Accounting
Accountingisconcernedwiththeprovision,interpretation,andapplicationoffinancialandothereconomic
informationessentialtotheefficientconductandevaluationofanorganization'sactivities.Itincludesa
studyofdataprocessingandreportingmethods,andofthemanyrelatedmeasurementandconceptual
problemssuchashowtoassessandreporttheeffectsofinflationontheorganization'searningsand
financialstatus.Theinformationprovidedbyaccountingisemployedfor:effectiveplanning,control,and
decisionmakingbymanagementanddischargingtheaccountabilityoforganizationstoinvestors,creditors,
governmentagencies,taxingauthorities,employees,consumers,andotherusers.
Becausedecisionsmadebyvarioususersarepartlybasedonaccountinginformation,accountinghasto
adapttochangingbusinessandsocialneeds.Inorderthattheprofessionalaccountantbeabletomeet
and/orinitiatechange,hisorhereducationmustthereforeextendbeyondamasteryoftechniquesand
practicestoincludeastudyoftheirconceptualfoundations,rationale,andlimitationsandmustincludean
examinationofalternativeaccountingmodels.
ThemajorinAccountinggivesstudentssignificantinsightintoallfinancialinformationaspects:howitis
generated,howitisprocessed,andwhatitmeans.Anybusinesspersonmusthaveanunderstandingofthe
"numbers"ifheorsheistobesuccessfulinfuturebusinessendeavors.Therefore,werecommendtoevery
studentwhohasastronginterestinthefieldsofaccounting,financialmanagement,orfinancialand
managementinformationsystemsthatheorsheconsideraccountingasamajor.Accountingcourseswill
alsoprovideaninsightfulbackgroundforthestudyoffinance,economics,computerscience,operations

management,managementinformationsystems,lawandrelateddisciplines,strategy,ororganizational
design.
AccountingmajorsprimarilyfollowaprofessionalcareerbybecomingaCharteredAccountant(CA),
CertifiedManagementAccountant(CMA)orCertifiedGeneralAccountant(CGA).InAlberta,thethree
AccountingInstitutesareworkingtowardsunificationunderthenewCharteredProfessionalAccounting
(CPA)designation.Someaccountingmajorsgoontolawschool(especiallyifinterestedintax)orindustry.
GraduatesoftheUofABComprogramwithamajorinAccounting,whohaveanoverallGPAof3.0or
higherandhavecompletedalltheCMAprerequisitecourses,areeligibleforanexemptionfromwritingthe
CMAEntranceExamination,andthuscandirectlyentertheCMAStrategicLeadershipProgram.
