AP Biology 2016-17

Dear Mr. Reutter/ Mr. Hodge,

My name is David Marsh and I will be a senior this year at Avon Lake High
School. I live with my parents and two brothers (Dylan and Nick). I play both football
and basketball for the high school athletic teams and also enjoy to golf in my free time. In
addition to these hobbies, I am a member of the Model United Nations at our school.
Science has always been my favorite subject, especially biology and chemistry courses.
Last year I had Mrs. Burgess for AP Physics 1 and 2. While I did not especially
enjoy physics, I feel as though I walked out of the class with lots of knowledge I did not
previously have. Freshman year I took Honors Biology and had Mr. Hodge as my teacher.
I enjoyed the curriculum and the challenge of my first honors science course. Sophomore
year I had Mrs. Kozar for Honors Chemistry. This class was also rather interesting to me
and I found it enjoyable. I am very interested in anatomy and other science topics, which
is why I plan to pursue a career in Optometry after high school. Currently, I work for my
neighbor who owns his own business (North Lake Trading Co.) doing inventory,
customer service, and landscaping the property. Next summer, I plan to apply to work for
a painting company to receive more hours and save up more money.
When learning new material, I feel that I tend to take a general interest in most
everything, which allows me to better understand what we are learning. For example, I
generally tend to ask lots of questions and always pay attention in class. I tend to struggle

in a course when I fall behind and dont make enough of an effort to meet with a teacher
to talk about what I have missed. In addition, I need to reach out to teachers more outside
of class when I miss or dont understand something. Last year, I was enrolled in AP
Government, AP Physics 1, and AP Physics 2. I received a 5 on AP Gov., 4 on AP Physics
1, and a 3 on AP Physics 2. This year, I am taking AP Biology and AP Psychology.
I enjoyed most everything about my biology class freshman year. The topics were
generally very interesting especially as the year went on. Dissections were obviously the
highlight of the year, but other topics were also very stimulating to me. In AP Biology, I
most look forward to going further into depth of the topics we already studied freshman
year. Delving further into these will allow even more insight into how life on earth works.
I plan to major in Biology in college so this class means a lot to me. My biggest fear is
that I do not enjoy this class, which may make me change my mind about what to study
at the next level. I hope to reinforce my current plan this year by enjoying and exceling in
AP Biology.
- David Marsh
