc.), HR questions, some guesstimates and puzzles.
All 3 rounds tested understanding on the given areas. There was no standard structure in terms of the 1st
round being technical or 2nd round being HR. Their idea was to evaluate the candidate on all of the criteria by
maximum panelists.

Q:-Tell me about yourself.

A:-I started with my internship experience, about my project what all I did. It was mainly based on consumer
preference assessment, related to market research. I explained them the objective, approach, methodology
and recommendations made.

Q:-Tell me about yourself.

The interview was about the case study competition. Details of the case, my approach, proposed solution etc.
Entry strategy for Snapdeal in Grocery- STP and 4P's

Q:-Tell me about yourself.

Q:-Tell me about yourself? What are your hobbies?

Q:- Tell me about yourself.

A:- My name is Himanshu Mittal and I have been consistent academic performer throughout. But this has not
limited my learning to theory only as I preferred to learn from people. This mode of learning started from
engineering college through my friends, peers, seniors and professors. My four years of work experience has
equipped me with various tools such as TPM, lean etc. and most important one is people management skill
due to my varied responsibility of starting from shift operations to leading the team of 14 engineers and over
200 workers. I am looking forward for career which provides me exposure on multiple fronts such as strategy,
data analytics, operations and product management in challenging and dynamic environment which gives me
continuous learning.

Interview round 1- Mostly CV based

Q1:-Tell me about your family. The HR head was quite inquisitive about my siblings' college, Asked me where
my sister's and younger brother's college, current city.
Q2:-Asked me about Why MBA, Why did you do Engineering, Why not B-Com".
Q3:- Asked Me about my summer internship- Told him the objective, approach, implementation, and result.

Q:-Why digital marketing?

A:-Talked about digital marketing as being the next big thing in marketing, huge scope, challenging career,
prior experience as being a plus

Q:- Walk us through your CV

A:- Spent 10 minutes talking about the prominent aspects of my CV. Cross questions were posed and suitable
answers were given.

Q:-Walk me through your CV.

A:-Internship, work experience and Undergraduation

Q:-Tell me about Yourself?

A:- My advice here is not to be specific. Please elaborate little bit and try to put some leadership skills while
introducing yourself either in school, college, company. It might create impact on interviewer.

Questions related to mathematics such as what is Fourier Transform, Laplace transform and such other
related to different types of regressions, integrations and statistics.
I answered half of them which I could recollect and for the rest I preferred not to bluff.

Q:-.Why MBA?

Questions on the Internship: What you did and how?

So please make sure that you know your internship in and out.

Q: Explain the summer internship project.

A: Explained as per the CV.

Q:-A consumer goods company wants to double its revenue and increase its EBITDA by four times and wants
your help with it. What would you suggest?

Q:- Introduce yourself.

A:-Gave an already prepared, brief and crisp introduction.

Any positives about the entire process?

Relaxed and to the point questions.

To secure an HR job from a campus like ours you need to know your subjects in and out.

If you get stuck at any point, they helped by giving hints, thus, encouraging the candidate.
The overall experience of Amazon's recruitment process gives a lot of learning and prepares you for resumebased questions in other interviews, in case you don't get selected here.

I think the process was very well- managed, no complaints.

Rigorous process.

I fumbled at the first question but I managed to hold my ground from the second one. The panel was looking
for confidence and the ability to think on one's feet. The questions fired to other interviewees were as random
as possible. But the essence was consistent. They didn't really focus much on grades but, as stated earlier,
consistent confidence and clarity of thought.

They were well organized. The Group Discussion evaluation was also systematic. The groups were decided
beforehand by the company after screening the profiles. The interview was mainly CV based and situation
based so nothing out of the blue was asked .

Not Applicable

Their first priority was to test your finance knowledge. And I had a good conversation with the HR team.

Questions were not too technical about the content studied at IIM-K or graduation.

You are given an option of choosing a role of your choice. If you can justify how you are fit for the role, they
all give you the same role.

One on one interviews. You can take time and think if the answer does not strike you immediately.

You will be given ample time to think over the questions and it is easy going. Be relaxed.

The panelists were very relaxed and supportive. Definitely not a typical pressure cooker interview situation.

Logical situation based and case based questions were asked during the interview. Points picked up mainly
from the CV and questions based on those points.

The entire evaluation process is very rigorous as each candidate is evaluated by various panels to minimize
subjectivity.

