In local news:
Kean University Suspicious Package
Students at Kean University had quite the scared over the weekend with reports of a
suspicious package in the area of Willis Hall. This all happened on Saturday afternoon around
1pm. Kean Universitys Police department took immediate action by redirecting vehicle and
pedestrian traffic and by sending out a campus alert. With the current bombs in Elizabeth,
Seaside and New York, Kean was not taking this lightly as the Union County Bomb Squad was
called out to inspect the package. At 2pm, another campus alert was sent stating the suspicious
package deemed safe by both the Kean Police Department and Union County Bomb Squad and
campus was safe and may resume to normal activity.
Roselle Police warn parents and students of several attempted kidnappings in the area. In
the last 3 days, two teenage girls have been targeted by what looks like the same individual in a
small SUV. Thursday, a 16-year-old was the target of a man in a silver SUV, possibly a Nissan
Rogue. The man drove up to the teen and grabbed her waist. Luckily she was able to break free.
Earlier in the week, a 12-year-old girl was targeted. This time her arm was grabbed by a man in a
similar SUV, again she was able to break free and ran away.
Anyone with information on either attack or the Caucasian male described as being
around 30, thin, with dark hair, driving a silver SUV in the area of West 7th street on Tuesday or
around 500 Walnut Street on Thursday is asked to call Roselle Detective Carmen Olivia at 908245-9200 or provide information on Facebook at RoselleNJpolice.
In National News:
President Obama facing issues within legislation
President Obama may see his first veto override in the legislation recently passed
unanimously by the House and Senate that would allow 9/11 families sue Saudi Arabia. The
Arab ally Saudi Arabia has previously been found liable because 15 terrorists involved in the
biggest terrorist attack on U.S. Soil are Saudi Arabian. Formerly known as the Justice Against
Sponsors of Terrorism Act, this bill would allow grieving families to use the court system to get
revenge. Obamas White House is strongly opposed to this bill, as it believes it could open the
U.S. to similar foreign lawsuits. While expressing sympathy for the families of 9/11, the Obama
administration believes this bill would allow different courts to come to different outcomes, and
that is not an effective way for the U.S. to respond.
The group representing the families of victims, known as the 9/11 Families and Survivors for
Justice Against Terrorism, were obviously very unhappy with the commander-in-chiefs decision
to veto this bill. Further complicating the issue is the fact that to avoid the override, President
Obama will need to convince 34 Senators (democrats) to his way of thinking, while presidential
candidate Hillary Clinton says she supports the bill.
In International News:
North and South Korea
The first big international test for the next president may come in the form of nations who
have warred for many years. North and South Korea are not allies and probably never will be.
However, surprisingly South Korean officials have disclosed that they have a plan to assassinate
Kim Jong Un in the event that they believe there is an eminent threat of North Koreas nuclear
weapons. South Korea has elite troops and could employ an operation including the assassination
of North Koreas controversial leader as well as missile strikes that would target specific
facilities. Since 2006, North Korea has been testing nuclear weapons, however, on September 9th,
2016 they tested a missile that incorporated a new type of engine that would enable it to be
intercontinental. This particular test was of a 10-kiloton weapon that could eliminate most of
South Korea, if not in the initial blast, then with the nuclear fallout. So, predictably South Korea
is concerned. Interestingly enough, according to North Korea, the U.S. is the one bringing the
region closer to another war. North Korea has accused the U.S. of violating the demilitarized
zone or DMZ that separates the North and South. This is a situation that bears watching.
