Air pollution kills

Air pollution is a matter of serious concern in Bangladesh. As per a World Bank study, 15000 deaths (5000 in
Dhaka) and a million cases of illness requiring medical treatment can be avoided annually if the air pollution
level can be reduced. The same report estimates that Bangladesh could save between USD 200 to 800 million
per year if air pollution in the country's four major cities was reduced.
Faulty vehicles, brick kilns and power plants are the main sources of smoke which causes pollution. Besides,
smoking and using vinyl floor tiles or vinyl building siding, trim and windows put workers' health at risk
during and after production. Alternatives must be used to avoid danger from these materials.

Limiting children's screen time

It is becoming increasingly harder for parents to control their children's screen time which includes watching
television, using internet and other electronic devices such as mobile phones and tablets.
According to a study, children all over the world, on an average, spend more than seven hours a day in front of
the screen. They watch videos and movies, do facebook and play games on the internet. It is extremely
worrisome that some games have indecent and objectionable contents which can make kids violent and
aggressive. On the other hand, playing outdoor games helps children build good health and character.
When parents limit the screen time of their children, they get more time to interact with parents and friends,
sleep and play outdoors. Real life relationships are more important than spending time on the social media.
Make sure that you spend enough quality time with your kids.

An appeal to the government

We humbly request the concerned authorities to reconsider the decision of relocating shops, restaurants,
educational institutions and other business entities at Dhanmondi, Gulshan and other areas. Numerous people
will be affected by this decision financially. For the sake of their families, please let these businesses,
organisations and institutions continue to operate. And from now on, please do not allow people to open
business in residential areas.

Preventing fire
Prevention is better than cure. All multi-storied office/residential buildings and shopping malls should take a
lesson from the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex fire incidents and adopt the following safety measures:
1. All multi-storied public buildings must be declared as non-smoking zone. This has to be rigidly enforced.
2. Such buildings must have a full-time, round the clock trained team of firemen equipped with at least eight
foam extinguishers.
3. Everyone must be very careful while dealing with electricity or stoveanything that can start a fire.
