1 Give the five basic principles of BIG.

BIG Principles
Promotes biodiversity
Promotes conservation of plant genetic sources
Promotes closed nutrient recycling
Promotes water conservation
Promotes ecological pest management
2 In basket composting, the plants should be spaced _____ cm away from the basket to avoid
burning.
B 15-20
3 In a double dug bed, how deep should the soil be dug?
A 60 cm
4 n this asexual propagation method, a missing organ is allowed to regenerate on a detached
vegetative part so that a complete plant is formed.
B Cutting
5 Air layerage is commonly known as
Marcotting
6 How many month(s) after inarching should the scion be cut from the mother plant?
C 3 months
7 This used to refer to the inability of the scion and the stock to form and maintain a union that will
result in desired plant growth
incompatible
8 Aside from basket composting, what are other sources of nutrients for BIG? Give 3.
Trench composting, Traditional composting, Liquid bio-fertilizer
9 Three organs of pineapple used in propagation
Sucker, crown, slip
10 It is a piece of stem inserted between the scion and the stock to minimize graft incompatibility or
to take advantage of its growth controlling properties.
Interstock

3. What will happen to the plants vascular bundles if a dull knife is used in graftage
and cuttage?
If a dull knife is used in grafting or cottage, the vascular bundle of the plant is likely
to be destroyed because the person grafting continues to scrape off the scion until
it is damaged and the grafted plant wont germinate. The dull knife will cause a lot
of tissue damage, and the graft or cut will not heal properly.

4. What are some of the desirable characteristics that should be considered in the
selection of rootstock?
Resistant to present and potential soil pests.
Suitable for the soils texture, depth, and fertility.
Compatible with soil chemistry.
Favored for the soil and water availability, drainage, and irrigation practice.
Appropriate for the fruiting varietys grown and fruiting characteristics.
Properly grown and healthy.
Well-developed root system.

5. Give physical or visual descriptions of the cambium layer. Discuss why it is

scraped off in marcotting. However, in graftage, effort is taken that the cambium
layer of the stock and the scion matches?
The cambium layer is a thin formative layer of delicate meristematic tissue between
the xylem and phloem present in most vascular plants and it is responsible for
secondary growth.
In marcotting, the cambium layer is scraped off in order to expose the pericycle, the
site of lateral root formation. Since the outer layer is the phloem, it is the only
scraped part. When it is scraped, the supply of food from the root is cut thus the
branch which has limited supply of food coming through the xylem develops its own
root system in order to make up for the deficiency. The survival depends on the
health of the parent plant. The condition of the root development varies with the
vigor of the branch chosen. If the branch chosen is infected, its rooting will be weak.
In grafting, the cambium layer of the stock and the scion should match so that they
will regenerate as one in union

The cambium is a thin formative layer between the xylem and phloem of most
vascular plants that give rise to new cells and responsible for secondary growth.
Because in marcotting, the wound is prevented from healing and from the
reconnecting of the upper and lower barks. Additionally, the cambium layer is
scraped off in order to expose the pericycle which is the site of lateral root
formation. While in grafting, the stock and scion should match so that they will
regenerate as one.
