Delete Day

What is your overall opinion about Delete Day?

It is an important activity with direct impacts in the digital identity of the schools students.
Delete Day helped raise awareness about the consequences of ones actions on the internet.

If the event were to be held in your campus, what would sort of information would you
delete?
I`d probably delete old tweets, but overall I have been very conscious about the things I have
made public online so I wouldnt delete a lot of pictures or personal information.

Are schools morally or legally responsible for controlling the use of digital devices
among their students?
Schools are not legally liable for their students actions online; it is their own responsibility to
take care after their own digital identity. A school is not required to look after each of their
student`s posts. That being said the school`s morality might influence it towards informing their
students about the effects of inappropriate social-media use, as was the case with Delete Day.

Besides the ability to make a call from almost any location, what are some other benefits
that teens derive from their mobile phones?
The amount of information available at any moment, the ability to connect with other students to
do projects together.

What are the risks and benefits of having students bring their own devices to your
school? How do you minimize the risks and increase the benefits? Do the risks outweigh
the benefits, or vice versa?
The biggest disadvantage comes from the fact that the device might be used to aid in cheating
at an exam or to pass homeworks around. To minimize this, teacher should restrict the use of
cellphones whilst the class on an exam. The benefits of the internet far outweigh the risks, that
being said being aware of the negative impacts is key to minimize them.

In what positive ways are the Internet and electronic devices used in classrooms at your
school? On the other hand, what are the most common problems or complications
arising from this use?
The process of obtaining information is faster. The class turns out to be more dynamic. The
amount of resources on the web to aid in learning is great. The most common problem is
academic dishonesty and inappropriate usage during class.

If technology is not the problem and teen behavior with technology is, what behaviors
warrant the most attention? Where should you even start?

h
Cyberbullying is an important behavior that arises from improper usage of
technology and considering the impacts that it can cause (anxiety, depression,
suicide) it is a great start on the fight to stop improper usage.

Delete Day was an exercise implemented in The Mary Louis Academy that focuses
on creating awareness of the effects of students digital footprint. The hour-long
gathering had students delete inappropriate pictures and personal information off
their various social media. Overall Delete Day had direct effects with a high
percentage of the 250 attendees deleting some type of information, it was a
success.
The fact that the school took the time to organize such event shows its moral
standpoint towards the proper usage of its students` social media. It must be noted
that they are not required to carry out this exercises nor are they liable for their
students actions online. Still its nice that the school cares about their students
enough to inform them about consequences that affect their personal lives directly.
On my particular case, Im aware that our high school could benefit immensely from
an activity similar to Delete Day. Social-media is now-more-than-ever an important
part of our lives. I personally am very aware about my actions online and try to act
with integrity in most of my posts. Aside from some emotional tweets from years
ago there is not much I would delete. Most students wont relate with my
perspective though.
The impact of technology in education is broad and easily identified. Classes have
changed completely aiding themselves through the use of various media. (such as
PowerPoint presentations, Kahoots etc.) Classes are dynamic and the possibilities
are endless when it comes to applications of technology available. Connections
between students through the use of their cell phones and computers has allowed
better project quality and an easier work experience.
Several negative impacts exist when discussing the effects of technology in school.
Academic dishonesty becomes more common when schools allow cell phones.
Teachers must apply ant-cheating techniques to minimize this disadvantage.
Cyberbullying can also arise from improper social-media usage. This is an example
of a behavioral change due to technology. This should be a priority for teachers to
minimize as it is known to escalate quickly and consequences can be as severe as
suicide.
Overall technology has caused an inevitable change that has both a positive and
negative side to it. Actions such as Delete Day are helpful to try and minimize the
possible bad outcomes of technology.
