TruTrak Service
Maximize your drilling precision and efficiency

Pulser:
Transmits inclination,
azimuth, downhole
temperature, vibration
level, tool status flags
and FE data to the surface.
Turbine/alternator:
Provides electrical energy
from mud flow and receives
downlinks (steering
commands) from surface.
Integrated electronics
and hydraulics:
Processes azimuth and
inclination measurements
to automatically activate and
control the steering pads and
maintain the desired wellpath.

X-treme power section :

Provides superior cutting
power at the bit for enhanced
ROP. The power section
is available in low speed
(for special roller cone bit
applications) and high torque
versions (for roller cone and
PDC bit applications).

Drilling the well plan with maximum

precision and efficiency
Baker Hughes INTEQs TruTrakTM
automated directional drilling service
offers operators a precise, highly
efficient means for drilling low
inclination well profiles optimizing
gross penetration rates, while
significantly enhancing wellbore
quality and placement precision.
The integrated TruTrak system
combines field-proven, automated
steering control (as used in our
established VertiTrak and AutoTrak
systems), integrated directional MWD
and the industrys premier X-treme
motor technology; all to deliver
optimized wellpath control and
unmatched drilling efficiency.
Our modular design permits the
addition of further dynamics and
formation evaluation sensors if
required by the application.
Using a selection of steering
commands, the TruTrak system can:
Automatically maintain a
high-quality, vertical wellpath
Smoothly kick off from vertical
and build or drop angle with
variable steering force
Efficiently drill tangents in
automatic inclination hold mode
Precisely adjust steering forces
for smooth azimuth control in
the tangent section
Quickly retract steering ribs if
rotation is required (e.g., exiting
a casing shoe).

Steering unit:
Delivers continuous,
automated steering
for optimal wellbore
quality without ledges.

An integrated system design for maximized

drilling efficiency
The TruTrak system integrates several
leading INTEQ technologies into one
tool, including:
A proven steering head design delivering
superior directional control in vertical
and low-inclination wells, as well as
excellent reliability in hard formations
An X-treme power section for maximum
ROP with roller cone and PDC bits
The established AutoTrak 3-D pad
steering principles.

The TruTrak systems steering sub incorporates proven

technology from our established AutoTrak RCLS and
VertiTrak vertical drilling systems to maintain precise
wellpath control with superior hole quality and minimal
local doglegs.

TruTrak Service Benefits

Superior directional control

Enhanced drilling performance

The TruTrak system operates in a

sliding mode with the pads engaged
and bit rotation provided by our
proprietary X-treme power section.
Integrated, near-bit sensors measure
hole inclination and azimuth and
constantly transmit the data to the
surface. The TruTrak systems steerable
stabilizer uses three steering pads, each
capable of generating up to 1.3 tons
(2,600 lbs) of side force, keeping the
wellpath on target in vertical drilling
and tangent modes.

INTEQ engineers designed the TruTrak

system with a high performance power
section to drive the bit permitting it to
operate efficiently in sliding mode. And,
in order to best match the service to the
application, the TruTrak BHA can be
modified with optional power sections:

Whenever the systems near-bit MWD

sensors detect a deviation from the
desired wellpath, the control subs
internal hydraulics deliver the optimum
steering force to the three pads to
counteract any deviation tendencies
and steer the well back on
track regardless of formation dips.
During build and drop sections or
azimuth corrections, these pads can
generate turn rates of up to 3/100.
Closed-loop control provides continuous
course corrections, minimizing wellpath
tortuosity. This reduces torque and drag,
the likelihood of twist-off and stick/slip
problems. As a result, the TruTrak
service reduces both BHA and casing
wear throughout the wells life cycle.

INTEQs proprietary X-treme technology is key

to the systems added power (50% to 100%).
By reducing the stators elastomer content,
the TruTrak system delivers superior
mechanical and hydraulic efficiency.

X-treme HS high-speed power

section for impregnated bits in very
hard and abrasive formations
X-treme power section with high
torque/moderate speed for standard
roller cone and PDC bit applications
X-treme LS power section for extra
low-bit speed with high torque for
special roller cone bits.

The TruTrak service is capable of

delivering superior penetration rates
without string rotation due to our X-treme
power sections proprietary stator design.
By reducing the stators elastomer
content, the system delivers greater
mechanical and hydraulic efficiency,
while lowering friction and internal heat
build-up maximizing cutting power at
the bit and overall drilling performance.

The TruTrak service has proven a highly effective

means of delivering efficient drilling performance
on land-based drilling operations in both the US
and Canada.

TruTrak Service Applications

Applying the TruTrak service for

optimal drilling efficiency

Performance drilling
Quicker connections
Improved gross ROP

Drilling low inclination wells using

conventional directional motor
technology has often proved
challenging. Because there is low
friction between the BHA and the
borehole, it is often difficult and
time consuming to maintain stable
tool face orientation for consistent
directional control.

Drill low-inclination well profiles

Control wellpath precisely through
highly faulted and dipped formations
Extend rig capabilities
Less torque and drag in the hole
Minimize wear and tear on BHA
and drill string
Reduced to technical limit
Drill superior, in-gauge holes
Improved hole quality
Elimination of reaming runs
Simplified casing runs

To overcome this problem, the

kick-off point of J- or S-shaped wells
is usually planned to be deeper in the
well. The inclination of the tangent
section is deliberately increased and
tool face orientation becomes easier.

However, directional corrections are

still difficult and high local doglegs
are often created.
With the TruTrak service, steering
from vertical is not an issue.
The closed-loop pad steering
method is continuous, automatically
controlling and correcting well
inclination without sacrificing
optimum drilling parameters.
INTEQs TruTrak service delivers
precise, high-quality wellbores
more efficiently than conventional
directional drilling tools.

Enable lean casing profiles

Reduced hole sizes
Smaller casing sizes
in upper sections
Less cement

With the TruTrak service, operators

can adjust their well designs to:
Minimize measured depth to target
Reduce torque and drag
Lower bending fatigue of the drill string.