Very in-depth process in the interview, they check your approach

Systematic process.

I was interviewed directly by the Head of Fashion category which is very good .

It was very transparent, robust and standardized process. The feedback from one round was being passed in
another round and everything which was discussed was noted down by interview panel.

They decide on the role which is best suited for you and if they have made up their mind to take you, you can
negotiate with them on the role.

Ample time to think and answer, interviewers very friendly and give out hints in case you're stuck. Good
answers are appreciated and wrong answers are corrected at each round.

Simple one interview round. Shortlist of candidates was based on the CV relevance to the roles they offered.

Well versed with CV and also what company does. You could probably use them in the case.

Entire Process was smooth.

Short and sweet.

Very systematic and they give you feedback at each and every step so that you are aware where you are
headed.

Well Executed.

Not Applicable

The process was smooth and results for each round were being announced quickly. I did not have to wait for
more than 30 minutes between rounds.

Friendly interviewers.
Operations work experience not mandatory. Just needs willingness to learn.

Any negatives about the process?

None

None

The students who don't have prior experience if operations are shortlisted initially but are dropped after 1-2
rounds.

None

Role offered wasn't what some people had given a preference for.

Nothing as such. Because there was just one panel, the process lasted for nearly 14 hours.

Since they had shortlisted 16 students for the interview and each interview went on for almost 30 minutes
the wait for the final results was grueling.

None

You might have problem in communicating through telephonic interviews. So just be patient and ask in case
you do not understand any comments or questions. Make sure there is no silence moments of more than 10
seconds unless you've taken permission from the interviewer.

None

1st shortlist based on the online aptitude test is quite useless.

5 rounds is quite intensive.

Long wait for final result.

None

Each interview was equally lengthy and exhausting.

Only one panel was interviewing three candidates at a time. Students were given puzzles or guesstimates
and were left to think for 10 to 15 minutes then the same person would come back and further continue the
process. The process was not smooth. It could have been more organized.

The process was very cumbersome, hectic and frustrating due to waiting time.

Very lengthy.

Answering immediately. Could have thought initially before answering.

None

None

It was very long. It started at 6.30 in the morning and ended at 11 pm in the night. So that was the only
negative thing.

None

None

An interviewer was a six sigma master black belt expert who had immense knowledge on Six Sigma and
QM. Asked few question on Six Sigma implementation tools.

Feedback from/Questions asked to other candidates shortlisted for the interview process

They were expecting our basics to be clear, not very extensive knowledge on six sigma or lean. Also they
expect us to speak confidently and be honest if you are not aware of any topic. Take the written test very
seriously as the cut off will be very high and even one or two mistakes can prove costly.

Candidates who were short-listed for roles like BD and account management were asked guesstimates.

Apart from things discussed above, guesstimates were common for candidates having non-operations
background.

Guesstimates
Why Project Management or why Business Analyst?
Scenario based questions.
Introduction
HR questions
About the family

Work experience responsibilities

Why the role?

Why the switch of verticals?
Questions on academic projects and B-School Competitions.

Other candidates were also given situations and asked about the approach to solve it. Most of the questions
were based on the CV itself.

Lot of puzzles and guesstimates were asked by different teams.

All were asked finance based questions but mostly basics.

What is Fourier Transform.

Explain Kirchhoff's Law to a 5 year old.
Guesstimate: Number of ants in IIM-K.
You have worked in IT and then manufacturing sector, why Banking now?

Thorough knowledge of E-commerce industry and competitors.

Question and Answer 1

Work experience related question about what exactly was the project I had worked for.

There was flowchart which was explained in the presentation about the functioning of Snapdeal. On the
basis of that they asked me to draw the organization design.
Keep your eyes and ears open in the presentation to answer questions like that.

Q:- Tell a situation where you helped your customer in an extra-ordinary manner (asked in 3 rounds). What
were the challenges and how did you overcome them?
A:- Quoted an example from job where worked on better visibility of parameters in field.
In case your work experience didn't involve any direct interaction with customer, then make the department
in your organization that uses the results of your work. But, don't ever say that you never worked for a
customer.

