DEFINE QUESTIONNAIRE ? WHAT ARE OBJECTIVES ?

EXPLAIN
QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN PROCESS?
A questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions and
other prompts for the purpose of gathering information from respondents. Although
they are often designed for statistical analysis of the responses, this is not always
the case.
Questionnaires objectives:
to collect factual information in order to classify people and their circumstances
to gather straightforward information relating to peoples behaviour
to look at the basic attitudes/opinions of a group of people relating to a particular
issue
to measure the satisfaction of customers with a product or service
to collect baseline information which can then be tracked over time to examine
changes
Questionnaire design
In order to gather useful and relevant information it is essential that careful consideration is
given to the design of your questionnaire. A well-designed questionnaire requires thought and
effort, and needs to be planned and developed in a number of stages:
Initial considerations
Question content, phrasing and response format
Question sequence and layout
Pre-test (pilot) and revision
Final questionnaire

State the information required- This will depend upon the nature of the problem,
the purpose of the study and hypothesis framed. The target audience must be
concentrated on.

Decide the matter/content of individual questions- There are two deciding

factors for thisa. Is the question significant? - Observe contribution of each question. Does
the question contribute for the objective of the study?
b. Is there a need for several questions or a single question? - Several questions
are asked in the following cases:
When there is a need for cross-checking
When the answers are ambiguous
When people are hesitant to give correct information.

Recognize the form and layout of the questionnaire- This is very essential for
self-administered questionnaire. The questions should be numbered and pre-coded.
The layout should be such that it appears to be neat and orderly, and not clattered.
Pre-test the questionnaire- The questionnaire should be pre-tested on a small
number of respondents to identify the likely problems and to eliminate them. Each
and every dimension of the questionnaire should be pre-tested. The sample
respondents should be similar to the target respondents of the survey.
Finalize the questionnaire- Check the final draft questionnaire. Ask yourself how
much will the information obtained from each question contribute to the study.
Make sure that irrelevant questions are not asked. Obtain feedback of the
respondents on the questionnaire.
