actslikeglue.Thisonecomesoutataslightangle.Removeitslowlyandgently
becausethefanpowercableisstillattachedtothemotherboardandneedsto
beremovedbeforetheunitwillcomeoutcompletely.

v4.44.Thentotakethelaptopapartagain,cleanitup,usingthesuggested
alcoholwipesmethod,andreplacethethermalcompound.ThistimeIwoulduse
athinamount.Iwouldthanassembleeverythingandthenmonitorthe
temperatureagain.Ifollowedthesameprocessasbeforewiththeslight
suggestedchanges.Thisdocumentsthatprocess.
AccordingtotheCPUchipspecificationsforaLF80537T5500,whichisaIntel
Core2DuoMobile,theMinimum/Maximumoperatingtemperature(C)is0
100C.ThemaximumoperatingtemperatureoftheCPUwas65CbeforeI
startedthisprocess.AfterIcompletedtheprocessthemaximumoperating
temperaturewas60C.ItseemsImighthaveappliedtoomuchthermal
compoundbutnotwaytoomuchtocauseoverheating.Justtoomuchasin
wastage.Itwouldseemasifexcessiveamountsofthermalcompoundcould
causeyoursystemtoheatupslightlymoreandifitisrunningclosetothe
maximumallowedtemperatureitmightcauseoverheating.Itcauseda5C
increaseintemperatureinmycasebutthisisnotdefinitebecauseitwasnota
controlledsituation.Theincreasewasnotenoughtocauseoverheating,but
enoughtodeducethatexcessiveamountsofthermalpastecouldincreasethe
temperature.ThephotoscontainastepbystepguideofwhatIdid.

Ifoundthealcoholwipesworkedterrible.Itsmearedthethermalgreaseallover
andjustcreatedabiggermesstoclean.Itcouldbebecausetheprevious
thermalgreasewasaldriedoutandflakedoffnicely.Thisthermalgreasewas
wetandsticky.Itsmearedtooeasily.OntheGPUthereareverysmallresistors
orcomponentsandthewipessmearedthethermalgreasealloverthemand
thenkeptgettingcaughtinthem.
IfIweretodothisinstructablefromthestartoveragain,Iwoulduseless
thermalgreasefromthestartasitdoesmakeadifferencenomatterhowslight,
butIwouldnotusethealcoholwipe.

IhavebeenrippingIntelCPUsoutoflaptopsanddesktopsandreplacingthe
thermalcompound(grease)foryearsnowandhavenoticedthatontheolder
IntelCPUsthethermalgreasewasusedliberally.However,onthenewerCPUs
thecompoundisquitethin.Iwonderifitreallymattersthatmuchorisitcost
savingtohaveaverysmall(tiny)amountofcompoundinbetweentheCPUand
thecooler(heatsink)?
HereiswhatIntelitselfsaysabouthowtoapplythermalgreasetoaCPU.What
youwillreadwillsurpriseyoubecausethereisnomentionoflayerthickness
andnomentionofspreadingitaround.Totellyouthetruthitstatesthatyou

missedthisonecompletely.Secondly,anoverheating
laptopwillnotcausethekeyboardkeystostick.It
normallydoesthereverseandmakesyourkeyboard
sluggishtorespond.Youcouldtrytocleanoutthe
keyboardbutIdoubtthatdust,dirt(orwhateverwas
messedonthekeyboard)willcauseEVERYkeyto
stickandrepeat.Normallywhenafewkeysstick(or
don'trespond)itsbecausetheyaredirty.Coffeeand
sodathatwasmessedonthekeyboard(evenjust
drops)normallycausethisbecauseofthesugarthey
contain.YoucouldtrypluggingandexternalUSB
keyboardin,toseeiftheproblemcontinues.Ifitdoes,
itsnotthekeyboard.Replacingthekeyboardisalso

Yes,Iknowwhatintelsays.Ifyounotice,thechiptheywere
usinginthatdemoisadesktopchipwithanintegratedheat
spreader.You,however,weregreasingalaptopchipwithouta

heatspreader,andwereusingplainsiliconegrease.(Whichis
probablythebestgreasetouseifyouaregoingtooverdoit,as
itwontshortoutthecapslikethesilverstuffwill.)Ifyouare
usingaheatspreadertheamountofthermalgreasecanbe
higher,duetothelargersurfaceareaoftheheatspreader.
Whenusingbarechipsitsbesttouseproportionallyless
greaseforthefactthatyouhavelesssurfacearea.(Basically
useagrainofriceworthofgreaseforbarechipsandapea
worthofgreaseforaheatspreaderchip.)

Yes,youarerightinthatIamusingplain,non
conductive,siliconegrease.Thiskindofgreasedoes
notshortoutcomponentslikeotherconductivegrease
does.SoevenifIdidoverdodoit,whicheveryone
seemstosuggestIdid,ithadverylittleimpactonthe
temperatureasIexplainedinoneofmyother
commentsaftertestsIdid.Thetemperaturedifference
wasactuallylessthanthetestsdonehere

Bytheway,youdon'tneedtospreadthepastemanually.Astheheatsink
goesbackintoitsplace,thepastewillflowintoasuitablepositionthat
workswell.Also,ifyouspreadtheparsemanually,youmayeventually
endupwithgapsbetweentheheatsinkandthepaste,whichyouwon't
wanttohave.

Again,30yearsofspreadingpasteonscoresofchips
hastaughtmetomakesureyougetthemaximum
contactbetweentheheatedandcoolingunits.Again,if
youcreateasmallareawithnopasteon,thepressure
appliedbytheretainingspringontheheatsinkshould
causethepastetospreadandcoveritasyouhave
alsosuggestedinyourcomment.

couldsolveyouroverheatingproblembyasimple
coolingpad.Overheatinghasmostlytodowithair
flow.Ifyouincreasetheairflowbynotblockingthe
vents(orenlargingthemwithatool),addingafan(like
acoolingpad),thenthelaststepwouldbereplacing
thethermalgreaseorotherextrememeasures.
