accomplishments The boys finished 4th in the Big North

and 7th in the Division 2 regional meet. The girls were 2nd in the
Big North with Analynne Klotz, Shannon Metzger, Brittany Smith
and Haley Smith earning all-conference honors. The team finished 4th in regional with Klotz and Metzger advancing as individual runners to the state finals.
returnees On the boys team seniors Kyle Pike and Jered
Holland are back to lead the team. Returning juniors are Evan
Chilcote, Timothy Coffey, Conner Jackson, Rhys Seward and
Devin Taylor. Sophomores Mathew Brines, Timothy Carlington,
Brandon Eller, Zach Elmore, Grant Fiet and Brendan Hambright
are back. For the girls returning seniors are Kate Buckmaster, Paige
Fiet, Jessica Geeseman, Abby Hearth, Savana Holmes, Madison
Lux, Brittney Smith and Haylea Smith. Returning juniors are Brooke
Costillo, Abby Croskey, Mackenzie Crozier, Caitlin Dietlin, Mary Erickson, Rachel Green, Analynne Klotz, Shannon Metzger, Carissa
Mitchell, Makayla McQueer, Darcy Naugle, Emily Smith, Haley
Swiger and Haley Willis. Returning sophomores are Brittany Byers,
Brittany Cunningham, Erika Peterson, Kendra Phillips, Shayanna
Rossell and Abby Wetherell.
newcomers New runners for the boys are Jared Andersen,
Justin Andersen, Abraham Apfel, Erik Awwad, Tucker Bachman,
Nick Catlin, Zachary Felber, Joshua Jacobson, Maxwell Reaume,
Brendan Shanahan, Derek Tonello, Deion Vo and Alex Whipple.
On the girls side, new runners are Raphaelle Airault, Amber Awwad, Corra Barnard, Merrill Campo, Samantha Carrancho, Maria Francisco, Renaye Greenwood, Jordan Healey, Susie Huckle,
Kassidy Jackson, Emma Lloyd, Kayla Logan, Emma Lloyd, Gabrielle Metzger, Lina Meyjes, Elizabeth Parker and Miranda Richardson.
strengths The boys teams return 6 varsity runners and the

overall numbers are up from last years team. The top 3 runners
last year were freshmen and return with a year of experience. The
team is deeper in talent this year with more competition for the
seven varsity positions. We are working on improving the finishing
position of our number 4-7 runners. The number of athletes out for
the girls team is also up again this year. For the second year in a
row, only one varsity runner is not returning due to graduation.
The team is mature and experienced, and knows how to race
to win. Newcomers to the program are also showing the ability
to compete for varsity positions. With their positive attitude, summer training and high expectations, the girls should be successful
at all invitational races, in the Big North Conference and at the
regional meet.
working on Every year, returning runners are given a goal
to increase their base and endurance from previous years. It is expected the athletes conditioning has been stepped up from the
previous year. We are placing more emphasis on core strength
exercises to prevent injury and increase their stamina at the end
of races. Later in the season, the team will focus more on speed
training. With the large amount of newcomers coming in we are
also working on establishing strong relationships that are needed
for any team to succeed.
conference Every year, do not look beyond the next upcoming meet or make predictions. The 2016 boys and girls team
will train and compete hard to win the conference meets and
the conference title.
goals The goals going into the season for both teams are to
win the conference title and advance out of regionals, and then
have the chance to compete for the State D2 Championships
in November. Constant improvement, good health, team spirit,
and many other attributes will lead to a winning and successful
season.

strengths We have some very strong hitters and

that we are in constant motion on the floor, moving with the

style Our team will be working on really running their
offense all the way through. We have several girls that are
not only great hitters, but are great defensive passers as
well. The 6-2 offense we use will help us to utilize our hitters
and passers to the greatest capacity for a strong attack.
goals I expect our team will have a great season.
We have a lot of girls returning this year. I can already see
improvement over last season. We have a very cohesive
group of girls and I expect they will really work well together
on the floor. In practices they are constantly motivating
each other to do their best, cheering each other on, and
pushing each other harder. I am looking forward to not only
a successful season, but a truly fun season as well!

accomplishments MHSAA regional dhampions and finished 7th at the State Finals.
returnees The girls team is returning five of our top seven
runners from last season Ashley Parker, Tori Moffit, Angelica
Parker, Grace Musselman, Autumn Tuck, and Autumn Federowicz. Abby Kongeal, Hannah Morrow and Isabella Bivens are all
great hard-working runners and are not only a joy to be around
also but a big impact on our team.
newcomers Freshman Paige Swiriduk is entering this season with the highest mileage total on the team and will be jumping into the mix for us right away. Keep an eye on fellow freshmen
and hurdling standout, Abbie Powell. Although she is not currently
known as a distance runner, she will be.
strengths These girls enjoy lots of different activities and
word hard at everything they do. Most are as comfortable in the
weight room or the basketball court as they are on a cross country
course. Expect to see strong and powerful out on the course.
working on Most people think that a 5k is a distance event
but they are mistaken. A 5k is a middle distance event and it should
be ran aggressively. Expect to see that from our girls.
style Run fast and caring about each person.
conference It will be a battle between Manton, McBain,
and Beal City. However, its the Highland Conference and every
team has the potential to come out of nowhere and take the
conference.
goals First and most importantly, to have fun while working
hard. But our other goals include; to win the Highland Conference, to win our regional finals and place in the top 5 at the
MHSAA State Finals.