Q:-(Based on my summer internship) What are the methods used for evaluation of sales channel?
A:- Store visits , focus group interviews of salespersons, telephonic interviews with partners and distributors,
customer feedback forms
Guesstimate- Find out the estimate of year 1 sales of a new L'Oreal men's cosmetic
A:- I started by breaking down the population into male-female, then urban rural split & then the generation
split i.e. splitting the whole urban male population into 4 generations & considering some percentages of
each generation as my target audience. then I estimated their consumption as percentages & estimated unit
wise consumption. We argued alot, HR & I, but ultimately, I think my depth & reasoning impressed him even
though my answers were inflated.

Q:-Why Leadership skills? Why do you think they matter in your job?
A:- I tried to highlight the points they had mentioned in their presentation earlier. The ability to think on one's
feet; the ability to take decisions and once again gave examples to support my points.

Q-: Which of the two roles do I want and why?

A-: Opted for BA. I was familiar with the role because of my IT work experience and said that I liked it and
wanted to take it up fully.

Q:- Design a print media campaign for Snapdeal

A:- I had come up with a creative campaign wherein I told Snapdeal to have certain part in the bottom right
of every page of newspaper. And then on every page, two pockets are shown. Gradually when the products
are brought from Snapdeal the money level in the pocket does not fall much but if bought from other sites,
the pocket level plummets quickly. Something of that sort to depict the message about "Best Deals
Everyday".

Tell me about your strengths and weaknesses.

Q2: Did you get to know of our opinion about the Group Discussion?
A2: Well we know that we the group was misled and even though initiative are rewarded, the group should
not be led in the wrong direction.

Educational background and work experience.

Q:- Your client wants to advertise on Facebook rather than on google. How would you convince him to stay?
A:- I talked about the stages in which buying occurs like Awareness, influence and purchase. While
Facebook is just in awareness part, google is present in all the three parts. Awareness through AdWords,
influence through re-targeting, and can monitor the influence of ad on sales through web analytic. Therefore
you get more information through google than through Facebook.

Be thorough with internship.

Questions related to situational analysis and product knowhow:

1. Couple of clients have started pulling out of AdWords this quarter (sudden attrition). What could be
possible reasons? How would you approach and fix the issue?
(Cited reasons like drop in employee productivity, drop in CTR, etc. Caught onto CTR and explained further
on fixing the issue - redesigning the ad in terms of choice of words, landing page v/s deep link, improving ad
extensions, etc.)
2. A client is suddenly seeing a drop in clicks (CTR)? Possible reasons? How to fix?
(Extension to previous question)
3. Given 3 ad campaigns with data like impressions, CTR, bounce back rate - Which would be the best
choice for the client?
(Had to compare CTR v/s bounce back - taking both into account - and arrive at a common measure to
check effectiveness of the campaign)
4. Why would bounce back rate be high despite higher clicks on the ad?
(Detailed on why advertisement's quality score and hence advertisement rank could be low. Discussion let to
suggestion of improvement in ad features and also some pointers on bidding for ad slots.)
5. What is the flow of a user's interaction with a Google advertisement? Show the sequence of steps and
associated metrics on paper.
(Had to jot down from the point of search to that of actual sale/conversion and all metrics like CTM, CTR,
CTA, ROI, etc.)
6. Given data points on impressions, CTR, etc. - Was asked to point out issues, calculate ROI for the client
and deduce if it was a worthwhile campaign.
(Data based. Simple understanding of the given numbers and meaning of the metrics was enough to
answer.)
7. In which cases would you use CTM, CTR, CTA as measurement criteria?
(Talked about ads for awareness v/s actual sale or conversion. Why some companies choose one over the
other.)
Technical questions mainly related to AMMR.
SPSS related.
What is K-mean clustering?
Difference between hierarchical and k-mean clustering.
Which one is better?
Advantage of one over another.

Q:- Tell me something that is not in your CV.

A:- It is important to have strong points for this question and prepare answers by relating your traits with the
company values and mission.

Digital branding, SOS vs. SOV, Situation based questions. Eg. Motorola is planning to launch a mobile
phone, so, which media vehicle will you advertise?

Q:- What do you understand about the role offered?

Guesstimate on number of travelers visiting India.

Q:-Why did you come for MBA and has your purpose of coming for MBA been fulfilled?
A:- As I said I believe that in initial phase of career learning is very important. I was in FMCG industry for four
years and I felt that my learning was stagnant.

