Description of Activities and Setting

Time

1. Focus and Review

The focus of this lesson will be on vocabulary.

However, instead of a traditional lesson, there will
be other student skills involved in completing the
tasks given by the teacher.

5 min

2. Statement of
Objective for Student

Today you will be given vocabulary words to find in

the text, use context clues to find out what they
mean, analyze the words deeply and write about
another way or circumstance these words could be
used.

2 min

3. Teacher Input

Boys and girls, today we will be working on

vocabulary. I know we have covered vocabulary
before, but today we are going to change it up a bit!
I am going to give you some vocabulary words and
I am going to send you to search for them in your
books. Once you find them, you will use context
clues to find out what they mean, analyze each

10 min

word, and then write about another scenario that

this word could be used in. Let me show you how
to do this.
4. Guided Practice

Lets say my vocabulary word is hail. I know I have

heard this word before, but I am going to follow
these instructions and do some investigating. The
teacher reads the following article excerpt aloud to
the class:

10 min

But then I banish these devilish notions, and run

across fields shrieking: All hail the royal baby, for
we are mere lice upon the most rabid of mangy
hounds compared with thee.
Okay, so I have spotted my word that I am looking
for -- the word hail. Watch as I use my context
clues to discover what this vocabulary word means.
Teacher demonstrates how to use context clues to
find the meaning of the word hail. Now that I know
hail means to praise or express gratitude, I will
create another sentence that I could use the word
hail in.
Students help teacher to write the following
sentence: All hail my hard working students, who
are all so smart and committed to learning.
5. Independent Practice

Students will do the same activity the teacher

monitored for them, searching for three vocabulary
words to analyze. After finding the words and
discovering their meaning, they write a sentence
for an alternative use for each word and submit.

25 min

6. Assessment Methods
of all objectives/skills:

Students will be expected to earn 8/10 points to show mastery. To

earn 4/10 points, students will only analyze and reapply 1
vocabulary word. To earn 6/10 points, students will analyze and
reapply 2 vocabulary words. To earn 8/10 points, students will
analyze and reapply all three given vocabulary words. The two
extra points to receive 10/10 will be given due to detail and
accuracy of analyzation and reapplying the words.

7. Closure

Now that we have set up vocabulary investigations,

we can continue this practice throughout the year. I
am so glad we all worked so hard to analyze and

5 min

reapply these vocabulary words!

Reflection on lesson: ***This is not a lesson I taught. This was the correlation for my 1st grade
vocabulary lesson plan.*** The students responded very well and I enjoyed teaching
vocabulary! I was nervous to teach in the beginning, but it ended up being surprisingly fun. I
enjoy the enthusiasm first grade students have for learning and I enjoyed making it fun. My
teacher gave me positive feedback, which made me feel very good. I very much enjoyed the
lesson I taught but would also enjoy teaching a more rigorous lesson, such as the one I wrote.
The results for my lesson were as follows: 10/10 10 students. 8/10 3 students. 6/10 2
students. 4/10 points 1 student. As a result of my teaching, my students learned how to
identify vocabulary words and apply them in sentences. This was my intention. Changes that
may have helped improve this activity were more time for the lesson, my time was kind of cut
short.