returnees Last years team leaders were Zach Flint and conference Evart has been untouchable in the Highland

Brock Wright who are both returning this fall. In just his second
year of cross country Treh Helsel appears primed for an outstanding season. Last years surprise, Collin Carter, is also returning with
many more summer miles. Rounding out our returners is Noah
Saylor. Although Noah hasnt earned his varsity letter yet, he continues to make large improvements which is very important for
both him and his teammates.
newcomers This is the largest incoming group of freshmen boys Ive ever had and they are all great kids. They work
hard and are a lot of fun to be around. They bring much more
to the team than just their running. Their energy and excitement
is contagious and will be central to the entire teams success this
year. Isaac Raden, Hunter Clark, Conner and Cayden McGrew,
Jeremiah Tuck, Jesse Geary are all good enough to walk on and
be solid varsity runners. With the addition of upper classmen; Darren Kozlowski, Josh and Jacob Cergnul, and sophomore Austin
Sharphorn this is going to be one of the best years ever for Manton Cross Country.
strengths Competitiveness. It doesnt matter what we are
doing in practice, these boys want to win.

Conference for the past several years. Evarts program isnt going away but this group of young men might be the ones that
are able to knock Evart down a notch. With our large freshmen
class were going to be tough later in the season and also in the
upcoming years.
goals The No. 1 goal for our team is to have fun. I think its
important that everyone learns that running and exercise is fun
and should be considered a celebration. Far too many adults
view running as a punishment or something they have to do. No
athletic program will ever succeed in the long run until they realize this. That being said, we also want to win! Our boys team has
qualified for the MHSAA State Finals for four years in a row. We
hope to continue this legacy as well as add to it. We will be challenged by both Evart and Bear Lake, though.

strengths This group has been working hard. They stay in

compete for a district and conference title. As always, I measure
success by looking at growth of players--growth as soccer players, as young men, as a team, and as Christians. If we see that
growth, then we have had a successful season.

look forward to Kendra VanPolen taking care business in the
back row. Holly MacLean, Kaylie Benthem and Kalli Mosher
will really round out the strength of this senior class.
newcomers We have six new juniors this season and
they will certainly help to bring depth to our group. Madelyn Yount and Ellie Haan introduced themselves to varsity
competition during districts last season and they showed
they were more than ready to compete at that level. Maddie Lanser, setter, will show versatility and athleticism on the
court and spark a hard-working offense. Desiree Ebels, Olivia
Baas and Cami DeMott will be a big part of this team and
add excitement as well.

strong and be right there with even our toughest competition. Weve got some really solid hitting happening right now
and our passing is in good shape this early in the season.
These should make for some really exciting volleyball.

varsity will force us to focus on unity and cohesiveness. We
learned a lot of valuable ideas at team camp this summer
that I hope to put into practice as well.
style You will see a stronger and more efficient front row
than in the past couple of years and that will come from the
athletic ability that we have this year. I also think the heart
that these girls play with will make for quickness and agility
on defense as well.

returnees All of our athletes will be key players for us as we

have a team consisting of nine freshmen and very few upperclassmen. We will be looking for leadership from all of our returners.
Some standouts in the early going and in terms of leadership and
work ethic have been junior midfielders Seth Phelps and Hunter
Morrison, as well as FB/midfield sophomore Brandon Worth.
newcomers The future of our program will be determined
by the development of our freshman class who will learn the right
way to play and be battle tested against varsity-level competition.
I am excited about their attitude, talent and enthusiasm. Some
who have distinguished themselves in terms of work ethic, talent,
and attitude in the early going are freshmen Jacob Montoya,
Dylan Brock, Kameron Horchnor, Josh Hamilton and Ty Brocker.
strengths I feel like there is a good energy and enthusiasm
heading into the season. The coaching staff is well prepared and

the kids are intelligent and hard working. We should also have
good team fitness entering the season.
working on We have a very young team and will focus
on learning how to play the game correctly at the high school
level. Our team motto is DO IT RIGHT. We will focus on doing the
right things in the right way. With hard work and this focus, things
like wins, titles and individual honors will take care of themselves.
The focus will be on learning to perform fundamentals under increasing pressure in terms of time and opposition.
goals As a coaching staff, our goal is to extract as close to
maximum effort from each athlete as possible in practices and
matches. If we can do that we feel like we have accomplished
our goal. We will encourage our athletes to view practices and
matches in the same light. To give maximum effort and to encourage their teammates to do the same, concentrating on the
things that they have control over, so that win, lose, or draw we
can fell good about or selves and teammates.
