TETRA MISSION CRITICAL SOLUTIONS

CSFT438
DIGITAL FREQUENCY SHIFTING REPEATER
Large outdoor coverage footprint due to high gain and output
power
Extensive remote control and supervision capabilities
Software Defined Radio technology gives low delay and
high selectivity
Time slot based Automatic Level Control eliminates nearfar effects
Frequency Shifting technology allows very high gain with low antenna
isolation
The frequency shifting TETRA repeater can provide a much large coverage compared to a conventional
repeater. This is due to the reduced antenna isolation requirements, which allow higher gain and
consequently higher output power from the repeater.
The CSFT438 is primarily intended for rural area applications, where the terrain conditions normally would
require a large number of base station sites for seamless coverage. The frequency shifting concept is based
on a donor unit CSFT438D, placed near the base station, which connects to the remote unit CSR438R over
the air using free channels within the operational frequency band.
The CSFT438 can distribute 2 or 4 channels from the selected donor base station. The donor unit
CSFT438D can be physically connected to the base station transmit and receive ports through directional
couplers. Both the donor and the remote unit can be remotely controlled and supervised via a built-in
wireless modem.

Axell 3178B
700/800 MHz RF MID-POWER BI-DIRECTIONAL AMPLIFIER
Band selective, mid-power BDA for public safety,
In-building and outdoor networks
Dual-band 700/800 MHz in a single unit
Composite power +31dBm
RF SAW filtering
Small footprint and lightweight for easy maintenance

The Axell 3178B is a dual-band 700/800 MHz band selective mid-power bi-directional amplifier in a single
compact unit.
Specially designed for public safety in-door and outdoor networks, the Axell 3178B small footprint and
flexible installation options minimize interference with operations on the floor on which it is installed.
The uplink and downlink path gains can be manually adjusted over a 30dB range. Each path has an AGC
circuit which limits the output power to prevent unwanted signal distortion. A LED indicates when the AGC
limit has been reached.
It can be installed in a rack, mounted on a wall or on the ceiling. Its relatively low weight which allows
mounting and maintenance by a single person, in addition to the simple commissioning procedure that does
not require a high level technician, provides significant savings on labor costs.
The Axell 3178B supports remote monitoring. This is implemented by connecting an external dialer
(purchased separately) to dry contact alarms located on the unit external panel. The efficient thermal design
of the Axell 3178B, careful component selection and robust design provides a reliable, cost-effective system
for public-safety in-building or outdoor coverage.

in time delay and filter slope; this gives the engineer the unique ability to trade off the adjacent channel
rejection and time delay interference for the coverage area permitting the use of the Axell 4078D in
applications where no other booster solution will work.
Every parameter of Axell 4078D including filter tuning and selection is software controlled either locally or
remotely via a wireless modem. The control software is the Axell Wireless intuitive and user friendly Remote
Management Tool, which is provided with every unit.
The patented Axell Wireless digital RF filter not only enables simple initial setup for any channel plan, but if
necessary even permits a simple reconfiguration because of rebanding.
The booster protects against degradation of the systems sensitivity and coverage thanks to the inbuilt AGC
per-channel feature, which permits equalization of the channel levels for uniform coverage and will
selectively squelch nearby, high power mobiles.
With the new IP65 box, the Axell 4078D can easily be used in both indoor and outdoor applications.

The Axell 2408 is a cellular band selective mini repeater. The Axell 2408 supports mixed mode
transmissions (e.g. GSM and UMTS or CDMA and EVDO) to support simultaneous voice and data.
The Axell 2408 is available as either extended A (A, A and A) or extended B (B and B). This ensures
maximum call quality and will support legacy services. Separate IF-SAW filters ensure rejection of the other
band. Either option is also capable of supporting the full cellular band. The Axell 2408 includes Axell
Wireless proprietary SmartALC power control algorithm. SmartALC is more than simple gain control; it
automatically optimizes the gain setting by learning the actual range of RSSI levels over a user specified
period of time.
SmartALC prevents oscillations, reduces the amount of isolation required by the system and optimizes the
system to minimize noise rise at the donor cell site.
SmartALC allows the installer to quickly set up the unit, yet still achieve the design goals specified by the
system engineer.
The Axell 2408 features three tri-color front panel LEDs that provide ongoing status and alarm indication. In
addition, the DL LED can be used during setup as an RSSI level indicator to help align the donor antenna
for optimal performance.
The efficient thermal characteristics of the Axell 2408, careful component selection and robust design result
in high system reliability.

