Rev. James Steiner
Scripture: Hebrews 12

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the
sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us (Hebrews 12:1).
Dear Friends in Christ,
Things are certainly hopping at Hill Church, and I am excited at what lies ahead. The expanded Wednesdays on the Hill
has resumed. My sincere thanks to Nancy Daugherty and all the others who make it go. And we must all praise God for
the thirty-five children and young persons whose lives have been touched. The Tuesday morning Bible Study has
resumed, and our choir is now adding to worship (please join us!). Many other programs and events are taking place as
well please consider joining whatever you can.
Now, at long last, my real work is (finally?) about to begin. The Session has chosen the members of the Transition
Team, who will lead you through the Interim Process. The Team members are Marsh Miller, Diane Olenic, Barb
Graham, Chad Provident, Maryanne Puente, Barb Kamerer, and Lauren McElhaney. We hope to meet every 2-3 weeks
as we prepare a Self-Study which will describe Hill, her ministries, the community, opportunities and challenges,
strengths and weaknesses, and (most important), characteristics desired in the next pastor.
The Team will not working in isolation they will be engaged with you along the way. Please feel free to offer any
comments or opinions you might have about Hills future, or her past! The congregation will have opportunities to
provide input we are planning a brief survey after worship, as well as a Table Talk event. And, a 25-year Timeline
will be posted in Fellowship Hall for your review and remarks.
We hope to have the Study finished by January, and elect the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) soon after that. The
PNC will prepare the online document, the Ministry Information Form, and begin receiving resumes. Continue to pray
for Gods guidance as this important journey begins.
One more thing take a moment to read the article from the Hill Stewardship Elders about Consecration Sunday,
November 13. Your leaders are asking you to pray, What percentage of my income is God calling me to give to Hill in
2017? Giving to the church is not a referendum on the budget, nor is it about stepping up, or keeping the light on.
What you decide to give is about your response to God on the cross. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died to you can
receive the gift of eternal life how does your entire life (including your finances) respond to that gift? Again, please
read the article and pray about what you read.
There are lots of exciting things happening around us let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Jim

Administration Committee Notes

The committee met on September 8, 2016.
Ongoing maintenance issues addressed Repair made in womens restroom
Candelabra inspected and cleaned
Inside door closer on Second Street entrance to be replaced.
Special thanks to Alan Milanovich for undertaking these tasks.
Plaster repair and painting has been done to the balcony family room. The committee is considering new carpet for the room and a member has volunteered to install the carpeting once purchased.
The Garden Club met on September 15 to do a final weeding and landscape cleanup. Thanks to all the faithful
volunteers who have made our church grounds well-kept and welcoming.

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT

Thanks to you, our Task Force loose change offering on September 11, 2016 was a success. We received
$920 in loose coins (that weighed 100 pounds) as well as $117 in bills and several checks. Our youth bucket
brigade were helpful as our collection agents. These funds as well as what has already been contributed will be
sent to the Bubiashie committee in a few weeks. There is still time to contribute (but no more coins at this time).
Some retail stores have collections where they ask if you want to round off your purchase. A better option
is to take those extra cents and put in a jar for the scholarship fund rather than donate at the retail store. Why?
Our scholarship fund is 100 percent contributed to the girls with no overhead or administration expense. Check
out the charity where you are giving even a few cents. You would be astounded to see their administration
costs.
Again, thank you on behalf of the Bubiashie young Christian women for your generosity.
PRAYER CONCERNS CONTINUE
Please continue to keep the Bubiashie Church, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of the Bubiashie Scholarship
Committee, as well as the students, and Joshua Heikkila, the West Africa Liaison for the PC(USA), in your
prayers. Also for Dr. McWilson Koku Atakro, the Executive Presbyter for the West Ho Presbytery.

Consecration Sunday is Coming, November 13

Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give
to their church merely as a way to pay the bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to
help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their churchs mission and ministry with a
percentage of their incomes.
This year, the Hill Session is introducing the Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical
and spiritual principles of generous giving.
Consecration Sunday is based upon the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual
development, rather than on the need for the church to receive. Instead of treating people as members of a social club
or non-profit organization who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give
unselfishly as an act of discipleship.
Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question,
What percentage of my income is God calling me to give? During worship on Consecration Sunday, November 13,
we will ask you, the Hill family, to make your financial commitments to our missionary, benevolent, and educational
ministries in Butler and around the world.
Every member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending worship on Consecration
Sunday, November 13. Even if you are opposed to completing a card, please join us in worship regardless. The
process will be done in such a way that no one will feel embarrassed if he or she chooses not to fill out a card.
We will do no home visits to ask people to complete cards. During worship, Pastor Jims message will focus on
stewardship as a response to the grace of Christ. At the end of the service, there will be a brief period of introduction
and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.
In a few weeks, you will receive a letter with more information, along with an Estimate of Giving Card. Please sign
up for the lunch following worship on Consecration Sunday, November 13, so we have enough! You will be receiving
a call from the Consecration Sunday team reminding you to attend worship and the lunch. Since there will be no
home visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone
to attend Consecration Sunday, November 13.
Thanks in advance for your prayerful consideration of this letter, and for your participation in worship, Consecration
Sunday, November 13.
In Christ,
Session Stewardship Elders
Jack Barkley, Pat Brennen, Tim Moses

Mary Beth McQuistion

Mary Beth was born on September 14th here in

Butler. Although she has no grandchildren, her niece and
nephew are very special to her. Brett Freund is a potter
living in Minnesota and her niece is a teacher living in
Bolder, Colorado.
Mary Beth was a new member when she first became
a deacon and this allowed her to meet and make many of
the friends she has now. She has also enjoyed meeting our
members at home and doing activities for our Church.
Mary Beths future hope and prayers for our Church
is to continue to grow spiritually, in attendance, and in our
missions.
Mary Beths advice for future deacons is to have an
open heart, listen to people, and to be there for everyone in
need.

Louise (Meyers) Evans

Louise is the chair of our Administration Committee

and also our Clerk of Session. Louise was born on
November 10th in Pittsburgh and married Bill on March 1,
1975. Together Louise and Bill have two children, Emili
and Molly.
Louises favorite memories of Hill Church are all the
Vacation Bible Schools and the fun activities with the
children.
The Hill Church ministry that has touched Louises
heart the most has been serving as a Sunday School teacher.

Louises favorite thing about being an elder has been

developing closer relationships with her Church family.