Asked me about the competitions I had one until that time, I had a PPI from RPG, so he asked me when the
company is visiting the campus.
Told him we are not supposed to tell that. I think he was more interested in knowing whether my PPI process
was over or still pending so I told him, I do not know when the company will be visiting and I am not sure
whether it will be, visiting at all but we will have a VC interview. (Made sure, he knows that my process is still
pending).
Then he asked me what was the case about. Told him that we got 3 different cases for three rounds and
explained the problem statement for each round

Why is digital marketing challenging compared to traditional marketing?

More in-depth understanding of the customer required with respect to likes, dislikes, influences and surfing
habits, online marketing plan challenging due to large data volumes thrown to user, constantly evolving
Q: A plant is required to be shifted from France to India. How will you evaluate the proposal and what would
be your recommendations?
A: Evaluate why the proposal was given in the first place, identify the main factors affecting the decision, key
actors and their issues, short and long term repercussions across the value chain, competitor responses,
government and other stakeholders etc.
Based on all these factors, recommend your solution. Keep asking relevant questions for additional
information and make relevant assumptions and state them while presenting your solution.

A:- (Why ecommerce) I cited my interest in it through my SCM project & my eBay case study competition
experience. I was questioned at length about the eBay case study.
As for why Snapdeal: I talked about the growth, the CSR initiatives.

The focus had now moved to my courses. The first question that followed.
"Consider I am a bank and I have an internet channel, Presently I charge an exorbitant fee to the end
customer. Give me a 'pricing' strategy to charge it realistically.
The question seemed vague to me at first and hence, I made sure I had understood it properly by repeatedly
asking the panel whether my assumptions were correct. As I questioned, I jotted down the points in the
notepad given to me and then started drawing out the plan. I made sure that I spoke out loud at every step
as I tried to come to an answer. I set about with the Marketing Mix: everything was in place; the need of the
hour, as already stated, was to price the product realistically. Demand creation was the way to go driven by
the customer's willingness to pay.

Behavioral and Generic Questions:

1. Suppose you head a team of people who are more experienced than you (seniority wise) and you have to
resolve a conflict of interest that has arisen. How would you handle it?
(Used a past experience from previous company that was similar in nature and explained how that can be put
to use here).
2. Suggest any new product/idea related to technology. What are the benefits of the idea? What are the
challenges? How will you convince your lead about the idea given that he/she is skeptical about it? Having
weighed the pros and cons, would you suggest a company like Google to invest in it?
(Detailed discussion on the idea suggested - online travel booking through wearables. After lots of
questioning on challenges, I still decided to invest. I do not know what they were expecting, but I do not think
it would have been good to chuck one's own idea. More about conviction.)

Q:- We are giving you one situation. In our FCs we have conveyor and packaging machine which does the
identification of right pack, packaging, invoice printing etc. and final package goes to warehouse for delivery.
If you have to design a performance measurement matrix for that how will you do that?

and lead indicators. The monthly matrices will be based on leg indicators whereas the routine operations will
focus on lead indicators. I will select the parameters which covers quality, serviceability for both internal and
external customers, cost and productivity. For quality I will try to measure the defected packs or missing
invoice or wrong invoice something like that based on the sampling. For serviceability I will try to measure
line efficiency, days supply index which is indicator of inventory levels. For cost I will measure standard
versus actual cost per pack or I will divide in terms of variable or fixed cost. For productivity I will measure the
labor productivity in terms of Rs/pack.

My Guesstimate approach Clarified from him - what is the meaning of Non-regional - He clarified non-regional excludes Hindi and other
regional languages channel like Sun TV, Bangla Channels etc.
Therefore, which means I had to quantify the no of English and other nation language if tele-casted in India
per day
Approach:
Before starting to brief my approach to him, I very clearly stated my assumptions - First- I am not counting
and repeat telecast, only one telecast as one show.
Second - I will calculate it one per day basis and I am not counting movies
Then I told him my approach: It will consist of 2 broad language sets. 1- English, 2- any other country
language channel subscribed by viewers.
Started solving for the first set - A basic set top connection will have approximately 150 - 200 channels - 30
approximately would be Hindi, 100 approximately would be regional. So the remaining 50-70 would be
English, broke it down into music and News shows, Movie and entertainment.
Then took 8-10 non-repeat shows telecasted in each category and then multiplied. Also took 4 English
Cartoon channels
Now for solving other category, non-English but other nation language- I said there would be Indians who had
spent 8-10 years in foreign nations and expats from foreign nations settled in India who would have
subscribed foreign languages in India.
Then I came up with a list of 8-10 most probable countries visited by Indians
- Middle East countries, China, Malaysia, Singapore, US, Korea, France, Italy, UK.
Took three channels from each nation, multiplied by a figure of 8, and came up with a second set of no.
Finally add the two sets of Nos.