800MHz AND 1900MHz DUAL-BAND RF REPEATER
Small footprint single unit, band selective repeater for both Cellular
and PCS networks
Switchable bandwidth option user-selectable and tunable
across both bands
IF-SAW filtering-tunable sharp out-of-band rejection
SmartALC technology
Prevents oscillations and balances coverage
Automatically sets optimum gain
Ensures transparent network operation
The Axell 819 is a band selective repeater that supports both cellular and PCS bands. It is specifically
designed for simultaneous two-band operation of cellular 800 MHz and PCS 1900 MHz in a single, costeffective, space-saving wall unit.
The Axell 819 has switchable and tunable IF-SAW filters that allow for very high out of-band-rejection, as
well as provide a simple means to adjust the pass band according to network band allocation.
The unit is reconfigured with possible PCS frequency blocks of 5, 10, 15 or 20 MHz. One of the three blocks
is selected by the user and tuned to the desired frequency during setup. In the cellular band it is possible to
select one state out of two possible options which cover the cellular band options. Independent tuning and
retuning or activation and deactivation of the block filters can be controlled with both a local and remote
control system. With this flexibility in the cellular and PCS bands, the Axell 819 can accommodate the
frequency block configuration in most US markets and can be easily reconfigured if the local cellular or PCS
band plan changes.
The Axell 819 includes Axell Wireless proprietary SmartALC power control algorithm. SmartALC is more
than simple gain control it automatically optimizes the gain setting by learning the actual range of RSSI
levels over a user-specified period of time.
SmartALC prevents oscillations, reduces the amount of isolation required by the system and optimizes the
system to minimize noise rise at the donor cell site. SmartALC allows the installer to quickly set up the unit,
yet still achieve the design goals specified by the system engineer.
The Axell 819 panel LEDs, in addition to providing ongoing status and alarm indication, can be used during
setup as an RSSI level indicator to help align the donor antenna to the donor cell site. Axell 819 supports
intuitive web management GUI that can be accessed using any standard browser through a local or remote
connection (no client installation required).
Axell 819 remote monitoring and control is implemented by an integrated wireless modem and a controller
supporting SNMP.

MULTI-BAND COVERAGE SOLUTIONS

D-MBR - Americas
DIGITAL MULTI-BAND REPEATER
Designed to meet North American frequency requirements
Up to four frequency bands in one compact enclosure
Software Defined Filtering of up to 12 sub-bands in each frequency band
Band modules for 700MHz (LTE), 850MHz (Cellular), 1700MHz (AWS) and 1900MHz (PCS)
Individual gain and ALC settings for each sub-band for single and multi-operator applications
Ideal for flexible In-building applications
Complies with TS 36.106 (LTE) and TS 25.106 (WCDMA) standards
Supports 700MHz upper and lower bands simultaneously
The new Digital Multi-Band Repeater (D-MBR) from Axell Wireless is a flexible, multi-band coverage solution
optimized for in-building applications. The D-MBR is based on the Axell Wireless innovative digital filtering
technology which support current and future frequency allocation. Up to four different frequency bands can be
implemented in one repeater casing. The solution can be equipped with modules covering the 700MHz, 850MHz,
1700MHz and 1900MHz bands. For each of these frequency bands, the D-MBR can provide selection and
amplification of up to 12 sub bands of programmable bandwidth with the new software defined filtering module.
Using an advanced ALC mechanism each one of the sub bands has an individual gain and ALC setting.
The Digital Mulitband repeater has a separate module for each frequency band. This architecture allows
redundancy, i.e. failure in one of the band modules will not have any impact on the other band modules.
Dedicated DSP per band allows the support of full bandwidth for each band without any limitation. The D-MBR is
connected to one donor antenna placed on the roof of a building and the radiating coaxial cable or antennas in
the area to be covered. Configuration and monitoring of the D-MBR can be done through an intuitive web
management GUI, either locally or remotely via a wireless modem. With the Axell Wireless advanced supervision
and control software, the entire fleet of digital multi-band repeaters can be monitored.

Fiber Fed (Public Safety and Commercial)

OMU

Optical Master Unit

The Optical Master Unit (OMU) is used to convert
signals from RF to light when fiber fed repeaters are
used. The OMU is most often connected to a base
station. In these cases, an RF coupler is used to
couple off signals that are fed into the OMU.
An entry shelf unit can also be used in cases when the base station and the OMU are not located close to
each other. In the downlink direction, the OMU picks up the signal from the base station, converts it into an
optical signal and transfers it over a fiber optical cable to the repeater. In the uplink direction the OMU
receives the signal from the repeater via the fiber optical cable, converts it to a RF signal and sends it back
to the base station.

AUTOMATIC OPTICAL GAIN SETTING

The fiber optic system Axell Wireless has designed puts a clear focus on user friendliness and ease of
installation and commissioning. Through an automatic optical gain setting, the commissioning is easily
performed, thus reducing the time it takes to put the equipment in service. This also means that the training
is significantly simplified and the need for installation effort is decreased.

RELIABILITY IN SECURITY NETWORKS

TETRA is often used in security critical applications and Axell Wireless has therefore made reliability and
redundancy a key element in its design of fiber optic systems. By using what is often referred to as a star
typology, each remote unit has its own direct fiber connection to the OMU. One dedicated single fiber,
carrying both UL and DL signals (WDM or Wavelength Division Multiplexing technology), is then used to
serve each remote unit. Although it is preferable to use this type of configuration, a chain configuration
where the signal in the DL is coupled off to several remote units is also possible to realize when there is a
shortage of fiber.

