PLGC II GAS CHROMATOGRAPH FOR

PIPELINE AND PROCESS APPLICATIONS
2
1

The PLGC II is a compact and low cost gas chromatograph equipped with a universal
thermal conductivity detector. The unit offers a wide range of applications where
hydrocarbon gas or fixed gas analysis is required, such as in BTU measurement for the
natural gas industry.

The PLGC II can be used in many measurement applications where an isothermal TCD
scheme is suitable. It is a fully automated system designed to perform on-line, real time
analysis. The Windows based configuration software allows the user to view most
recent or saved chromatograms as well as configure the analyzer.
The PLGC II calculates the following for up to 8 streams:
Heating value

Compressibility

Specific gravity

Specific heat ratios

Wobbe index

Component concentrations

Features:
24 volt DC operation

No instrument air required

Division II electrical classification

Low helium consumption

standard (Div I optional)

Thermistor TCD detector

The excitation board provides power for

the thermal conductivity detector.

The individual components are separated in

the column by process of adsorption and
diffusion. Up to two columns are supported.

The micro volume diaphram valve is

actuated by carrier gas to perform the
sample injection.

Customer connections for helium carrier

gas, calibration gas and sample gas.
Solenoids electromechanically switch the
flow of gas to inject sample gas into the
system.
The computations, setup and
communications for the PLGC II are
performed by the Motherboard.

The LCD display is capable of displaying

all information about the sample or status
of the PLGC II.

Optional AC power adapter

Optional extended box to allow such

options as: AC power and multiple
streams.

The detector is a temperature type TCD selected for high sensitivity at ambient
temperatures and short response time. It consists of a heated filament contained in a
stainless steel block. Gas flowing through the block loses heat to the block depending
on the concentration and the thermal conductivity of the gas.
The detector is in a temperature controlled enclosure to minimize the effect of ambient
temperature changes. To further reduce temperature and flow effects, a reference
filament is used in a wheatstone bridge configuration.

SAMPLE INJECTION VALVE

The chromatograph is composed of
a 10-port micro volume diaphragm
valve and generally 2 columns
(some applications may only require
one). The DV22 performs the
injection and the backflush. It is
specifically designed for heavy-duty
applications and is rated at
1,000,000
injections
before
requiring service. In two column
systems, column 1 passes all
components except C6+, trapping
C6+ for a quick backflush out.
Column 2 separates the remaining
components. Total analysis time is
approximately 15 minutes and is run
iso-thermally at 40C (optional 5
min cycle time is also available). The
temperature of the chromatography
enclosure is controlled to minimize
retention time shifts due to ambient
temperature changes.

PLGC II SOFTWARE

col 2

Valve Off

The PLGC II software has been designed to receive, interpret, and plot data from the
PLGC II gas chromatograph. Peaks in the resulting chromatogram identify the
compounds by retention time and the concentration by the area of the peak. Various
parameters, including heating value, specific gravity, and compressibility factor, can be
displayed with the software. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the software is a
user friendly Windows based system.
Computer Requirements:

Operating System:

DIMAC Gas Chromatogram

An IBM compatible PC with Windows 98,

NT or ME operating system will be required.

Memory:
The PC must have a minimum of 64 MB
of RAM.

Disk Drives:
The PLGC II configuration program is
provided on CD Rom, and requires at least
20MB on the disk drive. Extra space will be
required to save data.

Serial Port:
To run the PLGC II configuration program a
supplied serial cable is required to connect
the personal computer to the PLGC II. Most
computers will have multiple COM ports to
select from. The COM port selected cannot
be shared with any other device.
