Freedom is essential to ones ability to think beyond constraints that extraneous thoughts

build upon us. We use freedom to exercise choices and decisions which is important for
ones own self learning. Freedom in terms of feminism can be seen in the form of Agency
which is a capacity by which a person acts to any given environment. The degree of that
agency does not matter when we see that a woman is engaged in a social structure and acts
within it. A Woman actively creates her own space that determines her identity in the social
setting. The best form of an approach we see when we consider women as social agents is
that they express their personal accounts, reinterpreting their past events which enables
women to mobilize creative power hence, reshape their ways of life and how they perceive
and act upon situations. Id like to include one of the most renowned feminist account called,
THAT LONG SILENCE by Sashi Deshpande; which portrays a deep seated sense of silence a
married woman feels in a marriage to an orthodox husband where the thoughts and feelings
of Jaya ( the wife) has been muted. She expresses her need to find herself and her own
ideals within what she had in the form of Marriage and Motherhood. A stream of
consciousness has been used by the author when a voice of a silenced Jaya has been heard
as a Female Protagonist. Several Incidents in the book shows the image of women as
meaningless construction in male imagination. Jaya Is a self proclaimed Failed writer since
she shows her dire need for self expression and she actively creates a space for it but her
construction is meaningless when the only person she can express them is herself. In a form
of casual reading, we come across the daily briefings of Jaya as nothing but general feeling
she feels about her life and a husband whos unconcerned about those thoughts. We dwell
deeper into her words and find that there are levels of conflicts and feelings that are in
waves and layers. It has to be peeled from within to find Jaya as one who is someone finding
her sense of oneself in stories of her husband (Mohan), her children (Rati and Rahul) and
her own conflicting identity which struggles to come out as an emancipated Jaya but also
stays within the shell that world has made for her. Jaya in her own totality is in pursuit of self
knowledge thus her words unite with her complex nature. The book is an opus to understand
not the struggles of a woman in a south Asian society but a way by which she finds her OWN
sense of freedom by knowing herself. When an agent (a woman) is actively engaging in self
recognition and the conflict between what she is and what she can be in the existing state of
affairs, she builds herself a sense of freedom to think beyond her frazzled, subjugated state
and come as someone with her own sense of identity. Freedom comes from within when we
bring about our own identity to the aspects of liberation that world defines for us. Women
retell stories and accounts to give us a different perspective to a usual one that has been
repeated for centuries.
