NOTETOAPPLICANTS
1. As per the UDA requirements it is necessary for corporate members of the Institution of
Engineers, Sri Lanka in the field of Civil Engineering to become eligible and register with
theInstitutiontocarryoutstructuraldesignsofbuildings.Interestedmembersshouldapply
toIESLusingthisapplicationform.

2. Pleasenotethatanapplicationwouldbe processedonlyifthememberhassettledhis/her
subscriptionfeesuptoandincludingtheyearhe/sherequestsregistrationfor.

3. NewapplicantsforanycategoryandapplicantsforupgradingshouldfillSectionIofthe
formandsubmittogetherwithaCVandpayanApplicationProcessingFeeofRs.1000.00.

4. Onceanapplicationisreceived,itwillbereferredtoapanelofseniorstructuralengineers
forevaluation.Thepanelwill,interalia,considerthefollowingcriteriawhenevaluatingthe
applicationforitssuitability.
a. Previous design experience in the category of buildings applied for: The Engineer
applying for more than 4 floors should have comprehensive experience of not less
thanoneyearandprovethathe/shehascarriedoutcompletedesignsofbuildingsin
the particular category applied for which should be certified by the supervising
engineer he/she has been trained by. The supervising engineer should be qualified
andregisteredintheparticularcategoryatleastforfour(4)years.
b. Degreeofresponsibilityandinvolvementinthedesignsdone
c. Employmentrecord
d. Knowledgeonengineeringfundamentals
e. Familiarity&useofcurrentdesigncodesincarryingoutdesignwork
f. Awareness of safety issues and measures needed, especially in excavations and
foundations
g. Basicapproachtofoundationdesign
h. Relevantpostgraduatequalifications,ifany
i. Willingnesstoseekadviceincaseofdoubtorunfamiliarity
j. Interestincontinuingprofessionaldevelopment
k. Sincerityandcommitmenttowardsthedesignsthatareundertakenwithanethical
approachandreluctancetotakerisksunknowingly
l. Basicknowledgeinservicesandanyotherrelevantexperience

5. If a member fails to provide all the information requested, the application is liable to get
rejected.

6. Ifthepaneldecidesthatitisnecessaryforfurtherevaluation,theapplicantwouldbecalled
foradiscussionwiththepanel.

7. After recommended by the panel, the successful applicants will be requested to pay the
Initial Registration Fee of Rs. 1500.00 after which they will be listed by the Institution as
eligibletocarryoutstructuraldesignofbuildingsintherespectivecategoriestheyqualified
andwillhavetheirnamesincludedintheDirectoryofStructuralEngineersfortheyearfor
whichtheapplicationsarebeingcalled.

8. ApplyingforLowRiseCategory:AnyCorporateMemberoftheInstitutioninthefieldof
Civil Engineering is permitted to carry out structural designs of buildings up to 4 floors.
SuchmembersifdesiredmayenlisttheirnamesintheLowRiseCategoryintheDirectory
by submitting this application form furnished together with stipulated Application
ProcessingFeeandlater,paytheInitialRegistrationFee.

9. ContinuationofregistrationintheDirectory:Ifthememberswishtocarryoutstructural
design of buildings in subsequent years they should continue their registration in the
DirectoryandbelistedinfuturedirectoriesbyfillingonlytheSectionIIgiveninthepage5
of this application form and submitting annually together with the payment of Rs. 1,500/
(peryear)astheFeeforContinuationofRegistration.(Itwillnotbenecessarytofillother
sectionsoftheformnorpaytheApplicationProcessingFeeandtheInitialRegistrationFee
forthispurpose).

10. Once registered, it is the applicant and not the organization he represents nor the
Institution, who will be personally responsible or liable for the designs and other
engineeringworktheapplicantauthorizesorcertifies.

Note:Itismandatoryforstructuralengineerstousethesealintheofficialcorrespondenceand
in certification of drawings. Seals will be issued by the Institution on request for a fee of Rs.
2,000/Thissealdoesnotbearanyexpirydate.Itistheresponsibilityofthemembernottouse
this seal if such member has failed to pay the current subscription and the registration fee as
stated earlier. A separate application form for seal (No: DESS/FO/10) is available at IESL
Secretariatandinthewebsite.