sent the message to Mr. XX and he has told us to do that. I stopped this practice of sending these sums
immediately and instructed them to solve the problem on their own. Engineering VP called me for that and I
was asked to deliver the results no matter what method I used. The results initially dipped but started
improving and reached at accepted levels after sometime.

confirmation to shipping to delivery. Asked me to identify all the gaps in the process and find solutions for

confirmation, still they call the customer service. The reason was that customers were not able to identify the
difference between the dispatching and shipping meaning, I was then asked how should this be solved.

which I did that I tried to find out people who were open to the idea of change. There will be always few
people who will like the idea but wont come in open. I made them the torch bearer of management
philosophy and I made the workers who were most notorious and union members so that mass will follow
them if they are convinced.
Engineers left because they did not see the growth opportunities in the company. There was the position of
team leader in between engineer and manager which used to be filled from outside if any team leader left or
being promoted. I proposed the management to identify the high performing engineers and pass them

improved the confidence of engineers.

Suggestions to the next batch of students if any

Take initiative in Group Discussion. Make yourself heard. Your presence should be felt. Prepare your CV
well.

1. Be well versed about your previous job and internship.

2. Try to identify the situations where you helped customers in non-traditional way during your job or
internship.
3. Get a basic understanding of operations at Amazon.
4. There are some common questions that are asked in each round. The key is to remain consistent in all
rounds as they check whether you are speaking the truth by giving same answer.

Prepare your resume & HR questions very well. Spend time on guesstimates also. Be confident through
every stage. Be very well apprised about the e-commerce industry. Read newspapers. Nothing compares to
knowledge.

Just a few.
1. Be confident
2. Make sure you demonstrate that you have clarity of thought.
3. Illustrate your answers with examples
4. If a case is given, make sure you ask relevant questions, state your assumptions and as you work out the
case, speak out loud so that they can gauge your thought process. To make sure that it doesn't backfire, go
through all the relevant preparation material forwarded by the IGs; specially the strategic frameworks and
guesstimates.

Should be thorough about everything written in your CV, even why you did a particular project. They might
test you on a specific point in the CV. They were not asking technical questions, did not get any questions
related to the banking sector. Be ready to think on your feet. Your attitude during the interview also matters.
Be thorough about the roles offered and why you prefer a particular role.

Well there is only one suggestion. It depends on you how you want to drive your interview. The lever is in
your hands. So try to orient the entire interview in the direction which you want. BE ENTHUSIASTIC. BE
YOU!

Brush up your finance concepts specially valuations.

According to me, my stress interview went well mostly because I was not nervous, calm and indifferent to the
end result.
A confident demeanor, logical thinking, consistent answers and excellent communication skills with thorough
knowledge of your CV should get one thorough.

Group Discussion- Do not make it a fish market.

Interview- Make sure your energy level is high.

They give preparatory material beforehand. Go through it properly. Lear a lot about AdWords and its
application. Show structure in your approach. Be confident.

you will be given ample time to think over the questions and it is easy going. Be relaxed.

Do not panic. Just relax and answer all the questions patiently. They are looking for people who can think out
loud, answer coherently with clarity and confidence. Basic knowledge of Google's advertising products
(especially AdWords) is a must (a decent reading of their AdWords page will do).

Just go with a clear head. No need to panic.

Being thorough with the CV is very important.

The interviewers have a lot of patience and time. So don't be in a hurry!
Know about the role and company well.

Some of the questions were asked repeatedly in different rounds. They were doing consistency check i.e. the
answers for the same questions must be same with different panels because they noted down everything
and passed the feedback to next panel. The first question tell me about yourself is very important as it can
decide the direction of your interview. Therefore, it must be prepared well and preferably something other
than CV must be the answer of this question.

Read about E - commerce inside out and practice guesstimate.

Research about the company, be thorough about your CV, management concepts and just answer
confidently and articulate well.

Be confident.

Be ready to face initial stress part and be honest with your answers, don't bluff.

Please prepare you HR really well. Instead of using adjectives to describe your self use life situations or
examples to explain. Know the industry in depth and bookish knowledge is not that much required in the
interviews. Yes also practice some puzzles, guesstimates. As these are asked not only in Consulting but in
many companies.
