Newaygo Area Chamber
of Commerce announces
expansion of operations
The Newaygo Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased
to announce the expansion of the Chamber staff to bet-
ter serve its Membership and the community. Over the
past 18 months, at the request of the Board of Directors,
Terrie Ortwein served as the Chamber’s Executive Direc-
tor. During that time, she is widely credited for improving
the Chamber’s operations and fiscal status, growing the
membership, and rebuilding the brand and image of the
Chamber. “I’m pleased to report that we have made excel-
lent progress in all of those areas” stated Scott Faulkner,
Chairman of the Chamber. “Terrie’s tireless efforts over
almost two years could not have been more significant
or fruitful. She single-handedly put this Chamber back
on the map and headed toward a brighter future for our
Members and our community.
The growth of the Chamber has resulted in an impor-
tant staff expansion, to include the addition of Newaygo
native Don Henning, whose grandfather’s name is memo-
rialized in Henning Park, as the new Executive Director,
moving Terrie Ortwein to the newly created position of
Deputy Director. An enthusiastic businesswoman in her
own right, Ortwein was quick to add, “These have been re-
warding times for me personally and for the community,
and I look forward to continuing these efforts. However,

2010 Coral Days Festival
Pageants Contestants
This is the 7th year of pageants and is becoming
a tradition of a grand, entertaining production! The
pageants are being choreographed by the Muse Dance
Academy with Millianne Lewis emceeing. We will be
providing the winners of the Miss & Junior Miss Coral
Days each with U.S. Savings Bonds. The winners of
the Prince and Princess Pageant will each receive new
bicycles. Theresa Petersen is our photographer and
several others’ donations are making these events a
reality.
We are excited to be introducing our 2010 grand
marshals during this evening. The pageants kick off
the Coral Days Festival weekend and will be packed

farms; 54 farms encompassing 813 acres. Not to mention,
chestnuts are among the many different specialty crops
grown in Michigan,” said Koivisto. “We want to prevent
the introduction of chestnut gall wasp into our state to en-
sure the continued health and viability of chestnut groves
across Michigan.”
MDA’s exterior state quarantine places restrictions
on the movement of chestnut nursery stock from the fol-
lowing quarantined states - Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky
Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee,
and Virginia.
The chestnut gall wasp is a tiny insect that can cause
chestnut trees to produce less nuts and often causes the
tree to die. These wasps damage both the Asiatic and Eu-
ropean chestnut which are grown commercially for food
and the remaining American chestnut, which were largely
destroyed due to chestnut blight. The gall wasp does not
affect horse chestnut, which is not a true chestnut.

This summer, not too far away from
where you live there are a group of vol-
unteers making things happen for chil-
dren and youth. They are putting up an
amazing variety of Vacation Bible School
activities(VBS) where kids have the oppor-
tunity to learn more about God and receive
life giving principles from the Bible. The
youth activities offered for Middle and High
school youth include sports, music, Bible
group discussions and just plain hanging
out with other youth. This might be the best
summer adventure for some of your kids,
low cost and right in our back yard.

“Don’t tell us the sky’s the limit when there
are footprints on the moon,” is the Class of
2010’s motto. The commencement exercises
were held at the high school on May 27. The
weather was beautiful, but hot and humid
leaving the gymnasium uncomfortable for
the attendees.
The 163 graduates marched from the stage
to their seats to the Pomp and Circumstance
processional. Principal Mark Simons
welcomed the crowd, and Superintendent
James Scholten gave the opening remarks.
The senior band members played one last
song with the underclassmen.
Alaina Swaney delivered the salutatory
address. She thanked her Heavenly Father,
her parents, and her classmates for the

a pad of paper and a pen. She told the students to write today’s date

page of the notepad and
record what their best
day will be five years

page 10, 25, and on the

Tri County Senior, Molly Davis was
a finalist in the Courageous Persuaders
Public Service Announcement scholarship
competition. She placed in the top 60 of
743 entries and was invited to attend
the awards ceremony at the Marriot in
Troy, Michigan. She and teacher, Kristine
Dollberg attended the awards ceremony
on Tuesday, May 18.
Courageous Persuaders is a Detroit
Auto Dealers Association-sponsored event and honors students for
dedication to prevention of underage drinking. The scholarship
competition encouraged high school students to create a 30 second
public service announcement on the dangers of underage drinking.
“We are thrilled at this year’s entry turnout, which drew a total of
743 entries from 45 states. It is extremely encouraging to see these
young people take a stand and speak out on the serious dangers of
underage drinking, and we are proud to celebrate their achievement,”
said Perkins host of the 2010 awards ceremony.
Molly worked independently on the project as part of her Advanced
Media class. This is Molly’s second year in Media Productions and she
was also awarded the Tri County Media Productions, “Excellence in
Media Productions” Award by teacher, Kristine Dollberg. Molly will
attend Full Sail University in Florida in the fall.

for years to come. With the help of several
businesses from the community and the hard

are GM Wood Products of Newaygo, Michigan Chair of Howard City,

The proof of the students’ success is shown through several great
projects that place in the top ten of the MITES State Competition
recently in Sault Ste. Marie. Joey Carey took home a first place and
a ninth place. Mitch Phillips received a sixth place and Honorable
Mention on his projects. Tyler Newland received fifth place. Cody
Steinbach received a fifth place. Cody Rambo received eighth place.
Adam Phillips earned Honorable Mention. We look forward to many
more great projects like these to come. A big thank you goes out to all
the people and businesses that have given their support.

