The Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center is a medium security prison located in Avenel
New Jersey, part of Middlesex County. The center is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment
of sex offenders in the state. There are approximately 700 adult male inmates with a
repetitive sex offender status. There are 51% white, 16.1% blacks, 22.4% Hispanic, 8.9% Asian,
and 0.1% Native Indian. Each student cost about $19,180. Albert C. Wagner Youth Correctional
Facility is a medium security prison. It is 589 acres, of which approximately 450 acres are
cultivated for the New Jersey Department of Corrections Farm Operation. There are about
23,123 inmates. 61% are black, 23% are white, 16% are Hispanic, and 1% is Asian. It costs
about 20,000 per inmate. Bayside State Prison is located on approximately 1,148 acres of woods
and farmland in rural South Jersey, approximately 17 miles south of Vineland/Millville. It
contains about 21,000 inmates. Each inmate cost roughly $25,000. 66% is black, 19% is white,
and 15% is Hispanic. The Central Reception and Assignment Facility serves as a central
processing unit for all adult males sentenced to the New Jersey Department of Corrections. The
facility is responsible for the examinations as well as medical, dental, educational and
psychological evaluations before objectively classifying all state-sentenced inmates. 62% of

inmates are black, 20% are white, and 17% are Hispanic and 2% for other. It costs $21,000 per
inmate for a year. East Jersey State Prison provides maximum, medium and minimum security
programs for adult male offenders. There are 1,227 inmates currently in the facility. The racial
statistic is 65% are blacks, 17% are whites, and 18% are Hispanics. It costs about $20,000 per
inmate. Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women contains state-sentenced female offenders.
The security consists of two compounds minimum and maximum/medium. The total
population of the prison is 709. 12.5% are Hispanics, 37.5% are blacks, 25% are whites, and
25% for other ethnicities. It costs a total of $223 per inmate. Garden State Youth Correctional
Facility contains minimum security located on institutional grounds. Inmates participate in a fullday program of work, vocational training or academic education. There are a total of 1,511
inmates. It costs about $12,000 per inmate. The Mid-State Correctional Facility is currently
closed for renovation. It is located at Fort Dix Army Base on 12.24 acres of State of New Jersey
property. The Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility is located on 747 acres of rolling hills in
Annandale. The facilitys close Custody Units are utilized for inmates who require temporary
maximum security status. The population of the facility is 808. 2% of inmates are in there for
homicide, 1% for sexual assault, 12% for assault, 22% for robbery, 13% for property, 5% for
public policy, 21% for weapons, and 22% for drugs. The New Jersey State Prison is one of the
oldest correctional facilities in the United States. Its the states only maximum security
institution, housing the most difficult and or dangerous offenders in the inmate population. There
are about 1,620 inmates in the prison. The Northern State Prison is located on 43 acres in
Newark, houses a diverse offender population classified as General Population, Special Needs,
and Administrative Close Supervision Unit. The facility contains 2,463 inmates. South Woods
State Prison is located on 85 acres in Bridgeton, is the states newest prison and the facility with

the largest inmate population. The prison complex consists of three medium custody housing
facilities and a minimum custody housing unit. The population of the prison is 3,327 inmates.
The Southern State Correctional Facility is located on 77 acres in southern Cumberland County,
adjacent to Bayside State Prison. The population is 1,882 inmates. 65% are blacks, 19% are
white, and 12% are Hispanic.