EXPANDABLE SOLUTION
Each OMU can be equipped with up to six optical modules and therefore support up to six fiber-fed remote
units. If additional repeaters are to be fed from the same base station, it is simple to expand the system with
additional OMU units that in total will support up to 24 fiber-fed remote units.

REMOTE SUPERVISION
Only one modem is needed to communicate with an OMU and its fiber fed repeaters. The modem types
available are GSM, PSTN, TCP/IP and even GSM-R. The modem is found inside the OMU and
communication with the fiber fed remote units is transparently handled via the fiber that connects them. The
system can be managed via the Axell Wireless Repeater supervision and remote control software tool, AEM
(Axell Wireless Element Manager). All communication between the OMU and the repeaters both data
communication and the transferred RF signal is managed over the same fiber link, which results in a very
reliable supervision of the radio link.
The OMU supports VHF, TETRA, TETRAPOL, GSM-R, UMTS and GSM900, GSM1800 ,1900MHz and
2600MHz frequency bands and is always used in combination with one or several fiber fed repeater(s).

UHF FIBER FED REPEATER

BSF424
FIBER OPTIC REPEATER
Supports the use of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)
technology resulting in a limited need for fibers.
Remote supervision and alarm handling in the BSF424 is
realized through the fiber connection via the OMU units
modem or optional via built in modem
The unique combination of high output power and highly
linear power amplifiers ensures large coverage with
uniformly excellent signal quality
The BSF424 can optionally be upgraded with a second
optical transceiver module for redundant fiber applications

The BSF424 is a fiber optic fed UHF repeater. The repeater is part of a system that is fed from an Optical
Master Unit (OMU). The maximum optical loss allowed for is 10 dB of fiber between the OMU and the most
distant last remote unit that the OMU supports. This offers great flexibility when providing RF coverage in
areas where it is not possible to rely on off air transmission. The fiber optic system is easily remotely
monitored and controlled by Axell Wireless effective supervision tool, Axell Wireless Element Manager.

AUTOMATIC OPTICAL GAIN SETTING

The optical gain is adjusted in the downlink chain by measuring the level of the pilot carrier sent from the
OMU. The level of the received pilot carrier is continuously monitored.

NETWORK MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL

RMC and AEM

Complete Network Management
Axell Wireless supplies two powerful software tools - RMC and
AEM - for the configuration and management of repeaters either
singly or in networks. Both applications are Windows based
and run on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. The AEM can also
be run on Windows 2003 Server.

RMC Repeater Maintenance Console

The RMC is a software tool designed to support on-line communication with repeaters, simplifying their
installation and control. The tool is used primarily at commissioning of repeaters on site, but also as a tool
for on-line monitoring and trouble shooting of repeaters.
All repeater parameters can be displayed through a userfriendly graphical interface and all settings in the repeater
can be made via the RMC. Dynamic information, such as
traffic utilization, input and output power levels are updated
continuously which makes the RMC an excellent help for
example at antenna installations and other adjustments in
the system.
The RMC communicates with one repeater at a time,
either via a RS232 interface directly into the repeater or via
remote access via modem. All repeater parameters can be
displayed and all settings in the repeater can be made via
the RMC. Dynamic information, such as traffic utilization, input and output power levels are updated
continuously which makes the RMC an excellent help for example at antenna installations and other
adjustments in the system.
User friendly Windows based interface
Provides an online status report of the repeater configurations
Excellent for troubleshooting applications
Configurations can be adjusted on a site-by-site basis.
Traffic monitoring via the RMC, the repeater firmware is automatically updated to the latest
version in use.

AEM Axell Element Manager

Central Management
All repeaters in a network can be managed from a central location;
parameters can be read, alarms monitored and configuration changes made.

Network Optimization
The AEM can be used as a tool for network optimization; repeater traffic reports are stored in a database
where they can be interrogated to optimize the network based on utilization statistics.

Excellent Overview
The network elements can be presented either on geographical maps or in logical tree structures where the
relationship between network elements are made clear which can be a valuable tool when it comes to
network planning and troubleshooting
The AEM is a complete operations and maintenance software application designed to supervise and control
repeater networks. It is an advanced yet user-friendly application that gives easy access to all information
about a network. Each repeater or element can be monitored separately or the whole network can be
presented in one overview chart.
The network elements can be assigned to geographical maps to further enhance the overview of the
installation. A logical tree shows the relationship and hierarchical build-up between the network elements this includes both base stations and repeaters. Alarm sources indicate if faults have occurred in any of the
repeaters and an extensive reporting tool enable optimized planning of the networks coverage.
A repeater can be fully monitored and controlled via the AEM. In the status
window parameters such as channel numbers, uplink and downlink peak
power, status of different repeater parameters, external alarms, etc. are
displayed.
Other windows display hardware configuration, alarm log, sent messages
log, traffic and heartbeat log.
A network is configured by adding repeaters to it, placing them on a
geographical or logical map and also placing them structurally in the system
and finally by configuring the AEM repeaters settings.
These settings are phone numbers, report intervals, etc. Base stations can
also be included in the network. They can be configured geographically and
structurally in the AEM, but need no other configuration.
