“Michigan’s growing chestnut industry is at risk. We
rank number one in the country for number of chestnut
farms; 54 farms encompassing 813 acres. Not to mention,
chestnuts are among the many different specialty crops
grown in Michigan,” said Koivisto. “We want to prevent
the introduction of chestnut gall wasp into our state to en-

across Michigan.”
MDA’s exterior state quarantine places restrictions
on the movement of chestnut nursery stock from the fol-

Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee,
and Virginia.
The chestnut gall wasp is a tiny insect that can cause
chestnut trees to produce less nuts and often causes the
tree to die. These wasps damage both the Asiatic and Eu-
ropean chestnut which are grown commercially for food
and the remaining American chestnut, which were largely
destroyed due to chestnut blight. The gall wasp does not
affect horse chestnut, which is not a true chestnut.

CROTON HARDY

Please enjoy our monthly excerpts from the compilations of Elon Howe who has walked this story. He would like to thank
Cameron Knutson, his walking partner, the Newaygo County Society of History, Norm Ochs, County Surveyor & Leon
Staples, computer expert, & Londa Howe for typing everything up.

JOHN SNOW’S “TOWN”

Today one will find only memories of Snowtown. What might be left of this sight may be found south of
Hardy Dam, one and a half miles down Cypress to 48th then to 52nd to 56th Streets then east and west.
The early people that put the boom town there were first: John Stearns from Croton on the Hudson, New
York; second: Christopher Culp and then John F. Snow – in this order.
Stearns came to the Croton area, then called the Fork, around 1836. Culp arrived sometime in 1854;
John Snow around 1857. Stearns’s earlier work may be found on the very first county survey of Croton
Township.

Evolution
Many times when we hear that word we put our guard up because we think of Charles Darwin with his

theories. But evolution simply means change. And that is something we all must do.
When we are born, we are basically animals and our whole purpose is to survive, both personally and as
a species. We have animalistic survival instincts that are programmed into our DNA. So we compete and fight
to insure that we get what we need. Every Friday thru the End of October
As we grow up, at some point, we begin to emerge into a more humanistic state, as we begin to use the
morals and values that we learned from parents, teachers, churches and society in general. Most of us get Greenville Auction and
to a place where we know that we and the species will survive. At that point we can begin to focus on the
human characteristics of love, compassion, co-operation, and the good of all concerned. Flea Market
The next phase of change is an awareness of the spiritual part of us. Somewhere between childhood and

death, most people become aware of a divine, higher power that is within us. We reach that point in many
ways. For some, it is part of our religious training as children. For others, it may be a near death experience. Venders & Auction Consignees wanted
Maybe, it is the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Perhaps, the diagnosis of a terminal illness brings
us to spiritual awareness. Call for information
In the animal and human states we are often not aware of this divine part of us and Joe 616-755-4209 • Carl 616-984-5280

in our spiritual awareness, we realize that the divine power is within us. It is this vital
force that actually powers up the system. Sure, the organs and tissues all play their
role, but without this divine spark we could not exist.
In holistic medicine, we pay attention to this spiritual part because it has such

a huge impact on the physical and mental. In homeopathy, we believe that this
spiritual, vital energy is what produces the symptoms that guide us to the correct
remedy to bring the complete being (body, mind, and spirit) back into alignment.
So, realize, we are evolving beings, from animal to human to spirit and our physical,
mental, and spiritual health are inseparable.