Most of us know that regular mainte-
nance is key to a well-running vehicle.
That’s why we get our oil changed,
have our tires rotated and so forth.
Another important part of the regular
maintenance schedule is the tune-up.
Because the internal workings of ve-
hicles have changed so much over the
years, the definition of a tune-up may
vary from the simple replacement of
spark plugs to the complete overhaul
of several areas within the vehicle.
Most experts agree that the best tune-
ups involve an inspection of several
areas, including the battery, engine
mechanical, powertrain control, fuel,
ignition and emissions. Not every shop
defines a tune-up in this way, however.
Generally, the more involved the tune-
up, the more it costs.
When scheduling a tune-up, it is im-
portant that you find out what it will
entail and how much it will cost. Be
wary of really low estimates; chances
are the shop is pushing for your busi-
ness and the final bill for the tune-up
will be much higher.

How Old Is That New Tire?

When you shop for bananas, you buy the bruised,
rotting ones, right? Of course, you don’t. You go
for the fresh ones unless you’re making banana
bread. When you shop for tires, you just might
be buying ones that are the equivalent of bruised,
rotting bananas. Unfortunately, unlike bananas,
the tires may be bruised and rotting where you
can’t see such damage. That’s because these
seemingly new tires aren’t new at all. Here’s how
you can tell how old that “new” tire really is.
Imprinted on all tires are a series of digits and
letters called a Tire Identification Number (or the
tire’s serial number). It’s these symbols that tell
you where the tire was made, how big it is and
when it was made-specifically identifying the
week and the year of the tire’s manufacturing.
Depending upon whether the tire was manufac-
tured since the year 2000 or before, there are two
sets of digits and letters. For those manufactured
in 2000 or later, the first three symbols will be
the letters “DOT” in all instances. The remain-
ing symbols will be a combination of letters and
numbers. The entire series will look similar to
this: DOT K6RY TBFM 4408. It’s the last four
numbers that you want to focus on. The week and
the year of the tire’s manufacture can be found in
these four numbers. The first two digits indicate
the week of assembly and the last two identify
the year. If you see “4408” as the last four digits,

Are you a traveler with a penchant for the unusual? Do
you like to take trips to unusual destinations from time
to time? If so, then you might want to consider visiting
some of these big and bold roadside attractions.
World’s Largest Ball of String in Darwin, MN
Constructed by farmer Francis Johnson from 1950 to
1979, the nine-ton ball of string measures 40 feet in
circumference and 11 feet in height. It is housed inside
a gazebo in a local park. Competing balls of string are
located in Cawker City, KS, and Branson, MO.
World’s Largest Baseball Bat
in Louisville, KY
Leaning against the Louisville Slugger Museum, the
120-foot-tall, 34-ton baseball bat is a replica of the bat
Babe Ruth swung in the 1920s. It is constructed of hollow
carbon steel and was erected in 1995. In addition to the
bat, other token items line the street, including a giant
three-dimensional baseball that appears to be smashing
through a window and a leathery flying bat.
World’s Largest Catsup Bottle
in Collinsville, IL
Built in 1949 by the W.E. Caldwell Company for the G.S.
Suppiger catsup bottling plant, the catsup bottle is a 170-
foot water tower. It was restored in 1995 and was named
to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
World’s Largest Cowboy Boots in
San Antonio, TX
Standing outside of the North Star Mall, the 35x40-foot
pair of boots attracts big business. Strung with Christmas
lights, it is a highlight of the holidays.
World’s Largest Concrete Totem Pole
in Foyil, OK
Designed by Ed Galloway, the totem pole took 11 years
to complete and measures 30 feet in circumference and
60 feet in height. It is constructed of concrete over a
scrap metal and sandstone rock skeleton, and is painted
with spirit lizards, owls and Indian chiefs. The pole sits
in a park with other creations by Galloway.
World’s Largest Egg in Winlock, WA
Perched atop a 10-foot steel pole in a grassy median,
the 12-foot-long egg weighs 1,200 pounds. Throughout
the years, it has been restored numerous times and
reconstructed of more durable materials. A competing
egg is located in Mentone, IN.
World’s Largest Flag in Long Beach, CA
Owned by Ski Demski, the “Superflag,” as it is called,
measures 505x225 feet and weighs 3,000 pounds. It
requires the strength of almost 500 people to unfurl it. A
smaller version of the flag, Superflag Jr., is available. It
measures 47x82 feet and was carried by 55 ROTC cadets
at the Bush inaugural.
World’s Largest Kaleidoscope
in Mount Tremper, NY
The main attraction of Emerson Place, the more
than 60-foot-tall kaleidoscope features three 38-foot
mirrors. Each year, three shows are presented inside the
kaleidoscope according to the season.

Built by Will Herron at a whopping $700,000, the

JOHN SNOW’S “TOWN”

Today one will find only memories of Snowtown. What might be left of this sight may be found south of
Hardy Dam, one and a half miles down Cypress to 48th then to 52nd to 56th Streets then east and west.
The early people that put the boom town there were first: John Stearns from Croton on the Hudson, New
York; second: Christopher Culp and then John F. Snow – in this order.
Stearns came to the Croton area, then called the Fork, around 1836. Culp arrived sometime in 1854;
John Snow around 1857. Stearns’s earlier work may be found on the very first county survey of Croton
Township.
